Worth Watching - Feb 26: Funky Trailer for Big Man Japan

Magnolia has debuted the domestic trailer for the fifth film in their Six Shooter Film Series series titled Big Man Japan. I don't know what the heck this is, but it looks so insanely ridiculous, that it might actually be fun to watch in the end. It played at a few film festivals and actually got into Cannes, which means it may not be as bad as it initially looks, but I can't really tell. I've heard some good things from some friends as well, but this trailer makes me very skeptical. Just know that I'm not trying to say this is any cult classic in making or anything, but it's not exactly a throwaway indie either. Take a look if you're curious!

An eccentric 40 year old man lives alone in a decrepit house in Tokyo. He periodically transforms into a giant and defends Japan by battling similarly sized monsters that turn up and destroy buildings.
Big Man Japan is both co-written and directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto, who made his directorial debut with this film. The screenplay was co-written by Matsumoto and Mitsuyoshi Takasu. This first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in 2007 and was eventually picked up by Magnet Releasing as part of the Six Shooter Film Series. Big Man Japan will arrive in limited theaters starting on May 15th this summer.

Saw this film at the film festival in Rotterdam last year. Had a pretty good time. If you like weird Japanese stuff, you should definitely check it out.

HA! I was lucky enough to see this at a local film festival 2 years ago. Believe me, it's even more messed up than what you see in the trailer. Imagine going to see that movie without having any idea what it is about like I did.

the dude who directed this, hitoshi matsumoto is one of the most famous comedians in japan. this is his debut film, and it was crazy hyped in japan cuz everything this guy does is genius. but this movie, to be honest, was WHACK. it was recognized as the worst movie of the year in japan for 2008. (or 2007?) but i love matsumoto, so i hope he continues to do his thing. ps- check out his comedy group, DOWNTOWN on youtube. this man is a comedic genius.

How is this NOT the awesomest looking movie in the world? It reminds me of a 70's Japanese show called Megaloman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaloman) and the special effects don't seem too far off either. This is gonna be awesome!

Oh. my god. That is crazy. Wow. I'm with #4, seriously, it was already weird and then the monsters just absolutely brought the crazy weirdness level through the roof. monster w/ the swinging eyeball inbetween the legs?? but then i watched it again. it was at his stomach. but it sure didn't seem like it at first. and that man monster w/ the petals?? wow crazy!
