Moriarty / Jared Harris

Even though rumors about the ending of Guy Ritchie's unique take on Sherlock Holmes circled around a Brad Pitt cameo as the infamous detective's nemesis Professor Moriarty. While the signature villain did make an appearance at the end of the first film, Pitt was nowhere to be seen, but neither was the character's face as we only caught a glimpse of his hand and silhouette with an unknown actor providing his voice. Now Latino Review has a big scoop on who will step into the villain's shoes for the sequel. Though it's not a big name, unless something goes amiss, Jared Harris ("Mad Men") is said to take the pivotal role.

Moriarty is a criminal mastermind, described by Holmes as the "Napoleon of Crime," and since Harris has shown an amazingly subtle but powerful presence as an intimidating executive on "Mad Men," this is right up his alley. In addition to his work on "Mad Men," Harris has also had supporting roles in films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Igby Goes Down and Lost in Space. The actor is also son to the late great Richard Harris, so talent just runs in his blood, I suppose. Latino Review says this is pretty much a sure thing "barring any unforeseen circumstances or the deal falling apart at the last minute," so with this news getting out, hopefully we'll have official confirmation soon enough. What do you guys think?

Update: Warner Bros. has confirmed Jared Harris is Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes 2.

It could definitely work, although I'd be intrigued to see Pitt in the role!

You know I would love to see Pitt as Moriarty...but if Ritchie wants Harris then I'll stand behind him.

ive watched harris for years now on most of the stuff hes been involved in. i reckon hes a great actor and thankfully due to madmen he is getting a bigger audience, to tell the truth i dont want pitt, it would be odd, id happily watch harris do it since i believe he is one of the most fantastic "little known" actors today

I think Harris can take it and go with it, Even if Guy Richie is an iffy director

I think he's much more fitting for the role than Brad Pitt. Good choice.
