Natalie Portman Developing Stoner Comedy Titled 'Best Buds'

If you didn't know, Natalie Portman started a production company called Handsomecharlie Films a few years ago to develop projects that better "suited her tastes." One of their first films, Hesher, just premiered at Sundance. Pajiba reports that Portman is now developing a stoner comedy at Handsomecharlie called Best Buds. She will produce and star in the project that's said to be in the same vein as Harold & Kumar and Half-Baked. The story centers on two best female friends who take a road trip to their friend's wedding in order to save her by bringing her weed. I've already heard more than enough about this, I'm totally in.
The script for Best Buds was apparently written by Jamie Denbo, who wrote and starred in the Showtime pilot "Ronna & Beverly." Pajiba says this will probably be Portman's next project after she finishes Thor and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which Handsomecharlie is also producing. I agree with Pajiba's Dustin Rowles about this: "it [will] be nice to see a female-driven stoner comedy, for a change." I guess we don't see that too often which is why this already sounds so good. I'm loving everything about this so far. I'm a sucker for stoner comedies and I love Natalie Portman. Can't wait for this one to get going. But who will direct?

Uh ""it [will] be nice to see a female-driven stoner comedy, for a change." what about Smiley Face (2007) w/Anna Feris, that was female driven stoner comedy.

Sounds very lame. She should stick to acting.

You obviously don't 'get it' then. I'm really hoping Faris is in this. She set the PERFECT example and broke the mold. She deserves the credit, though as per usual, the public will eat this up because portmans more well known. Smiley Face was D BOMB and Faris deserves all the credit in the world, and funny part is, what many don't know is later that year (2007) she also played a stoner chick in Mama's Boy. So as much as I like Natalie Portman, I'm off her unless it's her and Faris.... Oh yeah, Mama's Boy also has other references to pot, like the monkey dong bong, man I wish I could find that! hahaha, and Faris won Stonette or something like that for '07 at the stoner awards. Faris rocks.

hey #9 didn't say it was good said it existed as a female stoner movie, it was dull, badly shot, and not very well acted.

Okay, three things I hate hearing about: James Cameron, 3d and stoner movies... Seriously? Stoner isn't a word in the "spell check" dictionary?

This is why I love Portman, always taking on roles that are just unsuspecting of her Expect the unexpected with her. Love stoner comedies as well so I'm certainly sold

i think it seems swell. and even if it isn't original, portman's big name can get the film both the attention and budget a female-driven movie that does women justice needs. there's a quote of hers i got from a vouge that gives me a lot of hope for this, "there's a difference between being in a bra and underpants as an object on a men's magazine cover and playing yourself-- a woman with desires and needs who loves and laughs with her friends-- in a bra and underpants." maybe this is just my little femme-nazis rant, but i think the portrayal of women in hollywood needs to be done by women, and complicated ones at that, which makes me think (unlike number 8) that she is doing a good thing by dabbling in things other than acting. nothing against men, but they are men and that is their worldview which is respectable enough, but there is more to a woman than what has been popular in hollywood. costars, i vote ellen page. she's good for this role.
