Ryan Reynolds Still Deadpool, Liefeld Approves Fox's Plans

September 23, 2009
Source: Twitter

There have been a lot of developments related to the comic book movie world recently, from Disney buying Marvel, to even then news that Ryan Reynolds would be playing the Green Lantern (remember that?). In regards to Reynolds, when that casting news hit, most people thought that this meant he would be out as Deadpool in the spin-off Fox is developing (and had already greenlit). But we now have early confirmation from Rob Liefeld, one of the co-creators of Deadpool, that Reynolds is still on-board to play Deadpool. Liefeld spilled the news on his Twitter (via SHH) after a meeting with producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

Liefeld mentioned earlier on Tuesday night: "Walking into Deadpool movie meeting!!! Yowza!" Definitely setting the mood. And here was his response after getting out: "Great Deadpool movie meeting! Lauren Schuler Donner and her team are headed in the right direction!" Great news, especially from one of the creators of the character (along with Fabian Nicieza), but that's not at all. Here's what else he had to say:

"Deadpool movie checklist- DP in costume-check! Breaking 4th wall-check! Loads of killing-double check!"

"Deadpool movie- YES! Ryan Reynolds is on board!!!"

"Also excited to discuss possibilities of Cable in future X-films!!!"

Okay, okay, Liefeld just revealed quite a bit related to the Deadpool movie. Right after Wolverine came out earlier in the summer and the Deadpool spin-off was confirmed, former Fox exec Jeff Katz promised that it would "be classic Deadpool." And now Liefeld also confirms that he'll be breaking the fourth wall and killing lots of people - definitely classic Deadpool. And that comment about the iconic costume looking good (see the photo above of that costume) means quite a bit coming from the actual artist who came up with that iconic costume. If he approves of it, then I'm definitely in, and that's what it sounds like from his meeting.

Sure, this is all a bit vague right now, but it's great to hear this kind of stuff so early in the development process, especially for a character as beloved as Deadpool. Oh and that last quote, about the character Cable, is pretty damn cool, too. Cable is another character from the X-Men/Marvel Universe that is a fan favorite - maybe he'll finally get his big screen debut? And hopefully Reynolds does this right after Green Lantern?

I really hope Domino is in this...

I can't wait for this, huge deadpool fan. Should be awesome as all hell.

The_Kid on Sep 23, 2009

Approval from Liefeld is more worrysome than assuring.

SlashBeast on Sep 23, 2009

"Great news, especially from one of the creators of the character" blah, blah, blah.... Where have I heard this before??? And we all know how things usually turns out. I'll believe it when I see it. Liefeld is a tool....

The One on Sep 23, 2009

Alex. I like you. But you've got to stop getting so excited early on. You know and I know that this will lead to SHIT.

sean on Sep 23, 2009

Deadpool better be rated R

-Peter- on Sep 23, 2009

Cable should be in this movie. Deadpool & Cable comics are downright hilarious.

Cody on Sep 23, 2009

Ryan reynolds would also be great as the flash, but hes doing green lantern. Too bad.

Dre on Sep 23, 2009

I hope this time he wears a mask..

I've been a DP fan since his first appearence. And I really do like Reynolds as an actor. So I do support the combination of both wise asses to produce a film. As long as we just forget about his character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But, I've also been a Green Lantern fan since before I was a DP fan. And I just don't see Reynolds as Hal Jordan. I would have prefered Bradley Cooper over all. Shit, I would have even picked Scott Speedman over Reynolds. He just doesn't fit the profile at all and anyone who has been a fan of Jordan would have to agree. Now, the Flash would have been perfect. DC would kill everything if they had a Green Lanter film and a Flash film in the same year. Reynolds would make a great Wally West. But that's just my opinion. What the fuck do you care?

Marius on Sep 23, 2009

I still claim that he has no business playing the Green Lantern. Honestly, I have no idea what they are thinking on that one. Anyway. RR is too pretty to play a real Deadpool. Girls flock to movies to see him and his adorable smartaleck routine. This means there is one of two possiblities, An unscarred/unmanagled Deadpool for most of the movie, or a fudgeton of flashbacks. I am assuming they wouldn't be dumb enough to do the first one, so I guess it will be a 2 hour movie with an hour and 30 mins of flash backs. Oh well. I guess we will have to see. At least a Deadpool movie means that there will be at least some version of Weasel (who they will probably give powers to, lame) and hopefully they do some stuff with T. Rex.

Stevo on Sep 23, 2009

#5 that will never happen. Name a comic book movie that has made money rated R? Heck, name a Rated R comic book movie period.

branden on Sep 23, 2009

Just saw Woverine and it sucked royal d!ck. They also killed would be Deadpool at the end, so how does that work??? As far as Cable goes I think X-force is the best X-team ever created. Yes they should have Domino and yes they should have Shatterstar (one of the best characters ever.) They should also try to make it not suck. Which seems like it is a really difficult task.

sumonesumtime on Sep 23, 2009

I expect Cable to head up The New Mutants..and hopefully also be featured in the Deadpool movie...

