Short 'n Sweet Behind-the-Scenes Featurette for Whip It
Who wouldn't want to watch a bunch of normally sweet girls beating each other up in a roller rink, I mean come on, this looks so awesome! Apple has debuted a rather short, but sweet, behind-the-scenes featurette for Drew Barrymore's Whip It starring Ellen Page. The trailer for this hit back in July and the film itself debuts up in Toronto this month, so you'll probably be hearing about it a lot in the next few weeks. I don't even care that this looks cheesy or anything, I'm excited to see it, it looks like a good story packed with a lot of dirty fun, I'm expecting to have a great time. And as for Barrymore directing, she doesn't look half bad!

In Bodeen, Texas, the indie-rock loving Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in Austin and tries to join as Babe Ruthless.
Whip It!, which is not about that Devo song, is the feature directing debut of actor Drew Barrymore. The screenplay was written by Shauna Cross, of only Taking 5 previously. Cross also wrote the book that this is based on and plays roller derby as well. Fox Searchlight is bringing Whip It! to theaters on October 2nd.

This is stupid! There's no way girls can do what boys can.

As long as this movie isn't just another girl-power movie, as Drew Barrymore makes it out to be, it should be good. The trailer looks good, though I'm more likely to rent this than see it in theaters.

How many girls rollerskate today in an arena? Yeah I'm sure there's a big connection to be made between this movie and girls of today. Hollywood...please reconnect yourself to the real world instead of glamour projects. Thanks and take care, Reality
Realismo on Sep 4, 2009
In answer to Realismo: There are currently 445 roller derby leagues in 13 countries with over registered 16,500 participants. There are quite a few leagues that skate in sports facilities (arenas) though most have their games in roller rinks and roller hockey facilities using the more economically practical Women's Flat Track Derby Association flat track layout, rather than the expensive and logistically challenging banked track in the film. The track in the film is owned by the Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls in Oklahoma City, and is the same design and built by the same person as the LA Derby Dolls track in Los Angeles, where they're having games every 2 to 3 weeks right now. Since the film's screenwriter was a member of the LA Derby Dolls for three or four years, the film based on it naturally features a banked track. Also, there's a word for film and video projects that are based on the real world: Documentary. I don't think Whip It! is one of those. You took the words right out of my mouth, Frankenbike. According to our database, there were upwards of 128 roller derby events around the world in August. Many of those were doubleheaders, one or two were state championship tournaments. Between 2006 and 2008, there were 17 roller derby tournaments recorded, so far in 2009 there have been nine this year (including ones in Montreal and London), WFTDA is about to have four more regional tournaments and their national championship tournament. Then there's the second California tournament this year and another tournament in Dallas this December. State championship tournaments are growing in popularity. I predict that there will be a bout between an American and a British team within the next year. Bouts between U.S. and Canadian teams are almost commonplace. There's an official voted upon rankings system, an unofficial ranking system done by a news web site, and at least three unofficial computed rankings systems.
