James McAvoy Will Play Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class!

James McAvoy / Patrick Stewart

Fascinating. Heat Vision reports that James McAvoy has signed on to play a young Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, in Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class prequel. They definitely were trying to get this into production right away! This also probably means that those rumors about McAvoy playing Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit turned out false, or at least Guillermo del Toro didn't pick him. Although, considering Hobbit doesn't have a greenlight yet, it may still be a possibility… Anyway, they don't say whether or not McAvoy will be bald like Patrick Stewart was in the Bryan Singer X-Men's - so that question remains unanswered.

First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (a few new ones), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men." Oooh! McAvoy last appeared in The Last Station and Wanted and recently finished shooting Robert Redford's The Conspirator.

We're still waiting to hear who else Vaughn will cast as younger versions of most of the mutants we've come to know and love. We also still don't know exactly which other characters will show up - besides Xavier and Lensherr. Either way, we're already anxiously awaiting to find out who Vaughn will cast next - so stay tuned!

That would be great. I think he'd do a great job. Though... he's gotta nail the voice in some fashion.

#5 #7.. Fox has the x-men movie rights at the moment, Disney/Marvel has most of the avengers, so no they won't be blending

Woah sir! There is only one person that can play the prof. James Mcavoy is a fantastic actor, but Patrick Stewart is Xavier. No room for argument.

Agreeing with Risk! I love James McAvoy, he's very talented...but as Xavier? I don't know. It's a little too weird for me.

Eh. I'm not excited in the least. Wasn't fond of this movie to begin with.

Cool casting but if Prof X is as young as McAvoy that will mean the actual X-Men ie Cyclops, Jean Grey etc wil have to be 15 or 16 max to make it work!

Yeah, how is he going to emulate Stewart's voice?

"meh..." IMO if they go the "new actor route" they should give this movie its own continuity... We've seen young Prof X, portrayed TWICE by Stewart and it would look pretty weak to have an all new take with summers & grey given what he BLATANTLY looked like when he took them both in.

I like James McAvoy. Anyone see the Last King of Scotland? Dam, that dudes hung!! #14.... Shut up. Are you in the business? You a Director? Writer? Producer? Lesbian? No? Well there's a reason for that. And yes ladies and gentlemen I am the real Alec Baldwing!! Thank you all so very much.

So since they essentially killed all that great characters in the last movie they are going to go back to the past. I have to say that I'm so tired of that kind of movie plot.

I vote for Terry O'Quinn as the next and future Charles Xavier. He looks the part, and he's even got the wheelchair practice in.

@15 I'm not in the business, I just make a lot of money, f*ck hot chicks and watch movies. Based on your comments I can clearly see you "like" James McAveroy... Take your pointless Diarrhea of mind elsewhere. You wanna trade insults go find a chat room. Sperm Burper.
