Warner Brothers Picks Up Futuristic Samson and Delilah Pitch
by Alex Billington
January 27, 2009
Warner Brothers has signed a seven-figure deal to acquire a pitch for a story called Samson, a futuristic retelling of the biblical Samson and Delilah story. The pitch and screenplay will be written by Scott Silver, of The Mod Squad and 8 Mile previously as well as the upcoming Fighter. Warner Brothers has also set Francis Lawrence of Constantine and I Am Legend, as the director on the film. Erwin Stoff, of Constantine, A Scanner Darkly, and Street Kings previously, will produce through 3 Arts Entertainment. WB won the bidding battle in hopes of turning the big idea in this into a tentpole film where the "concept is the star."
Samson is a Herculean figure, who is granted tremendous strength through the Spirit of the Lord to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats unachievable by ordinary men. He eventually falls for a woman named Delilah, who betrays him when the Philistines convince her to tell them the secret of his strength. He finally tells her that he will lose his strength if she cuts off his hair, which she does, and subsequently he does lose his strength and is captured. How this story can be made futuristic, I really don't know? Either way, I wish Silver and Lawrence and Stoff the best of luck on this. Maybe it will be the next big thing?

I love how Hollywood feels that the world can't handle stories of the bible being told in thier original way, but whatever it takes right?

I'm kind of excited about this. I think it's a great story, and a futuristic retelling sounds different and cool. This is kind of a leap for Hollywood, considering they're no longer "cool" with the Bible -- what a change from when Heston's days! -- but I'm really looking forward to seeing this concept play out. I just hope they don't cheese it up. The story is too simple and too well-known for any "loosely-based" rendition.

Brilliant concept, I'm looking forward to similar movies like this. Maybe Joshua?

Haha, a few months ago i finished reading a script about "Samson and Delilah". Even though the explanation sounds dull the story is indeed great, excellent dialogue i must add. How they plan on implementing it in to a futuristic style is beyond me. But i enjoy a good surprise. =)

have seen the old 50s (?) version on some old turner classic movies channel long time back........ that was fun back then.... sounds interesting.. but with francis lawrence... not so sure... nothing against him, he has done a decent job though on constantine and i am legend ( i still blame the script), but his CGI zombies look like shit!
