James Franco & Anne Hathaway Hosting 83rd Academy Awards!

Word of an offer came out of the woodwork last night, but now it's official. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today, via press release, that actors James Franco (127 Hours) and Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs) will be hosting the 83rd Academy Awards ceremony on February 27th, 2011. The move to younger talent surely comes as an effort to get a younger demographic to watch the awards telecast which has been falling in ratings for years. Though Hathaway and Franco have appeared prominently in previous ceremonies, this will obviously mark the first time either has hosted the big event.
Previously Hathaway showed off her vocal talents in a musical number with ceremony host Hugh Jackman (amongst other presenting appearances). Franco has only appeared at the awards once previously in the form of a hilarious pre-taped sketch featuring his character from Pineapple Express chilling out with co-star Seth Rogen (also in character) and famed cinematographer Janusz Kaminski. Oscar telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer are very pleased to have both talents aboard saying, "James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27.”
Surely the telecast will use Hathaway's musical talents at some point and Franco's comedic sensibilities also help, but the two have appeared in a variety of films from the action of Spider-Man to the family comedy of The Princess Diaries, so anything is possible. The other interesting aspect lies in the fact that Franco has a good chance to be nominated for Best Actor from his performance in 127 Hours and Hathaway is somewhat in the running for a Best Actress nod for Love and Other Drugs. Unless I'm mistaken, no host has simultaneously been nominated at the very ceremony they are hosting, so that's some sort of added bonus. I guess we'll find out when the Oscars air on ABC on February 27, 2011. What do you think of all this?

interesting choice. its nice to see young hollywood stars taking the reigns and a male/female duo can be a nice addition to the show.

I don't know how I feel about this. If they want a younger demographic, maybe they should have chosen Conan. Then again, I am not sure what channel this is airing on.

I really don't understand the appeal, of either of these choices. James Franco is a boring actor which will likely lead to him being a boring host. Anne Hathaway is barely passable as eye candy; and she is, also, a boring actor. Boring+boring will result in awkward, witless banter; and will leave everybody wishing they had just let James Earl Jones read off a list, of all the winners rather than bother with what will end up being an Oscar equivalent of an Ambien pill.

Although, it would have been awesome if they could have had Leslie Nielsen host as Frank Briffin playing Phil Donahue(like Naked Gun 33 1/3) Now that would be amazing television. RIP!

Well this is even more reason to watch the show, not that we really needed another...

They'll be ok. But to be the host of the Oscars you should be more than simply an actor or comic but an overall entertainer. Oh for the days of Chris Rock, Billy Crystal & Jon Stewart.

Dave Lister J.M.C., you sound like a miserable hater with a very lonely life. Why don't you judge after the ceremony ends ( or at least during the Oscars).

To all of the above commentors. Blogs could be much much better to go through in the event you can maintain Your feedback simple and also to the level. No-one likes to go through large feedback once the idea might be conveyed making use of a not as lengthy comment
