Hayley Atwell Cast as Captain America's WWII Love Interest

Marvel has officially announced (no more rumors!) that British actress Hayley Atwell (seen above) has been cast as Peggy Carter in Marvel's Captain America: The First Avenger (notice the new title, too?). Deadline has posted the press release, which doesn't reveal a single bit of new information besides Atwell's casting. The 28 year old actress beat out other British talent like Keira Knightley, Alice Eve, and Emily Blunt (mentioned here) for the breakout role. In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while fighting together during the war. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Read on!
Although Atwell has been in films like Cassandra's Dream, Brideshead Revisited, and The Duchess, this is the first time I've heard of her, so I don't have much to say. I'm glad to see that Joe Johnston is finalizing his cast for this film. Besides Chris Evans as Cap, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, and Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, we haven't heard about any other casting. I wonder how many other roles are left to fill? Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe which is when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

I keep hoping that they get a better Director but I guess it's too late. Johnston is a hack every film he gets his hands on turns out bad Cap deserves better. I'm fine with the cast but I just can't feel good about this film with him at the helm, at least they got Whedon for The Avengers so not everything is doom and gloom.

The Rocketeer is a great movie by Johnston, and one in a very similar vein to Captain America. Now imagine what Johnston can do without the restraints put on him by Disney on The Rocketeer, and this could be a kick-ass period to modern day adventure/super-hero movie.

To tell you the truth, i probably won't even watch this....and I haven't even seen any footage yet! lol!! No, it's too late now. They got a bad director. Fresh off the bad bad bad Wolfman, he's gotten the keys to Captain America. Chris Evans? as a lead? no..... fuck this chick too. she looks boring

Doesn't matter anyway, won't be watching it. I hate when they post , she beat out so and so. Blunt took her name out of the role, and Knightley didn't even comment on it. She always said she didn't want to do another blockbuster after Pirates, so those 2 were out of contention.

I think Chris Evans is one lucky bastard. As sympathy for taking him off the rom com w/ Anna Faris (hottt) they offered him Alice Eve or this lass. BOTH beauties in my opinion. And to answer your questions, yes having seen Sunshine I'd say he's certainly capable of portraying more depth than his roles to date have allowed. In any case, however, it will pretty much rest on Evans to bring Steve Rogers to life. No small feat, imho. Maybe Joe Johnston can pit him against a T Rex or something. I guess Hugo Weaving's the next best thing. ;D

Jeez lot of hate for this, warranted I guess...well being the optimist that I am, I'm still on board and this is a good casting move. Just make it a good WWII setting and not some half assed one. I'm mostly worried about Johnston, he no backbone while directing Wolfman, he let the studio take control and we all know how that turned out.

@ DoomCanoe: Let's just say you will be too busy starring at something else to look at her face 😉

I doubt she beat out Emily Blunt, Keira Knightley and others. I think it's more like they settled on her. I could care less who they get for the role. I'm more worried about the story and seeing how Chris Evans pulls off the role.

why does everyone keep referring to Evans in Sunshine...the movie has more depth, but he plays his character with the same superficiality he has all his roles ...dont confuse the movie with the part

It will not matter who plays the love interest if the script is bad.
