Must Watch: Sam Mendes' Away We Go Trailer
Focus Features has debuted the trailer for Sam Mendes' Away We Go starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. This is quirky romantic comedy follows a couple about to have a baby who travel around the US to find a perfect place to start their family. And as you can tell within the first few seconds, they're really going for the Juno vibe on this, with the hand-drawn title cards and quirky feel and everything. I'm not really sold though. It just doesn't look that great, like another Juno but without the originality anymore. Though I'll admit I was enjoying it until Allison Janney showed up. She really killed it for me, especially at the end.

Away We Go is directed by Oscar winning filmmaker Sam Mendes, of American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead, and Revolutionary Road most recently. The screenplay was co-written by author and Salon.com editor Dave Eggers as well as newcomer Vendela Vida. In addition to John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, this also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine O'Hara, Jeff Daniels, Chris Messina, Paul Schneider, and Cheryl Hines. Focus Features will premiere Away We Go in limited theaters starting on June 5th this summer.
I think Jim Gaffigan makes up for all the Allison Janney in the world. I'll see it.

Why'd Allison Janney kill it for you? I think she's a superb actress, and has impeccable comedic timing that she displayed well during The West Wing. Not hating, just wondering why you thought she stood out as being bad?

Anyone know the name or that song?
Jon B on Mar 16, 2009
yeah I dont see what was wrong with her at all, otherwise looks pretty shitty still.
Richard on Mar 16, 2009
This looks nothing like Juno except for the handdrawn title cards and the pregnancy. In fact, it reminded me more of Wes Anderson without his visual style, at least writing wise. This didn't come off as obnoxious at all. I'm actually looking forward to it.

it was some alexi murdoch song thats for sure

Didn't seem that funny to me, felt more like a drama and I don't know if that's good in this case.

There is quirk. Thats undeniable. However it looks completely different from Juno. How about looking at the fact that its a Sam Mendes' directed comedy. Or the debut of the amazing writers Dave Eggers and his wife Vendela Vida. I am very much looking forward to seeing this.
Mitch on Mar 16, 2009
Great writer and great cast with a director that's shown he's capable. I can't see this being bad at all. Also, it seems nothing like Juno. Your description reminds me of these marketing execs at these studios trying to lop Children of Men into every description of Sci-Fi and Juno and Little Miss Sunshine to whatever new indie comedy coming out.
huh on Mar 16, 2009
trailer looked too much like a juno/garden state type movie. Jim Gaffigan will be its saving grace for me
PJ H on Mar 16, 2009
The funny thing is Egger's books/writing style is clearly present and is something that was developed much before Garden State and Juno. I am a fan of both those movies but I think this is something that should be considered.
Mitch on Mar 16, 2009
Maggie Gyllyenhaal looks hilarious in this, the stroller scene looks great.

Totally felt like Juno. chuck

You guys. It's Sam fucking Mendes and Dave fucking Eggers - I can almost guarantee this will be better then 75% of the crap that comes out this year. How are people not more excited for this?
Matt on Mar 16, 2009
Looks fantastic. Almost nothing wrong with the trailer at all.
Itri on Mar 16, 2009
I'm excited for this, having kids makes your mind go fucking mad. In a good way. It looks quite human and funny.

looks good man

Sam Mendez is a pretty solid director, especially when it comes to telling a simple story with multiple sides. I'll admit I wasn't a huge fan of Revolutionary Road, and Jarhead wasn't spectacular....but considering the bland subject matter of both films I'd say he did a pretty good job of keeping both entertaining. He may be best suited for films with a bit of sarcastic edgy humor. I think this will be great. Probably pretty slow, but ultimately very heartwarming and human.
ImaginaryVisionary on Mar 16, 2009
not really interested... although I do love Jim Gaffigan

I'll see it for Krasinski. That's all.

