Sucker Punch

"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything." Just after this year's Comic-Con, you were given a shorter, teaser-size look at the footage for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch that was on display for audiences in Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center. Needless to say, the action looked spectacularly epic with plenty of beautiful ladies firing machine guns and fighting samurai, robots and dragons. Though there was plenty of eye candy to marvel at the first time around, a brand new full-length trailer has just debuted which finally gives us a better idea of what kind of epic story Snyder is sending our way on top of amazing action.

Watch the second official trailer for Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch from WB:

You can also watch the new Sucker Punch trailer in High Definition on Apple

Sucker Punch is Zack Snyder's first movie not based on previous material, but an original idea that he came up with and turned into a screenplay with co-writer Steve Shibuya. Set in the 1950's, Sucker Punch follows Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man. Warner Brothers is bringing Sucker Punch to theaters on March 25th, 2011 next year. Thoughts?

Looks pretty great. But christ, I can NEVER get into these little pretty girls doing all this crazy bombastic shit. This looks like "Sexy Video Game: The Movie" to me. Pure fantasy. Kind of annoying really. Get ready for the girls to have something to talk about. And seriously, for those who say "just sit back and enjoy the mindless entertainment"... How many years will you be saying that to yourself every time you watch a movie, eh? Right. Well at some point you gotta get out of the sandbox.

Cracky on Nov 3, 2010

18

#18 Shut the fuck up. You act as if people who enjoy movies for mindless fun are forced to only watch those types of movies. I enjoy mindless action as much as the next guy, but it doesn't mean that every single movie I watch has to be of the same genre. You're the type of person that goes around preaching about how immature everyone is, to make up for the fact that you're insecure about yourself, and to hide that you're just some turd that puts himself up on his own pedestal. Cause no one else will.

danielvutran on Nov 3, 2010

Why does the price of IMAX and 3D keep going up in internet comments? At first it was like $12 or so, now it's almost up to $20. I dunno what prices are like around your parts, but here in real town USA the average movie ticket is about $8.50, 3D screens at a normal theater are like $12. Anyway, I have no problem with fun movies like this. I'll probably see it just to see how the hell they manage to tie that much crazy shit together. If it turns out to be a horribly shite film, then it'll give me a chance to pick it apart and bitch about how stupid it is. If it's good, then it'll be fun to watch. Either way I win. I saw Avatar twice and while I can freely admit that the film has it's issues, it's still a fun watch on occasion. Same with crap like The Rock or Stargate or The Fifth Element (though that movie is of the 'so bad it's good' ilk as far as I'm concerned...) I don't really give a shit if other people like or hate a movie. Different people will like or hate different films. I love introspective character studies as much as the next film nerd, but you can't just sit around watching Taxi Driver and Hana-Bi all the time. Sometimes you gotta pop in something goofy, grab some popcorn and watch shit blow up real good. Transformers 2 is still among the worst films of the decade, tho 😛

Geezus christ on a pogo stick! Where did all these 9 year olds come from? Scott Glenn has been in The Right Stuff, The Hunt For Red October, Silence of the Lambs, Backdraft and about 100 other movies and he is referred to repeatedly in these comments as 'that old guy'. What does he have to do to impress you little dimwits? Appear in a Justin Bieber video?

Leroy Skibone on Nov 3, 2010

24

When Scott Glenn was talking I kept wondering if he was suppose to be Yoda or something. I didn't really like how he delivered his lines. However this is the first trailer, we'll see how I feel after the second one, or something.

25

i have to say that that wasnt as good as i expected it to be. one of the only things that i liked about it other that the fact that it is filled with hot women is that they used led zeppelins song.

Nick on Nov 3, 2010

26

Ethan, you can stop with the hyperbole in your posts anytime. Save descriptors like "incredible" and "amazing" for times when they might be more applicable. This looks like a possibly entertaining film from Snyder, but there's no actual new ground being broken. Let's get a grip, shall we?

