Judd Apatow Producing Wedding Comedy from Kristen Wiig
by Ethan Anderton
February 17, 2010
It's hard to believe that it has been a decade since Judd Apatow and producer Paul Feig brought us the NBC series "Freaks and Geeks." It was a series ahead of its time not only in content, but in talent, as it launched the careers of Seth Rogen and Jason Segel before they became the comedy giants they are today. Now THR says Feig and Apatow are teaming up again to produce an untitled wedding-themed comedy starring Kristen Wiig (Whip It, Extract) in the story of two women battling to plan their friend's wedding. I would compare this to Bride Wars, but the involvement of Feig, Apatow and Wiig calms my snark gland.
Wiig (who first made a name for herself on "Saturday Night Live") also co-wrote the screenplay with Annie Mumolo, an up-and-coming comedy writer, and both are co-producing this as well. Like I've said before, keep the female-driven comedies coming. There's plenty of male, man-child driven comedy out there and I'd really like to see the wide breadth of female comedic talent get their due diligence with some big screen hits. Of course, the wedding comedy is a bit of a female cliche, but I think this combination of comedic talent can liven things up a bit. We'll keep you updated on the development of this new comedy project, so stay tuned!
