Piranha 3D Footage Deemed Too Hot for Comic-Con Audience

Piranha 3D

We're only a little over a week away from diving into our full-fledged Comic-Con 2010 coverage in San Diego and we already have our first casualty of the convention (for now at least). Though nobody has actually died, one planned panel at the pop culture extravaganza has already pulled the plug because the footage that was intended to be screened was too racy for Comic-Con audiences. Paul Scheer updated his blog yesterday to say, "Piranha 3D has been banned from this year’s Comic Con Convention in San Diego for being too 'intense' and 'not family friendly.'" Though disappointing for those excited, this isn't entirely that surprising.

You see, despite the fact that Comic-Con is geared towards the 18-34 years old demographic, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of families with kids going around the convention center looking for a peak at their favorite superheroes or cartoons. Inevitably some of them end up in the bigger panel presentations just to make sure they actually make it into their desired panel and so any R-rated footage is deemed unfit for Comic-Con audiences. Since the film's driving force is plenty of bloody violence and rampant Girls Gone Wild style nudity (at least judging from pictures popping up online), it's understandable why this decision was made, but that doesn't make it any less disappointing for anyone excited for the campy horror remake.

But don't fret just yet, as Scheer says: "More details to follow. You can't keep Piranha down." There's talk about The Weinstein Company potentially re-submitting with tame footage to promote the flick (they've already decided to not do an officially sanctioned Comic-Con panel if they aren't allowed to show footage), but it's more likely that an off-site panel will be planned to avoid adhering to the rules of the convention. STYD points out the same issue cropped up with Alex Aja's Mirrors, and they ended up off-site, too. Stay tuned to find out when/if the Piranha panel takes place and if this footage ever makes it to Comic-Con.

I just saw some of the 3d from this movie. NO HEADACHES. It's amazing! It's nothing like the crappy trailer from Avatar's screening. The massacre sequence is sick.