doesnt look terrible, janneys a bit annoying but krasinski and rudolph look like they do a good job carrying the movie
harrison on Mar 16, 2009
This looks pretty awesome. Focus usually finances some awesome movies, so I'll support them no matter what.
Adam on Mar 16, 2009
I'm into it. Gives me that garden state/elizabethtown kind of feeling to it.
Nick Sears on Mar 16, 2009
Krasinski + beard = awesome. and this doesn't look like juno to me ether. I mean, just because it has an acoustic song and hand drawn titles? That's kind of broad. Might as well say every trailer that has voice overs and a killer looks like friday the 13th. been looking forward to this. Wish maggie was the lead though.
Crumb on Mar 16, 2009
looks really great. perhaps feels sort of similar to Juno, but didn't steal the storyline at all and will be plenty original.
scm1000 on Mar 16, 2009
Beard Jim is a sold ticket.
Frank on Mar 16, 2009
At the beginning I kind of got a Zack and Miri feel.... a little bit o Juno too. I'll probably see it. I like John Krasinski, he's an entertaining guy.
Jesse Gouldsbury on Mar 16, 2009
Stop with the Juno the most overrated movie ever...that said I loved Juno, but Sam Mendes will blow Juno out of the water with this film especially with Eggars working on the screenplay , so in simple words I'M SOLD!!!!!!!!!
xerxerxex on Mar 16, 2009
I probably will get in trouble as I am in the "business"but I saw the entire film and it is GREAT!!! it has the feel of FLIRTING WITH DISASTER but it is 10 times better, no 100 times better. It is a film that is both funny and melancholy at the same time, a very difficult tone to make believable but Mendes direction is perfect. For all of you commenting about JUNO you can't be more wrong. The heart of the movie is an amazing chemistry between Maya and John but all the supporting roles (ESPECIALLY Allison Janney) are priceless. This will be a "word of mouth" film that will be a "sleeper" that will become a huge hit.
David on Mar 16, 2009
I have to agree with everyone who is sick of the "Juno-esque" discription for every freakin new indie that comes out. the only thing this has in common with Juno is a pregnant chick and hand drawn title sequence. who cares . The cast looks awesome Mendes is always great, I can't wait for this.,
theotherbluth on Mar 16, 2009
TOTALLY agree with #6. More Wes Anderson-like than anything else. This fact is not debatable, and if you try, I will come to your house and pee on your Coco Puffs.

Juno was original? Really?
Ganaesh D. on Mar 17, 2009
i've always thought of maya rudolph as being extremely talented, even though most of her material hasn't really played to her strengths. hopefully this is just the beginning for her. also, anything with ms. gyllenhaal automatically wins me over, at least as far as deciding to go see it, so i was sold as soon as she showed up. the rest of the cast definitely add to the interest, and the fact that sam mendes is directing, and that mr. eggers is one of the writers, just locks it in, as far as i'm concerned. hopefully this is still playing somewhere mid-july, and i can make a double feature with 500 days of summer. sounds like a good day to me.
Zach on Mar 17, 2009
I can't see this being anything like juno! man i am so sick of comments like that. i agree that this has a wes anderson vibe, and with (bearded) krasinski starring, i don't think you can go wrong at all. definitely seeking this one out when it hits theatres

i dont know how i'll feel seeing jim hit on someone other than pam...

I think every one of these actors got tricked into this movie (director won an oscar, not for this film). I will not .

How to make john krasinski look less krasinski... grow a beard. movie looks great.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I'm not a big fan of Juno anymore...it's like what happened with Napoleon Dynamite...it was a small film that was great with a small audience, but it was (over)killed when it hit big. I liked Juno when I saw it in theatres. Didn't like it afterwards, when it became this huge thing and it's really just annoying. Anyway, as for this film, I see where the Juno vibe comes from. It looks cute, and it's kinda my goal to watch a majority of films that I see trailers for/hear of/come to theatres, so, I'm in. Looks like a cute little quirky feel good film to watch with the "galpals".

The trailers looks fine, you guys (referring to the FirstShowing staff not to the other people posting in thins message board) are so fanboy-ish sometimes. When Juno was nominated for the Oscars, everyone was like "this could be this year's Little Miss Sunshine" and so on. So what, Little Miss Sunshine could've been that years anything as well, we're talking about a style of making movies that a lot of filmmakers use, that doesn't mean each isn't its own thing. You guys go and say that's somehow a propietary thing from the Juno movie (which i don't have anything against and in fact i enjoyed quite a bit), have you seen Mister Foe? That flick with Jamie Bell? It also starts out with some quirky animated credits, they probably got it from Juno right?

I judge a movie by a good story told well. Simple really. Not so simple to pull off. Today's movies are mostly formula driven. So I find myself returning to Ted Turner classics. In my humble opinion, the scripts, stories and actors were more compelling. Movies such as To Kill A Mockingbird or Twelve Angry Men (performed with a stellar cast, staged in a jury room) was captivating. No moving parts, no high action sequences, no special effects. The premise of this movie makes me yawn even though I like the actors.
sasha on Jun 5, 2009
I think that this is definitely a couples movie. I think a lot of couples are in a similar scenario as the one portrayed on the film.

What a great trailer! This definitely seems like my kind of movie. I don't usually like the big blockbuster films, I like the smaller budget less know films.

The trailer was great! Definitely had the same feeling as Juno but that was a great movie too. I'm gonna try to find this movie - hopefully it is out by now or soon going to be playing in a local theater here in Indiana. 🙂
