New Look at the District 9 Trailer with Subtitles and No Blur
by Alex Billington

Source: IMDb
I was hesitant about putting this up (because I don't want to ruin the experience), but after a second closer look at this trailer and some early responses via twitter, I knew I needed to run it. Earlier today, IMDb debuted the District 9 trailer, however their version was different from the trailer we posted last week. In the pivotal scene where the alien is being interrogated, the blur was mysteriously gone and the scene featured subtitles. The video has since been pulled from their site, which either means it was a sneaky viral or a screw up, because I'm now hearing different reactions, like "that alien looks incredibly emotive."
Re-watch the first teaser trailer for District 9:
For more info on this trailer, head over to the viral site: MNUSpreadsLies.com.
An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions in Johannesburg, South Africa suddenly find a "kindred spirit" in a government agent that is exposed to their mysterious biotechnology.
District 9 is both written and directed by first-timer Neill Blomkamp, a South African filmmaker who previously directed the awesome Halo: Arms Race shorts. The screenplay was co-written by Blomkamp and writing partner Terri Tatchell. This project is based on Blomkamp's short film Alive in Joburg, which can be seen online here. Sony will be bringing District 9 to theaters everywhere on August 14th this summer.

I was hesitant and thought the subtitles could have been faked, but yeah those eyes seem pretty emotive.

Seriously...this dude would've made Halo into a Bad A%$ film...a potential franchise...why bail?!?!? Doesn't make any sense...this and the Halo shorts are an indication of what could've been...I'm eager to see this film though...

I know some people didn't like the alien in the first version of this trailer, but I have to say that without the blur, when the camera goes in for that close shot it's extremely extremely exciting. It just feels right - emotive is a decent word for it. Perfect.

Why does this alien look any different than a M.I.B alien again? Looks like a good movie, but the alien look as been done quite a few times already imo.

Now I am really interested. When I saw this for the first time at Wolverine I was extremely hesitant, but that makes it seem a lot deeper then just another alien flick.

Wow, that looks good. I am happy that this version came out, as I was a little unhappy with the alien's face being blurred in the original version as well. Now...can we have a HD version of this lol? I'd watch it again. 🙂

Um how do we have their ship, are they all almost dead and we have entered their craft and quarantined all the aliens off it? I guess some pretty smart guys were able to figure out their alien technology huh, BAH im getting to critical, I hope it kicks ass!

@17 yeah I was thinking the same thing , however i do hope they have a proper explanation lol

the basic concept reminds me a lot of Alien Nation, although in that case there were around half a million of the aliens, so they couldn't put them in a ghetto, and let them just roam around california. and be police detectives, having wacky adventures on a weekly basis 😉

This should have been the one released in theaters

I personally liked the version with the blurred face...made it seems like something they would release to the "public" in the movie so not to startle those with weak constitutions...but it was nice to know what he/she was saying. I honestly forgot about this film and now that I remember I cannot wait until it comes out.

is it just me or does this seem alot like alian nation

The only similarity to Alien nation is a big spaceship coming down to earth. Other than that i don't see why people keep referencing the TV show?

Sooo torn on this. I hate that they reveal the aliens in this trailer. Takes away a lot of suspense for me. Everything but the alien itself looks cool. I've already seen MIB. I love the doc feel to this though.

***The first trailer envoked excitement for a quality alien movie. ***The second trailer did the same, although it added a feeling of sympathy and deep emotion towards the alien. This could be amazing.

Damn...This...This might actually be a great idea, a nice twist in the already sucked dry genre. Nice all i can say at this point... and breasts i can always say that ^_^

I love the fact that the alien still looks similar to the ones in Alive in Joburg. Any it's incredibly emotive. Looking forward to seeing this! 🙂

The alien looks better without the blur, looking forward to the movie. @ Dirk Diggler It's not only the spaceship (and the aliens looking for refugee, if that's still the case here), another similarity is the discrimination against the aliens. In 'Alien Nation' of course, they are largely integrated in our society already, not separated, so the discrimination is more subliminal here.

Neill Blomkamp's Alive in Joburg short film can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNReejO7Zu8 It's what district 9 is based on...

#13 - The difference is in the details. There's nothing in MIB that comes close to evoking the sadness this alien does. Though that may just be the music.

i am actually glad he aint doin halo as this seems a great change of direction for once in the sci fi genre!!! i hav a feelin this will easily be in my top 5 films of this year........

This looks cool for the reason that even though they "invade" Earth and I use that very carefully is because it is a story that is like E.T. meets Schindler's List. Now someone is going to blast me on that comparison but its an alien(s) trapped on Earth(E.T.) and they are in a concentration camp because of being different(Schindler's List). Sorry, Schindler's List is on HBO on Demand so it popped into my head as the example. I know nothing about this movie other than a few articles I read and the trailers but thats the vibe I am getting. Anyone else have an interpretation or idea?

#38 I think that is a perfect example. For over a year the this release has been the most antciapted for me other than the obvious. It looks like fine fim making and I don't think Jackson would put his name on this if it was not up to par.

It almost looks as if the Aliens are going to be driven to being violent, like it said "we mean you no harm" but our human nature were going to probably try to dig in to them research them and they will be driven to totally owning us and getting us outta there ship. But yeah how the fuck would we capture that big ass ship really hope theres an explanation for that. SO Original this is easily going to be an instant classic when it comes out.

compassion for the aliens. will this have the typical theme of how earthlings are killing each other and we "fear what we don't understand"? but, yet, we'll be in awe on the spectacular CGI that doesn't appeared CGI? I will def see it.

they should have kept the blur. more document style.

This movie looks fascinating. I definitely prefer the unblurred and subtitled trailer as it really gives us a better look at the alien perspective of events. This definitely looks like it will be one of the most intriguing and original ideas to hit theaters this summer. I look forward to it.

more realistic than anything so far...a refreshing change from vacuum cleaners that talk and turn into giant robots...really looking forward to this...

I have been waiting to see a feature length movie from Neill Blomkamp for a while now. I think it was on this site that I first heard about the little short movie trailer that he did a couple years back. And then of course the work he did on the Halo short films and commercials, those were amazing. When I saw the trailer at Wolverine I was so excited and was then more excited that it was coming out so soon, I thought it was further off. Now my goal is to get as many people to go see the film as possible.

Why do they use the Solaris ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307479/ ) soundtrack ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StICDw9aCYQ ) ? And what kind of question is "how do your weapons work?" anyway? I for one will not waste my money on this when they even fail like this with the trailer. I mean, come on...how do your weapons work?!? lolz
