Guillermo del Toro Behind Another New 'Van Helsing' Movie

Guillermo del Toro

Well, this is interesting. Pajiba is reporting that Universal Pictures is developing another Van Helsing movie - that Guillermo del Toro wrote a treatment for is and is developing at his production company. Whoa! I think it's safe to assume that this is not the reason why he left The Hobbit, but it is an interesting development nonetheless. I trust Pajiba, as they haven't missed a story in a long time, but this just seems like a new development in the "Hollywood cog" (as they say), not necessarily GdT's next big project that got him off Hobbit. I guess the good news is that this is not a remake of that 2004 atrocity with Hugh Jackman.

Apparently this Van Helsing is based on the "same fictional vampire hunter character from Bram Stoker's Dracula." So it's presumably a dark and fantastic take on the Van Helsing character and is being described as an "action horror story." This is around 50th film in the last year related to Dracula that has been put in development. Anyway, Pajiba says that "del Toro productions" is producing and that del Toro only wrote the treatment, so I presume he'll find a writer to work on the screenplay until it's ready. This does sounds interesting, but I'm more interested in finding out what del Toro will be directing next instead. Stay tuned!

I'm always up for action/horror movies. But I had high hopes he'd discover and make a movie based on the FEAR video games. Alma was scary as F*** and Del Torro would really give it great atmosphere.

I'm down for the original cast to come back, minus the dude who played Dracula. Del Toro should be able to bring us a well thougt out Van Hesling film.

I didn't dislike the '04 Van Helsing, but it could have been so much better. Hopefully this version won't disappoint.

Yes. That would be cool if they gave Jackman the part again.

I'd much rather have him focus on the At The Mountains of Madness movie like he's been hinting at.

yea, i enjoyed the first van hellsing, i think they tried to cram a tremendous amount of story and creatures into 1 film... which wsa probably why alot of people got lost... but i enjoyed the effects and hugh jackman. Hugh Jackman should reprise his role!

I agree with number 10, and to everyone saying that Helsing was good do you remember the carriages exploding like they were cars and what a pussy Frankenstein was? ...That really was not a good movie so I wish someone would elaborate as to what they liked about it. They took a classic gritty tale and turned it into a Summer blockbuster action movie that felt more sci-fi then period adventure. Check out Soloman Kane if you want to see how to do a movie like Van Helsing the right way.

This dude has been in focus for 4 years now, yet the only thing he made that is worth seing since then is Pan's Labyrinth. He was attached to this, attached to that but it all ran out in the sand.

i liked the first van helsing. what i thought kept if from being amazing was the story - i felt it fell apart during the second half of the movie.......but with all the great looking creatures in the flick - it was fun watch.

I think the 04 version of Van Helsing was okay. it wasn't good (quite entertaining though, very nice costumes), but it wasn't as bad as all the transformers shit michael bay shat on earth! As for the actors, I rather liked Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing. The main roles were well cast except ofc for Dracula who was one whiny son of a bitch. (on the other hand, he did have some kind of crippled sperm) I'm rly looking forward to this reboot and with GdT attached at least you know they are gonna put some serious effort in it!

VH was ok...but Kate was in it so it gets a positive from me....but it had monsters, and most of us love monsters. I will see what ever Del Toro has anything to do with.

While I enjoyed the first Van Helsing, it wasn't at all what I wanted. I was hoping for more of a Hammer Dracula kind of Van Helsing hunting vampires and beasties... not an Indiana Jones rip off with a comedy relief sidekick.

I LOVED THE FIRST VH MOVIE DUDE!!!!!!!!! The story was cool cuz i like sad yet happy endings. i like how the first few minutes of the movie was black and white like the original monster movies. i thought kate was hot and jackman was cool yet kinda gritty. i loved the costumes dude. what really stands out is draculas appearance. He had cool long hair not short stupid hair. and i liked his black outift instead of his original one. not to be mean but the original one gets old. i really hope they make a sequal and bring back jackman. BRING BACK JACKMAN

Personally, I LOVED the 04 Van Helsing movie. I can see why most wouldn't like it--it is a 'leave your brain at the door' action flick, but it was a lot of fun. It was a nice homage to the old black and white films we all enjoy, but it had its own character. I loved Richard Roxburgh as Dracula. Some people may feel otherwise, but I think he did a good job... Aside from that one bit where he jumped up from his coffin like a ballerina (seriously, wtf?). I think I liked his version of Dracula because it wasn't like Lugosi's (while I respect it, it's too card-board cut-out for my taste) and it brought something new to the table. It reminded me of the Dracula from the history books, but not overly done. Frankenstein was a little wimpy, I'll admit. Didn't care for him too much. Didn't like Anna either. Nope, the characters Van Helsing and Dracula were what really made me like the movie. Then again, I am more of a character-driven type of person when it comes to movies and stories in general, so I may be biased. Anyway, that being said, I'm excited for this new movie. That is, if it even is produced. I can see that it probably will have very little to do with the original, and most likely will not be a sequel, but it's something to look forward to. I love anything and all that has to do with Dracula, so I'll deffinitely bite. 🙂
