Zack Snyder's Guardians of Ga'hoole Movie Rounds Up a Cast

Guardians of Ga'hoole - Zack Snyder

It's been quite awhile since we heard about Zack Snyder's forthcoming adaptation of the children's book series Guardians of Ga'hoole. After the project was announced in early 2008, there was some minor casting news way back at the beginning of this year, but development has been pretty mute since then. Now THR's Heat Vision adds a whole bunch of new cast members who will lend their voice to the 3D animated feature including Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix Trilogy) and David Wenham (300) as well as a handful of even more actors after the jump.

Also voicing characters will be Aussie actors Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Emilie de Ravin, and Jay Laga'aia, as well as English actors Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren and Jim Sturgess. This rather impressive voice cast will bring characters to life in the story of Soren (Sturgess), a young owl enthralled by his father's epic stories of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones. After Soren is kidnapped by owls of St. Aggie’s, a place where owlets are brainwashed into becoming soldiers, he and his new friends escape to the island of Ga’Hoole, to assist its noble, wise owls who fight the army being created by the wicked rulers of St. Aggie’s.

The first film will condense the first three books in the series, so if any are to follow, it's safe to assume we won't see 11 more films on the horizon. Of course if it turns out to be a success, it just might get milked for all its worth. The film is currently in post-production aiming to meet a release date in fall of 2010. Snyder's live action films (300, Watchmen) have always had a certain unreal quality to them, so I think jumping into the animation world will suit him quite well. Consider me intrigued for the time being as we wait for more.

This sounds great. I mean you really must admire the guy who tackles such difficult subject matter and now he's taking a dive into a whole new medium... in terms of his career- he's only increasing his range. I'm sure the film will deliver.

#1 - It's a "side" project. Kind of like, make a kids movie just to do it because it's a good story. He's co-directing this while directing Sucker Punch at the same time. So this will be done and out before Sucker Punch is, oddly enough.

Right now I'm more interested in Heavy Metal, and his segment. Sucker Punch is up there as well, as for this no doubt I'll see, mainly because of Weaving, and Rush along with Wenham.

300 was funky, and Dawn of the Dead was AWESOME!!!! It's too bad watchmen sucked, hopefully this will be good!

Most of this casting news is nearly a year old, so I'm mystified that it's suddenly being treated as a hot news item. Hugo Weaving, for example, recorded his voiceovers nearly a year ago (he plays the supporting character Grimble) and mentioned the project throughout the summer in interviews. Ryan Kwanten and Emilie de Ravin have also talked about the film and their characters. As far as I can tell the only heretofore unannounced cast member in this new item is Sam Neill. Whoever says previous press coverage of Guardians only revealed "minor casting news" wasn't paying much attention: Weaving, Rush, Kwanten, de Ravin, Sturgess and Wenham were all announced by last February.

Quick correction (and i feel like i'm nit-picking sorry), but Jay Laga'aia is actually a New Zealander Calling a kiwi (or New Zealander) and Australian is a bit of an insult lol

Abbie Cornish is also in Sucker Punch? Could Zack have found a female muse for his future films?

Can he just concentrate on Sucker Punch? I need my Vanessa Hudgens & Abbie Cornish fix.
