In a move likely meant to generate more buzz and awareness for this week's Blu-Ray/DVD release of DreamWorks Animation's best recent film, How to Train Your Dragon, some returning cast members for the previously announced sequel have just been revealed via press release. Reprising their roles from the first film are Jay Baruchel, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig. In addition, Dean DeBlois will return as writer and director with Bonnie Arnold producing, and his co-director Chris Sanders executive producing, though he's not helping to direct the sequel.
It's not clear what storyline will the sequel will follow (or if there's still a chance for Gerard Butler to return with everyone else), but with a whole series of books from Cressida Cowell as inspiration, there's plenty of ideas. A couple titles include How to Be a Pirate and How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse with six more books in the series that could be adapted for the big screen. All we know right now is is the sequel will bring Hiccup and his faithful dragon Toothless along with much of their Viking tribe back to theaters, once again in 3D, for release sometime in 2013.
It'll be hard to top the original film which is one of the few truly impressive endeavors from DreamWorks Animation, but it sounds like everyone onboard is quite excited.DeBlois says, "Ambitions are high with this epic next chapter, and together with an incredible team of filmmakers, we plan to build upon How to Train Your Dragon's originality, boldness and heart, in hopes of once again touching audiences around the world." Excited?
This was inevitable, and it could top the first one. With Toy Story 2 and Shrek 2 as examples, they could do it. Here's hoping they have people working on it who do it for more than a cash grab.
