Must Watch: Trailer for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones
Paramount has debuted the trailer for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones starring Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, and Stanley Tucci. The somewhat controversial story centers on a young girl who has been murdered that watches over her family, and her killer, from heaven. This looks like a very interesting mix of beautiful heavenly imagery and an emotional drama about the loss of a loved one. I still think this looks phenomenal, but I guess that all just threw me off a bit at first. It reminded me of the trippy imagination scenes in Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Anyway, watch it below!

The Lovely Bones is directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, of Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and King Kong previously. The screenplay was co-written by Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who also co-wrote Lord of the Rings and King Kong with Jackson. This is based on Alice Sebold's bestselling novel of the same name first published in 2002. Paramount is bringing The Lovely Bones to theaters everywhere on December 11th.
Looks very good - the imagery is pretty spectacular, and the movie looks heartbreaking, frightening, and beautiful all at the same time. Does anyone kno wif the music that starts at about 1:11 is from the Brian Eno soundtrack though? I hope it (and more like it) is in the film - it takes the imagery to a whole new level.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm that looks so good!

This was such a sad book. It looks like they're trying to make it more of a murder mystery though...and that's not at all what the book was about. Still, might be good if it keeps true to the anguish, heartache, and eventual reconciliation of the family. By the way, Timothy - the music that starts in the middle of the preview is "Alice" by The Cocteau Twins.

aww too much, too much trailer....

I've been waiting for this film for two damn years. It's looks amazing. If any oscar betting occurs in Vegas, then I'd put money on this to be up for everything. Can't wait for this.
Patrick on Aug 4, 2009
Thank gooodddd someone out there is doing something interesting with the imagery of film. Bless Peter jackson
Scott on Aug 4, 2009
I read the script, and while reading some of the descriptions of shots and imagery, I was wondering how Jackson was going to pull this off. Well, it looks like he did and did it beautifully. Not to mention the help he got from longtime DOP Andrew Lesnie. Great work and they'll both be recognized.
Patrick on Aug 4, 2009
It does look amazing and I'm just now starting to get really interested in this flick again. Proves that Peter Jackson is still the master of genre filmaking and can do anything from horror, fantasy and even drama.
wrongturn687 on Aug 4, 2009
The footage looks great, but doesn't the trailer seem like the wrong vibe for the film?
Fuelbot on Aug 4, 2009
# 4 Thanks. It's a beautiful song. Which album should I get? Blue Bell Knoll? Treasure?
Timothy on Aug 4, 2009
Well while i would perfer it to remain as a fanstasy about what happens in death this doesn't seem all too bad so I'll check it out. But wouldn't it suck if P.J. has lost his magic? I hope he hasn't and I hope this will turn out to good, and Stanley Tucci as a the murderer is something I need to see!
Xerxex on Aug 4, 2009
Hey isn't that the girl from Atonement? wait I'll answer that my self...yes, yes it is. never mind.
Xerxex on Aug 4, 2009
This looks like it'll be really good and I can't wait to see it, but this trailer seemed a little off. It seemed like it told too much, and the music in it has definitely been used before and felt wrong and distracting to me. Hope the next trailer is better without giving more away.

Mark Wahlberg. I like him. ^^ looking good!! Peter Jackson always comes out with big hits. #22 is weird. 😛
Scott on Aug 4, 2009
A little toooo much on the trailer, but the imagery is very beautiful. The story has me interested too. I'm not a big fan of Mark Wahlberg, but I'll give it a chance anyway.
Sabes on Aug 4, 2009
Looking pretty good, but damn that trailer gave away toooo much. I know who the murderer is!

OCP on Aug 5, 2009
Gonna be the guy to kill the buzz here, but honestly it does not look that great. Sure special effects and scenery are fine, but other then that looks somewhat like a very generic film. Not really excited, but worth going to see for free.

Don't want to watch the trailer for fear of spoilers of any kind, but I'll just say that I'm glad the pic above is not actually Chloe Sevigny.

That looks absolutely fantastic!!! Another masterpiece from Jackson. The visuals look amazing! Very impressed, I will seeing this one for sure.
K on Aug 5, 2009
I agree with #4. It looks like they've changed a lot unfortunately as the book is incredible. It looks like the movie is well done but maybe not a good representation of the book.
janet on Aug 5, 2009
Looks like a very glossy Heavenly Creatures. No bad thing but I'm still cautious after King Kong. Boy, did that film bore me to tears.
Sleepykid on Aug 5, 2009
Wow...looks really fantastic. The one thing I love about Peter Jackson movies are that you will be left amazed with some of the scenes and thats exactly whats there in this trailer....cant wait for the movie
srprime on Aug 5, 2009
# 37 This one is only supposed to two hours and twenty minutes - a respectable running time, and more than an hour shorter than his last four films.
Timothy on Aug 5, 2009
Looks great but agree with everyone else................To much in the trailer Although They can make us think its the guy with glasses and its not really
SHANEDAV on Aug 5, 2009
Does anyone else want to know why we have to watch it at apple.com and not here? You say watch it below, but if you click on it, it just takes you away to Apple. Is Apple not allowing sites to embed this video?
Dan on Aug 5, 2009
The murderer in the book is revealed on like page 2. So no point in keeping it a secret.

