Casting Tidbits: Scarlett Johansson, Stellan Skarsgard & More

August 5, 2010

Scarlett Johansson, Stellan Skarsgard, Tim Blake Nelson

I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones. You sure you got today's Casting Tidbits? First up, Vulture reports that the lovely Scarlett Johansson is interested in heading to Old St. Louis with director David O. Russell and leading actor / producer Vince Vaughn. It's the story of the of a traveling salesman (Vaughn) who has been an absentee father (Vaughn), and how his life changes when his daughter becomes part of his new life. Johansson will take the role of Vaughn's secretary who accompanies him and his daughter on a cross-country sales trip.

Next, Variety reports Stellan Skarsgard (Good Will Hunting, Angels & Demons) will join the cast of the US adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the first book of The Millennium Trilogy which was already adapted in Sweden. Skarsgard will play Martin Vanger, a principal suspects in the 40-year-old disappearance of a teenage girl. The actor said very simply, "I have met [David] Fincher, I want to work with him, he wants to work me. I have had a concrete offer and now we are in negotiations." It doesn't get more clear than that. Now if only we could get final word on who is playing the protagonist Lisbeth.

Finally, THR reports Tim Blake Nelson (Incredible Hulk, O Brother Where Art Thou, Leaves of Grass) will join John Krasinski, Drew Barrymore and Kristen Bell in the ensemble feel-good film Whales. Based on the true story from the days of The Cold War circa 1988, the film follows a small-town news reporter (Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) who enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. Ken Kwapis (License to Wed, "The Office") will be directing the film, and audiences may become obsessed with whales just like after Free Willy.

Well, that's all for this edition of Casting Tidbits. Be sure to stay tuned for more casting updates on the way.