GrenadeDodger on Nov 3, 2010

27

lmao this looks so stupid, a movie for rebelious teenage girls at best.

Andrew K on Nov 3, 2010

dreckent on Nov 3, 2010

30

Scott Glen is a great actor but unfortunately, poor performances or line delivery are the fault of the director. And let's face it even the greatest actors sometimes have to take jobs just to pay the bills. As far as the visuals are concerned in this trailer? In my humble opinion, these over processed visual extravaganzas are becoming a bit tiresome. Even if it is supposed to be taking place in the girl's head. I find it difficult to believe that anyone would imagine everything in such an over processed bluish monochromatic tint. Let's get back to good old fashioned in camera cinematography. Where when a cinematographer wins an award for cinematography that wasn't touched up in post with a heavy handed digital intermediate.

Shadowman25 on Nov 3, 2010

he just needs to trim the slow-mo.his past movies had incredible trailers, but the movies themselves were mediocre at best.

33

@ #27, GrenadeDodger, I'll have my opinions and choose which adjectives I would like to use, and I'm pretty sure you can do the same. Let's not act holier than thou in the middle of an Internet comment stream about a fantasy action film, shall we?

Ethan Anderton on Nov 3, 2010

Who wants to bet once she acquires all items, she's free in fantasyland, but lobotomized in reality? Ugh

Lois on Nov 3, 2010

35

... I'm sorry, what? Something about Alice in Wonderland with guns and a dragon? No thanks. #24, yeah. I'm amazed how many of these people don't seem to know who Scott Glenn is.. But at the same time, his delivery doesn't match up well with what is going on on screen.

Mark on Nov 3, 2010

36

@23 It's called "cost of living". Out here a gallon of milk is 6 bucks, and all those cute commercials for $1 burgers and tacos at BK/McD/Taco Bell... $1.50 here, which is actually a reasonable markup compared to the $2.99 I was charged at Arby's for that 99-cent BBQ Jr Roast Beef a few years ago. My argument (and those of the intelligent movie goers) is that relative cost of tickets has gone up TOO MUCH each year. It's $11 for a regular ticket, $6.50 for a large soda, $5 for IMAX, and $4 for 3D. We just got a digital (FAKE) IMAX screen in March of 09, where it was $9.50 for the ticket, $5.75 for the soda, $4 for IMAX, and $3 for 3D. A good $1 for each item. Prior to that 3D was a steady $2.50 and there was no IMAX, but the ticket and soda has gone up about $.75 to $1 annually. So yes a $12 3D movie about 3 years ago is now a legitimate $20. It's not our fault companies put $200 into a blockbuster movie (only to make 3/4 of a Billion Dollars), so that we have to pay $11 bucks for every movie out there. Jackass 3D was $15 bucks, and that movie only cost $20 million to make. What I'd like to see is Hollywood take responsiblity and start charging on a scale similar to video games. Where as major/AAA titles cost $60 (US), medium and independent games are priced $40-50, and easily make up the price difference in higher sales (especially without the brand recognition)

Loved Watchmen thought that one was almost perfect in it`s genre. This trailer does not look as good as the teaser and I am wondering what the hell Scott Glen is doing, he just felt wrong in the trailer but hopefully it`s the trailer, I always liked him. I will check this out, who hasn`t seen a really good/cool trailer just to get pissed of when you saw the movie and thought what a load of crap it was and vice versa.

Snyder definitely took a page out of Kazuaki Kiriya directing book but! unlike Kiriya work, this looks fun and dumb while his movies are artistic, Oscar worthy masterpieces i mean come on! Goemon? Cashern? Taboo? all GODLY films in style, story. well i guess im to quick to judge, HOPEFULLY this movie ends up as good as his.

Jesus Christ. It's only here where you'll find people actually hating on something that actually looks pretty good. Then again, all you really need is Zack Snyder's name attached to anything and people will start bitching. I'm all for intellectual stimulating films, but sometimes if a film only wants to be that "badass genre film," then I don't see anything wrong with it.