PJ has shed some pounds for sure. Now all Peter needs is a hair cut and he can finally leave Middle Earth.
Gonnarentit on Aug 5, 2009
This isn't my kind of movie, normally... but wow, I really want to see it, it looks amazing.
Richard on Aug 5, 2009
For anyone expecting this to be a murder mystery, don't. The trailer is pretty deceptive, if they follow the book, the rest of the movie is going to veer in a very different direction, the movies is going to about how her death affects her parents, brother, sister, schoolmates, and community deal with Susie's murder. For those looking for mindless action flicks, avoid this movie like a plague. For those who wants to score points with their gfs, watch this and don't forget to bring a box of tissue. If PJ stuck with the good parts of the book, this is going to be an amazing and heartbreaking movie.
Jackie on Aug 6, 2009
How do you sell this movie? Make it seem like it is a muder mystery...I am hoping Peter relies heavily with the emotions of the book. Trailer gave away too much but the imagery the Peter used is very impressive. This just climbed up the list for most anticipated movie of the year.
Dee on Aug 6, 2009
My favorite quote about the trailer was from the snarky website videogum. "The Lovely Bones brings magic and wonder back to child rape-homicide!" Uncomfortably true and funny analysis for sure. And if Robin Williams or Cuba Gooding Jr show up in the afterlife portions of the film, I'm gonna puke.
Drew on Aug 6, 2009
I don't know why everyone is saying it shows too much, it isn't a whodunnit film. I haven't read the book but realized that. I really enjoyed the trailer and can't wait for december.
M on Aug 6, 2009
Doh. So very cheeeezy. It makes the classic misstake of telling the entire plot in the trailer. Beautiful scenery though.
Shige on Aug 6, 2009
# 60 Totally agree. Unfortunately, too many fail at that, and do exactly this. But like you said, looks great
chris on Aug 6, 2009

Reminds me of how gut-wrenching the book was. So much in so few pages. I adore the colorization/fantasy-like scenes from the trailer. Reminded me of how much the little girl adored the world she was in, wherever that was. some possible spoilers... For those that say the book was not a sort of mystery/thriller, you are forgetting. Even though we always know who did it, we're always on the edge of our seats about when they are going to find out. If ever. And they never even have the peace of finding her body. We see it, they don't. Awful stuff. I can't wait to see him die by icicle. Couldn't have happened to a more despicable guy. I love Stanley Tucci, though. Did they really have to give him that awful role? (p.s. How cool is it that Susan Sarandon is willing to play Grandma? She's the best.)
evie on Aug 8, 2009
I have been waiting on this movie since I heard Peter Jackson was making it. Ive read the book and it had me laughing and crying..... took my breath away. I can see from the Trailer that the movie is going to be every bit as gripping as the book was. And in reference to #50 comment about the trailer telling you the story already.... the movie is taken from a book so chances are a hell of a lot of people know the story already anyway... duh!! I suggest you just watch it and stop being a know-it-all
Jo on Aug 11, 2009
Looks verrrrry interesting ;\ Even if its from Peter Jackson..

I find it slightly disturbing that so many people actually believe you can film an entire book "as is". Impossible, unless of course you're willing to watch an 8 hour film. This trailer focuses quite a bit on the "thriller" part of the book. And, as someone who has read the book, there's a great deal that does feel like a thriller in the entire first half of the book. The second half deals more with Susie coming to grips with the fact that her family is living their lives in a way that doesn't include her, but that is consistently affected by her death. I'm sure Peter, being a person who believes strongly in pursuing all themes, has touched on all parts of Alice Sebold's novel. This trailer, as some of you must be reminded, is edited and created by the studio. Most directors do not get involved in the marketing, and even if Jackson did, I'm sure he would not allow the entire story line be revealed in one small trailer preview.
Quanah on Aug 16, 2009
literally just finished the book tonight. I'd purposely stayed away from the trailer incase it gave anything away. Book was brilliant, however this trailer was kind of 'riiiight', didn't do anything for me, at all. I'll still see the movie though, i have faith in Peter Jackson!
ChrisUK on Sep 1, 2009
I read this book at least six times it's one of my favorites. it is sad but susies very strong in life and spirit. I'm very excited its going to be shown to the world what a good author and amazing book
Tara Millard on Sep 12, 2009
#66 You're a dick for giving spoilers. Other than that, this trailer doesn't give anything away at all! It doesn't tell the whole plot in any way. If the movie follows the book then you would have known who the killer was within the first few minutes of the movie anyways. Considering the other 'thriller' parts, this trailer doesn't spoil anything. Just gives you a taste, like any good trailer should. Stop whining if you aren't even going to care to know the story. It's a beautiful one.
