Watch This: First Official Repo Men Trailer Starring Jude Law
Universal has just debuted the first deliciously red band trailer for Repo Men over on MySpace. This is the Hollywood rip off of Darren Bousman's Repo! The Genetic Opera but without all of the singing. It's about a future where human organs can be manufactured to replace defective ones, but they're expensive. And if you don't make your payments, the repo men will come and rip out the organs right out of your body. Repo Men stars Liev Schreiber, Jude Law, Forest Whitaker, Alice Braga, Carice van Houten, and RZA. This trailer is red band and is pretty bloody, brutal, and gory (so watch out!), but it also looks pretty damn good.

Set in the future, the story revolves around a man (Jude Law) who struggles to make the payments on a heart he purchased. He must go on the run before said ticker is repossessed by the company that owns it.
Repo Men is directed by British first-time feature filmmaker Miguel Sapochnik, of only a short from 2000 called The Dreamer previously. This is based on Eric Garcia's novel titled The Repossession Mambo. The script was co-written by Garcia and TV writer Garrett Lerner ("Smallville", "Boston Public", "House M.D."). Universal is bringing Repo Men to theaters everywhere starting on April 2nd, 2010 next year. Thoughts?

It doesn't look that bad, but it's obviously a ripoff of Repo ! The Genetic Opra, but with a shit load of action put in. I guess Hollywood thinks everything is easer to sell as long as it has action in it.

Has Hollywood no shame? Repo hasn't even been out for two years and now it's getting ripped off? Fuck that shit.
Nemo on Dec 23, 2009
There was an comic from 2000AD where people had to pay for clean air and if you didn't keep up the payments it cut off and you suffocated , kindo reminds me of that, I'd watch this on tv for sure.

FOREST WHITAKER RLLY??? the man is a well equipped actor but not for this kind of stuff not ACTION

Now how is this a Hollywood rip-off of Repo! The Genetic Opera? Repo was shot in Toronto and released by Lionsgate. That hardly makes Repo Men a Hollywood rip-off. The basis for Repo! The Genetic Opera was The Necromerchant's Debt, which told the story of a graverobber in debt to a Repo Organ Man. It was performed on stage, and when it became a success creators Smith and Zdunich expanded on the universe to create all of the storylines that became Repo! The Genetic Opera. Repo Men is based on Eric Garcia's (Matchstick Men) The Repossession Mambo. Clearly not the basis for Repo! The Genetic Opera. It may have provided inspiration for the creators of The Genetic Opera, but it was not an adaptation. Repo Men is an adaptation of the novel. To call it a rip-off would be calling Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds a rip-off of Enzo Castellari's Inglorious Bastards.

I am sold... not only for the potential of this film, but of Jude Law's acceptance of his receding hair line.

@7 This is a rip-off of Repo! The Genetic Opera because Repo! was pitched to Universal and they wouldn't pick it up because of the singing and then they went and made this after they found out Lionsgate was making Repo! The Genetic Opera. Doesn't matter what the source material is, which of course, this plotline isn't exactly original as it's been done in comics and novels before, but to release this movie not two years after Repo! is really low of them.

Rip-off or not, the entire premise of the film is completely stupid. Just typical "look how evil the big evil corporation is!" movie, except this one isn't even remotely believable. Just more super-slick "dark" techno-punk garbage with too much CGI bullshit, slow-motion and a story so ludicrous, the only way to get asses in theaters is to cram a buttload of pointless violence and explosions into it. A better title would have been "Movie For Stupid People Because That's What We Think Of You" Unfortunately, this thing will get a decent opening weekend because they have lots of action and shit. They'll make $100 Million with this pile of crap, even though no one will like it.
Squiggly_P on Dec 23, 2009
How about Jude Law being a bad ass? And forrest whitaker...ummm...yeah actions not his thing.
JP on Dec 23, 2009
So, did I see that right, they show the death of the Liev Schreiber character in the trailer? wtf?
captain subtext on Dec 23, 2009
What #4 said.. I'm amazed this is being ripped off already, and I'm also surprised that they actually even bothered to alter the storyline. Despite all of this, I'll still watch it most likely. I was not a huge fan of the musical, although it did have a couple good songs, but it was good enough to watch a couple times.
case on Dec 23, 2009
Does this mean Jude Law will not be acting in Rom-Coms anymore?
Brandon on Dec 23, 2009
they pretty much showed the whole movie. so lame........
Pandudu on Dec 23, 2009
hey that looks pretty bad ass, kinda predictable and stuff, almost seems like Jason Statham should be in it, but I'll prob still watch.

hi on Dec 23, 2009
Jeez people its not a rip-off. The movie is based on a book that Eric Garcia started writing in 2003 and the movie has been in production since 2007.
big789 on Dec 23, 2009
Looks like some awesome action.
Cody on Dec 23, 2009
This kinda looks like the writer of this watched the braodway play for Repo! the Genetic Oprea and was like " You know that was pretty cool, but you know what aould have been cooler?" SO it doesn't really seem like a rip off but more like fan fiction.
TheSaint on Dec 23, 2009
#2 - yea, movies would sell a lot better with NO action in them - END SARCASM #13 - i think you should just give up watching movies. i can't imagine you enjoying anything. hey, this looks good. law and whittaker are doing their usual great job and the story is interesting. (i like the moral dilemma facing law) i don't see this as a rip-off at all. this movie doesn't have the singing. (thank god) so, it comes off as different to me.
beavis on Dec 23, 2009
I don't care if it's derivative or not (I'm talking about the whole turning-on-your-former-employer theme), I think the trailer made me want to see it, which is the whole point of trailers
Jaf on Dec 23, 2009
ill watch both versions because i did like both trailers, nuff said!!!
yojoe on Dec 23, 2009
*sigh* Looks good, but why do I feel like this is just one big middle finger to Repo! The Genetic Opera?? ps... cgi blood fail. havent we learned that yet hollywood??
Toucmyinfection on Dec 24, 2009
Really stupid. What a waste of time and money and more importantly what a waste of FILM.
filmfan111 on Dec 24, 2009
I don't get why you'all are whining and complaining as if you've invested a dime over this film. Sometimes, movies are made just to entertain. No one is forcing you to see this so shut up if you don't have any constructive comment.