Christopher M on Sep 23, 2009

Jay Baruchel for Weasel

nelson on Sep 23, 2009

It doesn't matter. Fox is going to manage to fuck it up anyway.

Governor on Sep 23, 2009

#11 300, Sin City, Blade (I think) without checking. I think a Cable movie would be awesome with the whole time jumping and possible X-Men inclusion.

Klaus on Sep 23, 2009

I just wet the geek bed. Baby jizz out my eyes. - I think realistically it will be terrible, they won't have the star of the show wearing a mask throughout the film, because they are paying for his mug. C'mon comic geeks, it very rarely works.

Crapola on Sep 23, 2009

#11: Watchmen was rated R too.

zibo fricka on Sep 23, 2009

People really like Cable? Man...I'm still up for a Deadpool movie despite all the crap FOX has put out. Deadpool was one if not my favorite Marvel character so I'm quite excited if they stay true, but it is FOX so, we'll see.

Liefeld involved scares me.. although i was never really looking forward to this movie much..

CL on Sep 23, 2009

Liefeld knows what he's doing and will help keep the material like the comics and that's a good thing.

MCat on Sep 23, 2009

If a massive hack like Rob Liefeld approves of your movie, your movie sucks. here's no involvement that he can have in the film that will do anything positive other than rendering some of the most physically impossible body proportions and poses.

1-7 on Sep 23, 2009

Joe Kelly did far more for the character than Liefeld. Rob created him, but other writers perfected him.

BookWorm on Sep 23, 2009

uuuhhh yeah Liefeld... just wait until Rothman gets his dirty hands on it.

teyhtr on Sep 23, 2009

If its not like Batman...forget about it

Trey on Sep 23, 2009

deadpool vs cable in the deadpool movie would be fucking great,it will probably end up being deadpool vs mickey long deadpool looks & sounds like deadpool i be there all the way, please fox don't fuck this up there would be a fucking lot of pissed off fans if you do.

zetsu on Sep 23, 2009

Number 5 - straight up!!! I totally agree. If this follows the same vein as ' good. Even if this will be rated R (which is doubtful, cause the producers need to get paid for a PG flick) it might not be more than a Punisher War Zone -> which was junk. Dominic West went from The Wire to War

Conrad on Sep 23, 2009

Ya I don't want to alarm anybody, but Rob Liefeld is an ASSHOLE. And anyone who DOESN'T know that clearly hasn't followed comics in the 90s. So really, no one should give a rat's ass what comes out of that guy's mouth. Learn how to draw hands!

Dan the Fan on Sep 23, 2009

This is how they should bring the Merc with mouth he is just simply the most ownage character in the Marvel Universe. I really can't wait with one of my favorite actors in the lead role...bring it! *w00t!*

Fisherr on Sep 23, 2009

OMG YES! Im so happy for Ryan Reynolds for Deadpool! I LOVE HIM!!! In a non-gay way!!! Im so excited. You guys have no idea.

Scott on Sep 23, 2009

I LOVE RYAN REYNOLDS!! yesss I can't wait either! This movie will be complete bad@$$

Aimee on Sep 23, 2009

This will be epic with Ryan Reynolds. He is perfect. !!

Jordan on Sep 23, 2009

Ryan Reynolds could be the best actor after this. He is a pure Deadpool fan himself. And his wife Scarlett is in IronMan. His family is into this stuff. He is born to play this role!! Glad for him!! This is definitely on my to watch list.

YRsf3 on Sep 23, 2009

Deadpool better stay true to the comics.

Madnezz344 on Sep 24, 2009

#13 just made me lol in real life. Good going man. You actually sound like a true Liefeld fan.

Stevo on Sep 24, 2009

I really do hope they pay attention this time and NOT screw Deadpool up. C'mon, When I was watching Wolverine, I enjoyed Wade Wilson. When he reappeared as Baraka(From Mortal Kombat) I was quite pissed. How, How, HOW!!!!!!! How could they do that to him. So upsetting.

Silence on Sep 24, 2009

You guys can't ever be pleased. Liefeld said he hated what fox did to deadpool in wolverine origins so he's on our side. To think his drawings will have any effect on the movie makes you a fool.

Cat on Sep 24, 2009

this sounds like another daredevil. there's no way they can do this one justice. it's sad that marvel was off to a good start with the first x-men and then the first spider-man, but their movies have been going downhill ever since.

MK-Ultra on Sep 24, 2009

If you want to see Ryan Reynolds in a brilliant movie, go see Chaos Theory. He's going to rock in both movies!
