Disney Buzz: Pirates 4 Shooting This Summer, Burton's Next?

A couple of buzzworthy stories relating to a few Disney projects to point out today. First up, ComingSoon has a press release from the governor of Hawaii announcing that Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be shooting on the islands of Kaua'i and O'ahu this summer. They don't say when exactly it'll start shooting, only "this summer", but does this mean Disney and Johnny Depp worked things out and are moving ahead as planned? Please don't tell me they're replacing him like Tobey Maguire. No other details were revealed in the press release. Next up: Rumors about Tim Burton's next Disney project.
This next story is only a rumor for now - especially because this is the first time we've heard about it. Harry at Ain't It Cool News says he's "heard" that Tim Burton may be taking on Sleeping Beauty next. But it won't be a straight remake, apparently his semi-live-action version (like Alice on Wonderland) will be told from the point of view of Maleficent, the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil" who curses Princess Aurora to "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die" before the sun sets on her 16th birthday. In fact, it may even be called simply Maleficent. Another crazy Tim Burton half-CGI Disney remake/reboot from the point of view of the evil witch? I'm going to wait until after I see Alice before I make a call on that.
There's also an interesting crossover between these stories. Tim Burton has confirmed numerous times that he will be shooting Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp this year. He either better start shooting in March as soon as Alice in Wonderland is out or they're not going to be able to fit it in this year. Because according to this news today, Pirates 4 is shooting (probably) for most of the second half of 2010. So Dark Shadows will have to shoot before or after. Depp definitely has a full "dance card" and I'm curious to see what happens. Obviously Pirates is moving forward, maybe Dark Shadows is delayed until after this Maleficent project?

Happy to hear about pirates 4!!! Its a series that actually be successful over and over again like Indiana jones, star wars and LOTR But only if it has original cast and crew I have a feeling since Captn Jack Sparrow is lookin for the fountain of youth that at the end Jonny Depp wont be needed to play Jack Sparrow and they can continue the series without him. Anyone else agree that could happen??

#1, i don't like the sound of that at all. this series doesn't need to get "younger" as far as cast ( that sounds like desperation to me). it needs to get better plots and writing. while the original was a classic; the last 2 "pirates" films haven't been very good. it could happen - i just hope it doesn't. by the way - do you have any idea WHO would be your choice to play the younger sparrow? now, what i really wanted to say was this: i'm hoping burton does do his "maleficent" movie - it sounds cool!

I'm such a fan of Disney's movies - and I really love these kind of twists that Burton is trying to give them. Yup! I DO want to see this Maleficient movie...

I'm down for another Pirates. People say the last 2 were bad but Davey Jones, the Kraken and the fight scenes were pretty bad ass IMO. Sure they weren't as good as the first but that's because no one knew what to expect when that one came out. & the only problem i have with the idea of a Maleficient movie is the fact that Helena Bonham Carter is no Maleficient... or Princess Aurora, hell shes not even one of the fairies for that matter. Now i have no problems with Helena its just that she doesn't belong in the world of Sleeping Beauty at all. But you know Burton is going to throw her in. and its going to suck.

A Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp is not a Pirates of the Caribbean. The only reason the first film was such a hit was because of his wonderful character. Folks that normally would never go to see a Disney movie based on a theme park ride went, based on the rave reviews that his performance was getting. can't wait for pirates 4,just hope it will be better than the 1st three.don't get me wrong 1st film was a modern classic the other two had their moments.

I'm all for Pirates movie, as long as they leave Will and Elizabeth outta of it, their story in over and Jack's is just beginning, have Jack and Barbossa, the two bumbling pirates/guards and Jacks crew abd it will be amazing! Maybe even resurrect Zoe Saldana's character Anamaria? Can't go wrong with her!

I just hope "Pirates" becomes more like pirates than all the supernatural mumbo-jumbo. It worked in the 1st movie because most of the movie was realistic in a way, pirates, ships, caribeen ports, etc. THe last two movies with ghosts and fish-men and voodoo just got out of hand. Make it more about pirates and their activies and less pizazz and it will be a hit!
