Writer Update on 'Magdalena' Adaptation with Jenna Dewan

There's an under-the-radar project we haven't written about yet called Magdalena. It's an adaptation of a Top Cow comic book that already has a cast, a writer, and a director. Magdalena chronicles the adventures of a direct descendant of Mary Magdalene named Patience who protects the world against evil using a variety of supernatural powers. Writing the script is Holly Brix (The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations) and set to direct is Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura, who made his US debut with The Midnight Meat Train. Set to star as Patience is Step Up actress Jenna Dewan, along with Luke Goss as her mentor, Kristof.

MTV just talked with the screenwriter, Holly Brix, who talked openly about what she's planning to do, even though she hasn't even officially started writing. Here's one of her better answers about choosing a story.

"Obviously, I read all the comics and we talked about different versions of the story, but the one I found most compelling was Patience—her arc in becoming the Magdalena. We decided to focus the movie on her. It's the transfer of power from her mother's reign as the Magdalena to hers," Brix explained.

According to MTV, everyone is referring to Magdalena as a mix of The Da Vinci Code and other action movies like Wanted. So is that accurate? "I do [think it is]. It's definitely a supernatural action movie, so I think Da Vinci Code is a good reference as far as all the Catholicism in it. But in addition to that story, it's also a really straightforward action movie. There's not a lot of secret codes to unlock and that sort of thing." Sounds pretty damn cool. At least it sounds like something I'd love to see more from before I decided if I'm in or out. I expect they'll have something at Comic-Con next year and I'll be anxiously awaiting that debut.

We'll keep you updated on Magdalena. As of now, Brix is going to start work on writing the script for the next few months, then expects there to be a quick turnaround on shooting (hopefully). In the meantime, we also suggest you check out some of the comics that this is based on - visit to pick some up.

It's a go- IF they respect traditional Christian dogma. I'm no fundamentalist, but it would sure be an unexpected twist for a Hollywood production.

Just read on Luke Official site he is on a flight to China to film Witchville. Now that does not sound like a comic book movie; but it does sound interesting.
