Angelina Jolie May Play the Evil Queen in Disney's Maleficent

Just earlier this week, Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland writer Linda Woolverton was brought on to write Disney's Maleficent, a live-action take on the evil queen from the 1959 animated classic Sleeping Beauty. We already know that Burton is circling the film as one of many potential projects for him to direct next, and now the project might gain even more steam as LA Times says Angelina Jolie has become quite interested in the project lately and is eager to sign on as the evil queen. However, with no deal, script or Tim Burton's official involvement yet (which could be part of her interest), this could just as easily not come to fruition.
With no other projects lined up after she finishes shooting The Tourist, there's nothing to stop Jolie from boarding the project except herself. Jolie would certainly be a very interesting choice for the role of the evil queen, whose story would be told in a Wicked-like fashion as to how the character became such a vile queen. And although taking on a villain as a main character seems kind of dark, this is Disney we're talking about, which would actually be an interesting change of pace for Jolie who has never really starred in a family film. Anyway, I'm interested to see how this turns out. What do you think of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent?

Not a fan but she could totally pull it off. As for Tim Burton I hope he focuses on Addam's Family first.

I bet this role comes naturally for her. The dumbass's who say they're surprised it's not Carter, She plays a witch in AIW, why would she play the same role again.

Sounds good so far. If Tim Burton is going to direct anything he's mentioned to be his next project; it's this. Not that awful sounding Adams Family reboot.

Just a note: Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty is a fairy... an evil fairy. The "Evil Queen" is a character from Snow White & the Seven Dwarves.

So the next question has to be, will TB create a new character for Johnny Depp? Perhaps a spurned lover that drove her to wickedness? I'm excited already.

if she's going to be maleficent, then this picture is doomed. i adore burton's movies, but i can't stand the woman or her acting. any decent movie with her in the lead role is automatically going to be overshadowed just by having her in it. and to crump's brother - Helena played the Red Queen in AIW.. she's an evil witch in HARRY POTTER.

I'd like it, I guess. I just think they CAN'T screw up this movie because it's Maleficent we're talking about. Best damn evil queen ever! There's this weird kinda misterious thing about Jolie that could work very well for the role.

Whom to choose as Maleficent is a big deal. She's a frontwoman for all the Disney villains. And even more people know about her from when the character was used heavily in the Kingdom Hearts videogame as a main villain. Angelina Jolie is a sharp choice. With her, I think it's ready to be headed in a nice sophisticated direction. But I worry that the studio will put forth something on the order of Susan Sarandon's character Queen Narissa from "Enchanted". That was campy. I think if Jolie plays Maleficent, it really needs to be taken far more seriously, like Lord-of-the-Rings-Serious. Overall, I like Tim Burton, and I like Jolie, but I don't see them working together. Maybe I'm wrong, but Burton has always made it abundantly clear on-screen that his films are his own, and I don't want to see Jolie struggling to be seen from behind Burton's soft lighting and dark shadows. Honestly, I hated his recent Alice in Wonderland. I think it was really awkward. The Red Queen was sort of the Queen of Hearts, but they're two different characters! But the it could still work, if Burton can remember how important Maleficent is in the grand scheme of Disney marketing; and how his aeshetic is sometimes too niche for the story he's trying to tell. Be careful.

Being evil is no far stretch for her...just like playing crazy for Girl Interrupted. She is crazy and evil in reality. Would never see a movie with her involved...EVER.

OH please no! Sleeping beauty is my favorite disney movie and i have always thought Maleficent to be the best villain. I hope they do NOT cast Angelina Jolie as her. I really have nothing against her and I'm sure she would do great in the end, but PLEASSEEE someone else. I would acutally love if they got a nobody to play her. Or please just anyone else. I can't see Helena playing her though anyway. While i do think she would do a better job than Jolie, I feel like Maleficent is TOO evil for Helena. She plays more of the strange characters. Sure the Red Queen and Bellatrix are evil, but they also have a goofy, crazy side. I don't see Maleficent having this. I have heard people say they want Meryl Streep or Michelle Pfeiffer play Maleficent. While they are probably too old for the part, i think that, that is more of the direction that they should go with.
