Point Break Writer Peter Iliff Penning American Gladiators Movie

American Gladiators

After the American Gladiators made a huge television comeback on NBC with all new events and red, white and blue clad, muscle-bulging athletes, the next logical step was to somehow adapt it into a feature length motion picture as we reported earlier this year. Now it looks like the project is making some headway as Variety reports screenwriter Peter Iliff, (Point Break, Patriot Games) will write the film based on the television show which first premiered in the late 80's, however the story will see the titular characters as superheroes instead. Just when I thought Hollywood had run the well dry, here comes a drought. Read on!

This is about as ridiculous as it comes. This is an idea that would've been green-lit as a Saturday morning cartoon in the 80s. It's one thing to have the gladiators from the show move onto their own film careers (see Gina Carano, aka sexy American Gladiator known as Crush, who will be leading a Steven Soderbergh flick), but it's entirely another to base a film on a show based solely on candid athletic competition and turn it into a superhero movie. If you're going to do anything involving American Gladiators and superheroes, take the maniacal Don "Wolf" Yates and turn him into Kraven the Hunter from Spider-Man. You're welcome!

@ #1, You hit it right on the head, sir! We do in fact try to cover everything, even if the idea is as stupid as this. Many times we'll cover even the most terrible of ideas just to illustrate what ridiculously awful ideas Hollywood is taking rather than going with original content. And sadly that's happening exponentially more today. Hopefully there's good news around the corner. Until then, smoke'em if you got'em.

I want this movie inside me. OMG. Who will play Larry Csonka? Will it be in 3-D? Will smoke hiss and rise from beneath the audience seats when the Nerf arrow hits its intended target? Will the Eliminator be featured, or will the filmmakers go a more artistic route and choose someone to play the physical embodiment of The Eliminator? Will Cobra Starship update the theme song? Will the movie be called Breakthrough and Conquer: American Gladiators: The Movie? Will the actors earn 10 points for a win, 5 points for a draw, and no points for a loss? Clearly, this is the most anticipated movie of all time. If you don't agree with me, I challenge you to a pre-fab wall climb.
