Joe Dante Debunks Those Silly Gremlins 3-D Sequel Rumors

Back in January we got the somewhat unsettling rumor that there may very well be a Gremlins sequel on the way taking advantage of the 3-D craze taking over the film industry. However, since that rumor came from the consistently unreliable MarketSaw, we took it with a huge grain of salt. And now it looks like that reputation has only been reaffirmed as Empire caught up with series director Joe Dante who said any talk of a Gremlins sequel in 3-D were blown out of proportion thanks to the wonder of the internet. However, the director does elaborate, almost cautiously, that a remake or reboot of the horror comedy might still be likely.
While being honored at Cine-Excess IV (what an odd name), a conference of global cult film traditions in London, Dante responded to Empire's questions about a Gremlins sequel, and here's what he had to say:
"It’s been heavily booted around on the internet that there is a 'Gremlins 3' and then somebody said ‘Gremlins 3? Gremlins 3-D! I bet it’s a sequel in 3-D and I bet they’re gonna ask Joe to do it!” Well the answer is no, no and no. I’m sure it’ll happen. It’s too valuable a title to not get the remake treatment. I think it will be a remake rather than a sequel. I think they’ll start over and do a remake or a sequel."
So there you have it. It seems the only 3-D involving Joe Dante that we can expect in the near future is The Hole 3D (watch the new trailer right here). Anyway, after the poor performance of Gremlins 2: The New Batch, not to mention the fact that Dante's most recent films are Looney Tunes: Back in Action and Small Soldiers, Dante likely wouldn't be asked to direct a Gremlins sequel/reboot anyway (but you never know?). It's probably for the best since there's enough unnecessary sequels and remakes currently in the works right now anyway without ruining one of the more iconic horror comedies of the 80's. Anybody else relieved?

We will see who is right and who isn't. All Dante confirmed is that he has not been approached. Are you saying he owns the rights to the franchise? Interesting. Regardless, thanks for taking a swipe at my site. Appreciate it.

Gremlins vs Critters would be a good sequel for both Gremlin and Critter fans and beside who wouldnt want to see those two fight

If Dante's not involved then I don't think there should be a remake, although if he was then I wouldn't overly object because he knew what he was doing with those little puppets.

Small Soldiers was an AWESOME movie. I don't care what anybody says. That ranks up there with Deep Blue Sea for me on my list of guilty pleasure movies. I would love to see a Gremlins SEQUEL. Not a remake, and if they use CG for the Gremlins.. i'm out. Need to keep puppetry alive. Gremlins was so perfect you can't remake it, I don't wanna see Jaden Smith going to his new asian old man and getting a awesome pet that he feeds after midnight! NONONO.

I don't wonna see no remake of nothing. they need too live the movie how it is and get a life. if they are going too remake it I'm not seeing it at all.now if there is a part 3 I will see it more Then one time ...in the movies but if not o will.

A sequel would be awesome but some remakes are good just to see an older concept modernizes but a remake of this movie would have to be more of a horror and be bigger and better which i dont think will be possible to out do its original..... so sequel

I LOVED LOVED LOVED GREMLINS AND GREMLINS NEW BATCH AND I LOVE DANTE I PROBABLY WOULDNT WATCH IT IF ANYONE ELSE DID IT I REALLY THINK SEQUEL WOULD BE BETTER THAN REMAKE U CANT GET ANY BETTER THAN THE FIRST TIME I AGREE WITH HEDGEHOG UP THERE LEAVE STUFF ALONE WE DONT WANT TO SEE THESE RICH ACTORS KIDS IN THESE MOVIES SCREWING UP WHAT WAS PERFECT THE FIRST TIME

I always though I had a cool idea for a Gremlins 3. A mean mogwai/or gremlin (there always is one) force-feeds gizmo after midnight and Gizmo turns into a gremlin, Billy keeps Gizmo quarantined while they try and discover an antidote that turns gremlins back into mogwais. I think it's an interesting premise that could be developed into a full length movie haha

what if in the lab in part two a gremlin was created that wasnt effected by the sun = new sequel concept i think so