Uhhhh. I hate when people say "rip-off". Repo! was a musical. Les Miserables was a musical. Everything is a fucking musical at some point but it doesn't mean that someone didn't have the right mind to turn it in to a film, as well. Or a better film for that matter. Fuck, it was a book before anything. And it was a good book. This might be a good movie. Win?
Ozzie Davis on Dec 24, 2009
wow.... i just saw the trailer 😀 this looks solid i dont know if its been ripped off or adapted (i just wish each rip off would look like this one) or how well adapted, but this looks good... and about time jude law show some kick ass action blood and gore 😀 i am on the train for this one

#26 - beavis: I enjoy lots of movies, and lots of big action movies. I enjoyed Avatar. I enjoyed Crank 2. I just can't enjoy a movie that expects me to take something like organ repossession seriously. I've never seen 'repo: TGO', but the fact that it was a musical / horror made it out - in my opinion - to be more of a dark comedy, the way Rocky Horror was. This flick actually wants me to believe that the government of wherever this is taking place - the US I'm guessing - has allowed corporations to brutally murder their customers. Maybe it would work if this was a dark comedy, but it's just an action movie. They want me to take that aspect of the film seriously, and they hang whatever drama there might be on that premise. It's just a really bad idea. But hell, I might be wrong. Maybe the script is a lot more clever than I've given them credit for. They could be holding some key bit of information back or something. I just somehow doubt that.
Squiggly_P on Dec 24, 2009
Based off of some quick Internet research, it seems "Repo!" was around before the book that inspired this movie.
Just Sayin' on Dec 24, 2009
Ripoff = fail. Turning a wicked fun musical into this crap = fail.
me on Dec 24, 2009
This movie has everything a like.. blood, violence, sex, organs being hacked out, and clearly a bit of character development after Jude Laws character gets an organ of his own. SOLD! Looks way more interesting than the usual boring Hollywood garbage.

whats thats song that plays when he cuts out the liver and Universal shows up on screen???

Repo! Genetic Opera was a great movie, in the fact that it was entertaining and interesting. better lead female would have helped it alot. this looks like a ripoff, even knowing its not. poor move Universal. poor move. i'll pass. looks like a worse story than Genetic Opera. at least that didn't take itself too seriously.
dave13 on Dec 25, 2009
Forest Whitaker is awesome.
Robbie on Dec 27, 2009
Most of you people are stupid, pretty much every single movie that comes out these days are a ripoff of another movie it happens all the time so for the love of god stop crying and grow a pair! Genetic Opera actually kinda sucks balls when you watch it more then once!!!!!!!!!!!
Chad on Dec 27, 2009
I'm going to chime in here because there are obviously a lot of uninformed folks out there as to the origins of Repo! The Genetic Opera. It was NOT originally released in 2008. It was been around since the mid 90's, but has had a cult following, much like films such as Rocky Horror Picture Show and Boondock Saints have had. Repo! The Genetic Opera held its official large scale theater release in 2008 once the writers and director acquired enough fanbase to do so. That said, I think it's clear which movie was established first. However, this type of thing has been happening in Hollywood for ages. This new Repo Men movie is targeted at a completely different audience than The Genetic Opera audience, and that's what Universal is trying to accomplish. It may be a good movie, but I encourage anyone who would like a truly unique experience who doesn't want the same old guns, explosions, etc to check out http://www.repo-opera.com Thanks!

Violence. Death. More violence. More gruesome deaths. And sadism. Saws, Hostels, Halloweens, Friday 13th, CSIs, Bones, Dexter, Medium, etc. etc. etc. What a morbid obsession the US has with death, violence and pain. But sex - no, wait - naked people (neither victims nor corpses I mean)? Noooo- God forbid! What a bunch of perverted puritans. Bah.
Alex C. on Jan 7, 2010
wow that is fucked up
ish or obama on Jan 12, 2010
What's hilarious is people seem to think that Repo! the Generic Opera invented the idea that has been in cyberpunk books and games for the last 30 plus years. And Repo! has only really been around since about 1999. They used (and abused) an idea already established and Repo Men is just using the same cyberpunk idea. After seeing Repo! and reading the full description for the movies they don't sound anything similar past having men who do repossession with organs made by a massive corporation. Other than that the plots really diverge and are different animals appealing to different genre's. People need to give it a rest.

Regardless of where Repo the Genetic Opera got it's idea it is the first movie with this theme, if not it's at least extremely hard to find another and few have heard of any others. The problem is, while the Genetic Opera is popular enough with the subcultures with it's cult following, it is not popular enough for the masses to have any idea it really exists. This is the part that saddens me most, they will probably go down as the first to do this theme because nobody will have a clue about the real trailblazer. I also agree that putting this movie out this soon is just all wrong. We get a new Batman franchise every twenty years or so, that's twenty freaking years. Two is not nearly enough to constitute a reimagining or a retelling or a rewhatever. It's just ripping someone off. Really if you want me to believe that this repomen movie is not just cashing in on an awesome idea from an already made movie I will have to know that they at least address the Genetic Opera and give a little credit. Don't even get me started on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and twilight...
