Michael Giacchino

I've made it no secret that one of my favorite composers is Michael Giacchino, and if you haven't seen Let Me In, his work in that some of the best this year. He's one of the few composers where it's exciting to hear when he gets involved with an upcoming project. We know he' is scoring Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars, due out in 2012, but he's got quite a few other projects on his slate. Found in a Variety profile on the composer (via SlashFilm) is confirmation that he's also set to score Pixar's Cars 2, J.J. Abrams' Super 8, and Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible IV. And I can bet he is getting another Oscar nom next year, too.

"I gravitate towards things that get me excited," Giacchino explains, "something I can feel creative about. That could either be the story or the person that's making it. It's very hard for me to write something when I don't feel anything. J.J. could call me up and say, 'I'm directing a paper towel commercial' and I would say yes, because it's going to be an awesome paper towel commercial." All four of those upcoming movies that Giacchino is scoring I'm already excited for, but this makes it even better! "Michael is more like an actor in the sense that he takes on a different character with every movie," Brad Bird says. "He's very much of the mindset that each movie should have its own sound." I already can't wait to hear what he comes up with.

We've been trying to get an interview with Giacchino for a while, and just barely missed him when he was in Austin for Fantastic Fest with Let Me In, but I'm hoping at some point in the next few months I'll be able to finally chat with one of my favorite composers. In the meantime, I'll be loading his scores for Up, Star Trek and Let Me In on my iPod to listen to all day and night. And, of course, we'll continue to keep you updated on Cars 2, Super 8 and Mission: Impossible IV, all of which are due to hit theaters at some point in 2011.
