Big Rumor: Jamie Bell Already Selected as New Spider-Man?
by Ethan Anderton

Source: Bleeding Cool, The Playlist
Despite a big internet campaign to get comedian/actor Donald Glover (of "Community" and Mystery Team) an audition for Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, a big rumor has surfaced from Bleeding Cool (via The Playlist) that says British actor Jamie Bell (King Kong, Defiance), who was on the shortlist of considered actors we brought up last month, has already been chosen as the new webslinger in Marc Webb's reboot. Obviously, the rumor is helped by the fact that Bell was on the shortlist of actors in consideration for the role, but remember when we all thought that John Krasinski was the frontrunner for Captain America?
Of course, if this does turn out true, I'll be the first to say that I'm immensely pleased with the decision. Bell was my favorite actor out of the bunch that was brought up because of his versatility and experience with big effects driven flicks like King Kong and more recently, The Adventures of Tintin franchise. Of course, since he already has a film trilogy that he's dedicated himself too, that might create problems for his availability on the Spider-Man front. But for now, this must be taken with a grain of salt as we'll surely be hearing more rumors down the line until we get official word from the studio. Would you be happy with Jamie Bell?

I could live with that. He's better than most of the other names that have supposedly been in consideration. I liked him a lot in Jumper, even though the movie itself was pretty bad.

Thumbs up! I totally support Bell as the new new Spidey.

Oh dear.. this would be a huge mistake - producers WILL loose millions casting him as Spiderman, I've warned you. 😉

Way too old. 23 year old playing a 15 year old? Really

I'd be very happy if this is the case, he's got the range and intensity (Undertow, Hallam Foe) needed to separate him from Maguire which I think is key in this reboots success. Coming so close to the previous films, they need a lead who's distinctly different from Tobey, but who is still a convincing Peter Parker... definitely my favourite of the short-list.

Wow more crap from the "SonySpider" thats what this movies new name should be. I can really tell how much of a different direction there going, more like the same direction. I cant wait till this flops.

#7 I thoguht he was gonna be senior? So shouldn't it be 17 or 18? He looks young too, not like it matters.

Sure, what the hell. I can't really think of a better choice. I don't think anyone bought John Krasinski as Cap, though.

Let's have some serious ballzie-ness here, shall we? No more white guys! Peter's an awesome character, and I loved Raime's films (all three, dammit!), but let's try something new here. Heck, Marvel's been rebooting Spidey 4 or 5 times in the last 10 years alone. Let's have some moxie in the film dep't, and *really* reboot this puppy! Go, Donald!

At first, Bell doesn't really thrill me, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. My initial thought is they could do better, but if I'm off-base, that's fine with me.

I like Bell but damn its way too early for this.

He seems like a decent actor and he's got a good sense of humor, so I'll wait to see if he can pull it off or not. Either way, anything's better than those Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man" movies. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make a movie where Peter Parker looks like Harry Osborn (and vice versa), Mary Jane isn't attractive, Spidey kills every villain he faces and shows everyone his true identity, and mopes and cries about everything in his life needs to have a stack of the comics shoved down his throat. Hopefully this reboot will have him as the energetic, life-loving, wisecracking Spidey that I've been reading since I was 7.

Jamie would be a great Peter Parker. If you've seen any of his work, I'm sure you know he's a great actor, and he is exactly what this franchise needs.

Donald Glover is easily the best choice.

Awww Wow, he was the troll in Jumper? Not sold on this guy. I'd say screen the dude from community, not as some sort of "rooney rule" but to see if he can carry the part. I'm sorry, but this jumper guys doesn't have it.

@20 I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO AGREES @21 Spider-Man is red and blue. Yes Peter Parker has always been white, but think about it, what in Peter Parker's background insists that he has to be white? You guys can call me crazy or whatever the hell you want, but his story would work just as well with a nerdy, funny black kid. From someone who has seen Mystery Team, Community, or any of the Derrick Comedy videos, Donald Glover would be a perfect casting choice for Spider-Man. Who could be better at beating up bad guys while cracking jokes out of all of the people that have been rumored to play the part?

pulp fiction212 on Jun 7, 2010

@25 Ah, maybe the fact that he's always been white since spiderman was created? The movie will bomb if a black dude plays spiderman. I'm far from racist, and I actually love Glover, he is hillarious in Community. But a black Peter Parker? That's a white guy's name, it won't sound or feel right.

he's a good choice. if he is actually cast as Spidy, I'll be more optimistic about this reboot.

Great...now this is going to turn into another "Will Smith as Captain America" thread; I'm still getting comments in my email box from that 2 years later.

I don't really care who they get to play Spidey in this because Raimi's vision was epic genius and I'll always wish we could have seen his take on the vulture. If they show the Uncle Ben storyline again I'll be pissed because it's already been done perfectly. What a poor career choice for Webb, and he had so much promise to throw away by selling out to a studio so young. Raimi was great because he wasn't the studio's bitch and did his best to maintain final cut of his films; even if they had to pry it away from his cold dead fingers (which they did when they fired him). This new film will be made by Sony, not Marc Webb.

Logan Lerman can't hold a candle to Jamie Bell. Donald Glover would be... interesting.
Craig on Jun 7, 2010

@32...Lerman is never going to happen because he's chosen a much better role in the new film, The Perks of being a Wallflower. A much better career move for him in a much better film, check it out: https://www.firstshowing.net/2010/05/20/emma-watson-logan-lerman-in-perks-of-being-a-wallflower/

I wish they were just doing a S4 along the lines of the first two, but if they have to go with a new Spiderman, JB is definitely the one to go with because he has the chops and right build

If you ask me bells the best sugestion so far, bt is too early for this, they should be gettin everything else sorted first. Also i really liked maguire untill he done spiderman, he was ok in the first one but in2 and3 u just wanted to slap his ugly little rodent face everytime it was on screen, and I know I'm not the only one. And I'm a big fan of Bells, dnt want this to happen with him.

"remember when we all thought that John Krasinski was the frontrunner for Captain America?" No. Anyone who believed that or indulged the idea was an idiot in the first place.

Sign me up with #25 & #20! I am in full support of Donald Glover for Spidey if we are truy talking about the BEST choice. I do like Jamie Bell and I think he would be Good as Parker but I think Glover would be Great!! Glover's sense of humor, demeanor and physicality perfectly suits that of Peter Parker. I really don't understands people's focus on his color as the "color" of Peter Parker is NOT significant in any way. Nothing about Peter Parker speaks to essentially being white. It amazes me when comic guys show themselves to being just as small minded and ignorant as other folks in the world. Due to what we are fans of...superheroes, graphic novels, fantasy....shouldn't our mindsets be more open, thougtful and insightful?? I guess ignorances knows no bounds!!

#38 I don't think it is about being close minded or racist. I think they are more of traditionalists and to the point every time someone has gone to far off of the comics we normally get a horrible movie. That being said I say give Glover his shot. I say if you are doing a reboot of a good franchise (would have been great except for Spider-Man 3) go balls to the wall. What is there to lose? As long as it isn't Bieber, Carter, Smith (Will's son) or Bow Wow I will probably go see it in theatres. We still have Spider-Man 1 and 2.

As i recall.... "traditionalists" took the thought of a brokeback Mountain, 10 things i hate about you JOKER and laughed it out of the room ...until we all saw it on film. I thought a 6-foot, 2-inch Wolverine, a Tim Burton-directed, Non-Blue & Gray Batman or Johnny Depp as a Pirate would never work in a million years. Most comic adaptations dont translate well to the big screen, So if Glover, Brandon T Jackson, Lautner, or "whom-the-F," ever is the best pic, so be it. 😀
