Ron Perlman Playing Conan's Dad Instead of Mickey Rourke

Ron Perlman

When it was announced in January that Jason Momoa would star in Marcus Nispel's remake of Conan as the legendary barbarian himself, it was also revealed that Mickey Rourke was being considered to play his father Corin, the village blacksmith. Then, a few weeks ago, it was announced that Rourke would be joining Tarsem's War of the Gods. With Rourke taking on that role instead, that meant his spot in Conan was open, however, Vulture has now learned that it will be Ron Perlman (also seen as Hellboy) who will play Corin in place of Rourke. Another awesome addition to this cast, which seems to be coming together pretty well.

Conan is set to start shooting in Bulgaria later this month. We don't know much about the plot besides that it will (obviously) tell of Conan's adventures across the continent of Hyboria. Wikipedia also says Conan was born on a battlefield, so with Perlman cast as his dad, we might get to learn about his birth and upbringing before getting into the meat of the story. In addition to Jason Momoa and Perlman, the Conan cast includes Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Bob Sapp and Leo Howard. I'm actually looking forward to this quite a bit, Nispel seems to have put together a solid cast, and I'm not as worried as I've been previously. Thoughts?

I agree Recast Conan!!

TheLOLrapist on Mar 13, 2010

I would have rather seen king Conan!!! As old as Arnold is now, give him a beard and some fur to wear from head to toe and show these fools how it's done!!!

REAL6 on Mar 13, 2010

Having Arnold not involved in this is a big mistake. Not as Conan but as his Father. All I can say about Jason Momoa is he just doesn't fit the bill. Arnold set the bar too high. I know they're going to off set his smaller size with a faster quicker Conan, a bunch of fancy moves and fight style. But Conan is a raw power performance, a man of few words. Jason speaks too well and is a former model pretty boy with dreads. On Stargate all I wanted him to do was bathe and shut up. Years ago when Arnold and The Rock were attached to "King Conan", now thats what I wanted to see. Rant over. thanks

Some of these old Arnie fans need to take off the rose coloured glasses they are wearing. Nobody wants to see an old ass Arnie kickin ass unless your an old ass yourself. Talk about fanboys.

Hellboy94 on Mar 13, 2010

I would like to see Arnold in it, but maybe as the father. That would probably be too weird but I would like to see an appearance at least.

Mikw McRorey on Mar 13, 2010

I like Mickey Rourke, but I Ron Perlman seems like a better choice to me. They still need to recast Conan, though, ugh.

Craig on Mar 13, 2010

I agree somewhat with #9. It would be cool to see Arn as the dad. Or an appearance in some way.

Daniel Felts on Mar 13, 2010

Ironic that Perlman was the voice of Conan in the video game.

Big Red Moose on Mar 13, 2010

Fuck. Ron Perelmen should just BE Conan, and they could make it an older, wiser story. Conan the King or something. Dude from Twilight ... just not sure how that's gonna work out. (Get it? Work. Out.) Pump this flick up, any way you can. Meanwhile, Solomon Kane seems to be shaking things up, overseas ....

Django 3000 on Mar 13, 2010

give the guy a chance. he might just surprise us all. a new conan for a new age?

nacho on Mar 13, 2010

Forget the movies. Forget the comics. Forget the video games. Forget all those characters from the Conan movies - they have nothing to do with the real Conan as invented by Texan author Robert E. Howard in the 1930s. Go ahead and read the real Conan books, the stories written by Robert E. Howard.

David Banner on Mar 14, 2010

recast Conan or this will not be a conan movie.

Vold on Mar 15, 2010

Not to keen on the guy playing conan, unless he gets really roided out. All the rest of the cast is an after thought.

D on Mar 15, 2010

Just watched Alien 4 last week. Bad movie but he was awesome in it. Come to think of it, I can't recall ever seeing him in anything he wasn't awesome in! The City of Lost Children is a favorite of mine. See it if you haven't already.

kevjohn on Mar 19, 2010

Jason Momoa as Conan? That's worse the AHHHnold.

Bill on Mar 30, 2010

Instantly UN-interested in the movie. Recast Conan!

I love anything Ron Perlman is in, I happen to think he steals the show! However being a big Arnold fan of the '70's, '80's, and 90's, I agree with #7, Conan's character was all about raw Power and swinging that sword now, and asking questions and having dialogue AFTER the heads of the enemy were rolling on the ground. He gathered powerful friends with his quiet charisma and they'd follow him into battle with the same Killer instinct that he had. THis dredlock model is too much a pretty boy... And now I find out he's all about the vocal... OK usually I go for the Intelligent guys, really!!! (I'm all team Edward here because he had 90 years before he met Bella that he sat around improving himself, getting smarter, learning 9 languages fluently, Learning to play the concert piano, getting multiple masters degrees from ivy league colleges Reading every book he could get his hands on to improve himself.... Jacob had pretty muscles, but that only goes so far, really!) However, when we are talking Conan, it's all about the muscles and the raw power and yes I do believe that there is a quiet intelligence behind it. I just don't see him as a vocal, dredlocky, pretty boy, ya know?
