FIRST LOOK
Short Korean Teaser Video for Bong Joon-ho's Mother

Earlier this week, in our update on The Host director Bong Joon-ho's upcoming sci-fi project, I mentioned that he had another film in the works titled just Mother. Thanks to both SlashFilm and Wildgrounds, we've got a very short teaser video today that gives us our first glimpse at Bong Joon-ho's latest work. In Mother, an asocial loser is framed as the perpetrator of a horrific murder and his hard-headed mother has to figure out who really did it to keep her son from going to prison. This is expected to premiere at Cannes in May this year. Apologies for the lack of English subtitles, but it should be worth a quick look anyway.
Watch the very first Korean teaser for Bong Joon-ho's Mother found on YouTube:
Mother is directed by Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, of Barking Dogs Never Bite, Memories of Murder, and the monster feature The Host most recently, as well as one of the segments of Tokyo!. The screenplay was co-written by Bong Joon-ho and Park Eun-kyo, of Crush and Blush previously. Starring as the mother in the film is Korean actress Kim Hye-ja, who has been absent from the big screen for ten years, last starring in Mayonnaise in 1999. Mother is being developed and sold internationally by CJ Entertainment in Korea, although it doesn't have a US distributor just yet. Mother is now available to watch via Magnolia Pictures.

The director says, "Her [Kim Hye-ja] image/persona is that of the All-Korean Mom [read: "All-American Mom"], but I wanted to see her portray a role that would go totally against that." So maybe this film will do for Kim what "American Gangster" did for Denzel Washington?

I am really looking forward to "Mother." If you like Bong, you HAVE to check out Tokyo! I can’t wait for the dvd. I think it comes out June 30 (www.tokyothemovie.com). I preordered it on Amazon, through the site. I can’t wait. Better that NY Stories. Best tryptich since Amorres Perroes.