I talk about it on my blog here but mainly I love the trailer. It's full of awesome visuals and hot chicks kicking ass. And I'm in love with Jena Malone. But I have to agree the old guy is kinda bad and his whole speech about the quest makes it come off as very cliche. But I still am looking very forward to it.

55

I love Zack Snyder's work and style that he brings to films but this one just doesn't do it for me. Also the fact that all of the girls look like preteens dressed like hardcore sluts kind of bothers me. People want to yell and complain about creepy men abducting their daughters...then try to do something about the suggestive material in films and also don't let your preteen daughters dress like hookers 😉 I know I am preaching but I just woke up and am a cranky butt. I will pass on this film but I am excited about Superman so that should be interesting to watch when it is done.

Maxx on Nov 4, 2010

56

Even though I've been watching movies for decades, I must be missing something. I thought the trailer was great. The music, the editing, Carla Gugino, Scott Glenn. Loving me some babes fighting dragons! But so many here think it sucked....oh, well. Must have lost my mind somewhere along the way.. Someone should make a movie called "Samurai Preteen Sluts", however.

#47, what is your problem? O..O

Kenny on Nov 4, 2010

58

I thought the trailer was pretty damn good and I'm definitely going to be seeing this movie. Also, I agree with #15. There's something to be said about going to a movie theater, sitting back and just having fun. Not every movie needs to be some transcendent piece of art to be a good movie. Sometimes some good action and visuals are exactly what the doctor ordered. Did the dialogue sound kind of cheesy? Absolutely. But this looks like the kind of stylized action that Snyder is becoming known for in his movies and that makes for one entertaining flick.

The artsy assholes get to throw grenades and the fun-loving Bay movie fans get to defend themselves and this film. Its a good day to be part of this shit. I will say that I do not like female action stars. Let alone 8 or 9 of them with swords and guns. This is why I don't think much of this. Respectfully, this trailer is gorgeous but I think it's just a big sexy Spice World 2. Replace the little girls with some cult favorite actors. Quentin Tarantino's The Expendables. That is all. Didn't mean to offend ya, #19.

Okay, so the action and cinematography look great and everything but man o' man did that dialouge just ruin the whole trailer!! Every word that guy said just sounded awful, that role definitely needed better casting....more along the lines of Liam Neeson or Gary Oldman.

I guess I'm turning into an old fart. This just looks boring to me. Hot chicks with swords and guns and planes. Once upon a time, maybe, but not now. Of course, Zack Snyder isn't exactly my guy. I thought Watchmen sucked, except for the visuals - it looked awesome - but I need acting and story, which that movie didn't have. I didn't really like Miller's 300 comic, so I never saw the movie. I'll probably end up seeing this (and 300) at some point, but I'm just not interested now.

92

"Alice in Wonderland with machine guns"? Spare me. I love movies with lead heroines as much as anyone, but this looks like one big celluloid migraine. The trailer was pretty weak, and that's after watching it with the sound off (had iTunes on at the time). Guess the filmmakers didn't get the hint that totally drowning your movie in CGI sauce is a major turnoff. (Just ask the folks behind the '08 bomb that was Speed Racer.) Lastly, it's also a red flag when the city AND state appear on a sign outside a mental facility ("Brattleboro, Vermont" at 0:30) for some unknown reason. When does that ever happen?

I liked the original little trailer better; the music fit more. The way they cut this one together, it looks like an interesting story, but the music is what really froze my blood in the first one. By the way, this lead character -who played in Lemony Snickets as the teenage girl- is entirely too lovely and sexy for words.

Nope, this looks like a highly stylized (good) yet ridiculous (bad) implausible action flick for chicks. Seriously, what's the draw for a guy to see a bunch of cute size 4's with names like "Baby Doll" trying to wield guns that are bigger than them without it being an "adult" film ?! This has disappointment written all over it which undoubtedly is why it's showing in March instead of during blockbuster Summer.
