Sundance Interview: Moon Writer/Director Duncan Jones

January 26, 2009

David Bowie and Duncan Jones

One of my favorite films coming out of Sundance is Moon, the sci-fi flick starring Sam Rockwell. The man behind it all, Duncan Jones, made both his writing and directing debut with Moon and proved that he's definitely a filmmaker to keep an eye on in the coming years. Immediately after screening the film, I frantically confirmed that I had an interview with Duncan, because there was so much I wanted to ask him. So here is my rather fascinating interview with him. Lastly, I should mention a big spoiler warning for this video, since we talk about some of the big plot elements that a few of you might not want to know.

Watch our Sundance interview with Duncan Jones:

Please be patient while loading the video - the file size is huge! Thank you!

As you see above, I'm trying a new format for interviews at Sundance this year using my Flip Mino. I apologize for the odd angle yet again, as we were rushed into this. For reference, what I showed him on my iPhone was that I have this Moon poster as my background. A lot of people always ask what movie it's from and I just wanted to show him that I love the poster. Additionally, Duncan was a bit upset that the interview was cut so short, so I've talked with him and will forward any follow-up questions over to him to answer. So if there's more you want to ask as well, let me know, and we'll work on a follow-up interview!

Is there a trailer for MOON anywhere?

TX9000 on Jan 26, 2009

Wow, Bowie still looks pretty good for his age, doesn't he?

It's always nice to see a director really jazzed about the projects they're working on, or film in general.

Fuelbot on Jan 26, 2009

No trailer yet, sorry. We'll let you know the moment there is one!

He looks a bit like Lance Bass in that picture.

From the clips I saw, I must say that this is just remarkable! Be sure to tell Duncan that he should expect an Oscar nomination for Sound Mixing and Cinematography to say the least! I'm sure there will many be others as well, and it really says something that from the entire 3 minutes of footage I saw I could just hear: "OSCAR" screaming in my ear! I definitely support a follow up interview. I know Duncan mentioned that his work in commercials sprung him into feature films, but someone doesn't just spring from doing effects for commercials and end up sitting across a table from Sam Rockwell a few months later haha. Maybe Duncan could expand on that a little more, about the process of making that step up to producing a feature film. Also, the effects are truly phenomenal. A little more on how he put together such a fantastic and incredibly realistic environment, including set, costume and those rovers would be great! Looking forward to more interviews and the theatrical release!

I am really looking forward to this. It looks like the perfect combination between a great sci-fi film and a small character study.

Trying to think of something to say but #10 sumed my thoughts up so well, I can't think of anything to add. Oh.. when can we see it in theaters? =D

I don't know if his film is good or not, but he is just adorable. What a sweetie-pie. So fresh and unpretentious.

Hi Duncan, I watched the video with a big grin, realizing how strange it is, that I felt proud for someone I have never seen in my life. I think it is quite hard for a celebrity kid to step out of the shadow of his famous parents and to find his own calling and I am sure, you did a great job with Moon. Although I must admit, that I really hate science fiction, haha, some Films like silent running really touched me and I just loved the great soundtrack. So I will definitely watch your movie and hope it will be released here in Germany soon. I wish you all the best - and loads of Oscars;-) Sorry for my clumsy English... Greetings, Ina.

Hi Duncan, I wish you all the best for your film "moon" and hope it will be released soon in France; It's a shame, we have to wait so long to see your film here. I've been watching the "ciné revue" and they don't even talk about your film yet. so make sure it will be "à l'affiche" here pretty soon. I will try to see your film with an old friend of mine. She's a delicious and fantastique English lady, she is 81 soon, and she will be very very proud of you... her name is Pat, and we are friend for more than 20 years now.. a lifetime.. Amicalement, MuMu

This movie looks interesting from the conspiracy POV. Will sheeple figure how to escape the slaughterhouse? Cross between 2001, Silent Running, Solaris and Idiocracy. But without Cliff Martinez. You’d think a Bowie would get killer music. Here’s what happens in the Real World after only a couple days on the moon:

why terry gilliam, ridley scott and neil gaiman and not alan moore , jodorowsky, brian eno and kenneth anger? Or Alexander Sukhorov? A shame Nicholas roeg isn't around. hmmmmm if he wants to do one set in berlin, hopefully he's aware of dr marbuse. fassbinder, wim wenders and metropolis. As wellas the das experimenten / untergang bloke. The dr who franchise would do well to work with more people like this. Hopefully he gets to work with space 1999 or the argentenian film man looking south east. Is he planning to work with his father, would have been fantastic if david or eno instead of kevin spacey would have been the onboard hallike gone ok computer Lunar computer.
