Thomas Haden Church Cast in John Carter of Mars, Too?
We've got another bit of casting news related to Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars to reveal today. Yesterday it was announced that Wolverine co-stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were cast in the Disney production as the two lead actors. Now today we also learn that Thomas Haden Church might be joining as well. Church appeared on Jeffrey Lyons' show ReelTalk to talk about appearing in Imagine That. When asked about his variety of roles, both comedies and dramas, Church said, "I'm probably going to do a huge science fiction drama at Disney called John Carter of Mars in the spring and that's a very dramatic role."
Church didn't say what role he would be playing, so we don't exactly know what his involvement is, but it's good to have him on-board anyway. Not only is he a great comedic actor (in movies like Sideways and Smart People specifically), but I also enjoyed his performance as Sandman in Spider-Man 3 quite a bit (one of the best parts). He's a great actor and I hope his role in John Carter of Mars is is an important one (and not just some forgettable supporting character). I'm not familiar enough with Edgar Rice Burroughs' books to speculate which character he might be playing, but I'm sure there are others who will have a better idea.
For more information on this John Carter of Mars adaptation from Wall-E director Andrew Stanton, read our initial announcement from last year, follow-up interview with Stanton, announcement of Michael Chabon's involvement with the script, or big casting news from earlier this week. Another good choice?

The book is about a guy being transported to Mars through a cave on Earth, after that he pretty much goes on a killing spree for three books and is a major support character in the following eight, and the LAST volume, titled John Carter of Mars isn't all too great. Story is not all that important here, it is about saving Dejah Thoris and killing everyone else, three great books, the rest is mediocer but a fun read. I can't see this movie being made justice too.. I was really excited when I saw Rodriguez and this film together, now though.. not so much.

This is a boring line of actors for Scranton's new movie....whoa. Thanks Andreas for summing up this story for us. That's exactly what I needed to know about this, cause I never heard of this book series before..... Now that I can see what you probably mean, I don't have any interest for this one at all. Still like Haden though, he's cool.

After Stanton's work with Pixar I would trust him with the type of project that sounds boring on paper. The plot may be exceedingly simple, but the execution of this plot could be brilliant.

"Killing spree" never sounds boring. But it does sound like something Disney will never do justice to.

I really didn't know too much about the guy until he appeared on the last spider-man movie. I won't know how he did in this flick but I haven't heard anyone raving about his performance.
