Fairy Tale Characters Headed to Theaters in a 'Legends' Movie

Legends

With the ensemble superhero feature The Avengers on the somewhat distant horizon, it looks like the comic book adaptation may have already started a new trend with teams of familiar characters joining forces for a feature film. We've already heard about one upcoming project - DreamWorks' adaptation of The Guardians, a story that has an assembly of imaginary icons like Jack Frost and the Easter Bunny protecting kids from the forces of evil. Now Heat Vision reports another similar project is being put together in Legends, which pits together characters like Red Riding Hood, Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel & Gretel in a dark fantasy.

Having already been sold on the concept of The Guardians, I have to say this Legends project sounds just as intriguing and has plenty of potential to be something truly original and enjoyable, despite its combination of classic characters. The story, based on Nick Percival's graphic novel of the same name, begins when the remains of Pinocchio are discovered. Red Hood, now a noted wolf hunter, and Jack partner to discover who is murdering the creatures of folklore. Along the way, they're assisted by characters such as Goldilocks, re-imagined as a mercenary, and Hansel & Gretel, now psychic exterminators. Yeah this sounds pretty killer.

However, no writer has been hired to adapt the graphic novel, and the project is not set up with any studio yet. But with heavy hitters Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing through Imagine Entertainment, this shouldn't have a problem finding distribution or an audience. It'll be interesting to see if this assembly of characters from various literary/cinematic universes becomes a trend like comic book movies. Along with The Guardians, there's also I, Frankenstein, which re-imagines classic movie monsters in a noir detective story. As long as they keep putting these characters into unique settings and stories, then I'm all about it.

Interesting how Radical keeps announcing these movies but none actually get made. Barry Levine is a great salesman.

This sounds like Fables by Bill Willingham. besides a few minor changes. Too bad Fables has been ongoing for 6 yrs. and this has yet to be released. Both sound good but I have read Fables so I'm biased.
