Through all the problems that Terry Gilliam has had getting his long gestating Don Quixote project off the ground the director has maintained that Johnny Depp would certainly still be a part of the project. But it looks like Pirates of the Caribbean 4 has stopped Depp from joining Gilliam on this misadventure as Empire caught up with Gilliam at the Cannes Film Festival where he revealed that Ewan McGregor has stepped up to take the role once filled by Depp. However, going off the disjointed facts that Robert Duvall mentioned last month, we're not entirely sure of any specifics surrounding McGregor's character in this strange story.
Originally, Depp's character was going to be a 21st century advertising executive who travels back in time to 17th century Spain, where he meets Don Quixote (Duvall) and is mistakenly believed to be Sancho Panza, thus becoming involved in adventures with him. But Duvall has said that the story has changed to involve a shoemaker who is hired to play Don Quixote in a commercial, but then starts to believe that he's really Don Quixote. Duvall was thoroughly confused, and it seems Empire is too since they're still operating under the assumption of the original time traveling storyline. Of course with Terry Gilliam, anything is possible, so I think we're going to have to wait for some sort of official statement before we really have a grasp on this.
As for Gilliam, he's currently in Cannes to fill in the "last gaps [of] financing" for Don Quixote, according to Anne Thompson. Gilliam was in Cannes last year for the premiere of his latest film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, which hit DVD in the US a few weeks ago. I'm glad to see another talented actor like McGregor joining this and I hope we see Gilliam finally get financing together soon. We'll definitely keep you updated!

weird casting choice, knowing that Gilliam envisioned Depp in the role before. Very different type of actors.

Ewan is a great actor, I like this news. Now, if we could just hear that he is going to be John Constatine: Hellblazer. My day would be made!

I hope this turns out good, that Doctor Parnassus crap ruined my taste for Gilliam and tarnished Ledger's rising career. That being said I do have hope for this

Gilliam sucks he contributed to Heath's passing. Those cold outdoor conditions were horrible. The man was always sick and could not sleep. I know that will anger most, but its the truth.

@7, Heath was a grown man...he had the opportunity to get antibiotics and he refused...yes Gilliam put him in these terrible conditions but Heath played a part in it too.

Wow. Depp and Mcgregor may really seem to be different type of actors. But still, for me, they both have the talent to play the role. Ewan is a great actor. I would be very glad if he'll be the one to replace Depp. ^^
