Rodriguez Confirms Nimrod Antal is Directing Predators
Finally some confirmation! A few weeks ago, a rumor hit that The Descent director Neil Marshall would be directing Robert Rodriguez' Predators reboot. The very next day Rodriguez told everyone (through Harry Knowles) that the news wasn't true because he hadn't actually chosen the director yet (but had narrowed down the list). After some weeks of silence, we now have confirmation from Robert Rodriguez (via Ain't It Cool News) that Nimród Antal, of Kontroll and Vacancy, is set to direct Predators for Troublemaker Studios and 20th Century Fox. Don't worry, Rodriguez is making sure this is a very "non-studio" movie.
Rodriguez did also answer some questions for Harry regarding the project. Before we get more into his choice of Nimród Antal, this is what he had to say when asked to go into the story a bit more. "I can't go too much into the story right now, because we're still writing. But it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning." Very interesting statements. If you're looking for more details, we ran an article in April about what to expect or you can head to AICN.
As for choosing Nimród Antal, Rodriguez explains what is was that convinced him. "When I saw Armored, I could tell he's also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin [Tarantino] with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he'll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character driven action movie, because that's what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this." I trust that Robert Rodriguez made the right choice. Do you?

I hope for the best, AVP and AVP-Rotten must be forgotten 🙁

Vacancy? Consider this movie a flop. He's a terrible director. Neil Marshall would have been perfect.

We can only Hope that they do the Predator right. These studios have been on that "Cash Cow" shit for a minute now. I just wish they could make a good movie other than just making money off of the name.

I have faith in Robert. I trust he will steer this project in the right direction.

Thing is, if Rodriguez wants to have some fun—and he will—this movie will just be more crap n' camp. Im relieved he's not directing it, but don't really know what to think of Antal.

I will predict epic fail so as not to be too disappointed. Rodriguez has done little to impress me in quite a while... and... Nimrod? Rly? Who?

The opening scene of Aliens vs. Predator which featured a sweeping shot of the Predator's planet was compelling, but when people say they want a "Character driven movie" what they should be saying is, I want a story that someone living on earth can relate to going through. Aliens was relatable because it was essentially a mother daughter story caught up in marines ambush plotline. It just happened to be in space. The "predators" homeworld story was not what I was expecting to hear, and would be really expensive to pull off effectively, I'm thinking. I'm not so sure either of these guys are up to that task. Troublemaker would be smarter to re-boot this by taking it to its roots and doing a jungle or urban war-zone story, and this time have multiple predators involved. It may not be as "cool and dazzling" as saying you do it on the Predator planet, but troublemaker's specialty is lo-fi high octane movies. Always has been!

Sorry - opening scene of AvP Requiem. Which , btw, was the single worst movie I've ever paid money to see. EVER. The only thing that redeemed the horrible feeling I had after that was seeing Idiocracy for free, a few days later. THAT movie was SO good I saw it 10 times, in succession.

I'm excited by this news. I have faith in Rodriguez. I just hope they can pull this off with as little CG as possible

fingers crossed here, im hoping for the best! and to all you negative nacy's out there... shut the **** up with your needless negative outlook on something you haven't even had a taste of yet. Kontroll was pretty good, i doubt many of you who are so quick to already shoot this movie down haven't even seen it yet. you guys are like that stubborn asshole who won't even try a small bit of that awesome new ice cream flavor b/c you're heads' are just too far up your own asses. oh and have a nice day =D

Idiocracy was such a terrible movie...I guess I'm just not into that kind of slapstick moronic humor. I get that it's supposed to be satire, but it was still too ridiculous for my tastes.

I'll see it. I fucking love Predators, Suffered through both AvP and AvPR just to see my favorite iconic Aliens. I knew the movies would suck and try to kill everything i love, but going in knowing that they just made me remember why i love Predator 1 and Alien 1&2 so damn much. hopefully he gives us something new, and something awesome. If he doesn't well then... ya always got the classics!

I, too have faith! Robert has had a chance to camp it up with "Grindhouse", "Desperado", "From Dusk 'til Dawn" etc. I think he knows what he needs to do to do this material justice! I also hope he hires the wizards at the Stan Winston Studios and NOT Tom Woodruff and Alec Guinness! It would make a big difference in GETTING IT RIGHT! C'mon Arnold, your curtain call awaits!

I wonder what (besides more predators) "unspeakable horrors" are on their homeworld? Lovecraftian slimy slitherers or John Carpenter-The-Thing hideous shape-shifters? Either one could be cool if done well. They need to make the planet really wild and alien...er, I mean unearthly, you know eldritch!
zubzwank on Jul 2, 2009
If you have an IQ above 50, Idiocracy shows as it truly is, a pile of shit that lawyers even rise above. Sorry Luke, I'm not sure how you got into that. Still, this has...no promise. There's already a homeworld story and humans never find it. Second, the Predators never used Earth like they did in AVP because humans were here, they were the challenge, the hunt. Now humans on some unknown planet would make sense where they hunt Aliens, but we're looking at another AVP and not Predator. So they have no choice but to do it on Earth. AVP: War should have been turned live action. There are so many awesome stories, I don't see why Hollywood gets some lame ass writers to come up with stuff. As for Predator, they should run with Cold War or Concrete Jungle which would be like the second one but more Predators and their ships are there and...it's just fun to read and a very awesome ending! Then again, books are always better.

Nimrod(I always thought that was something one called a friend when he had fuctup?) directed Kontroll, it is quite good. Vacancy was worth watching, but not buying. Seems an odd choice of director. "...very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors..." Hmm! Maybe the Predators have unspeakable horrors roaming around on their planet to have something to skin after tea?

Well I have faith as well. I hope that this redeems the franchise and is a great movie to see. I too paid money to be burned by AvP and AvP:R, but I rationalize it this way. There hadn't been any Aliens(my favorite of the two) or Predator movies in a long time. And like a junkie jonesing for a fix I took the only thing offered and smiled while taking it. It wasn't till after the novelty wore off that I saw those movies for the let down that they were.

I hate Rodriguez and i'll hate him more if he screwed up this movie.

To #11 If u loved idiocracy then that just points out your horrible taste in movies... i dont care about anything as long as i get to see the Predators kick ass.... The Avp movies have been less than satisfactory but at least there were good action scenes... I'm sure this one will be good...

Here's my ultimate wet dream Mr. Cameron taking over the directorship and Liam Neeson going after the Predators - because they kidnapped his daughter!!!! Now there's a story! Dan
