Rumor: Radar Pictures Developing Film Based on Mafia Wars?

Mafia Wars

We all knew it was going to happen. With insane cross-promotions at 7-Eleven (see here) for the Facebook mini-games Mafia Wars and Farmville, we knew that one day someone in Hollywood would try to adapt one of those games into a feature. But will it actually work? We hope not. Pajiba is reporting that they've heard Radar Pictures (All About Steve, The Box, Twelve) is developing a movie based on the popular Facebook game Mafia Wars with the logline: "crime thriller based on the popular video game." Oooh, how original Hollywood! Alas, they don't have any other details, so we're only reporting this news as a rumor for now.

For those unfamiliar with Mafia Wars, created by Zynga, the game is now one of the most popular "casual games" ever on Facebook, with something like over 25 million players. It's kind of like The Sims in that you run a little mafia enterprise and earn cash and experience by completing jobs and so on. So in essence, it's just going to be a movie about the mafia? Big deal, who cares? See, Hollywood has it backwards. The game was inspired by movies, not the other way around. I really don't know how it's going to work or how they're going to come up with anything entertaining, but there's nothing we can do. Anyone play Mafia Wars?

Hmm I am a daily player of Mafia Wars, and I can't see a movie. I mean you do some untra-unrealistic things ranging from bribing a cop to stealing London's Crowned jewel, to builing a casino in vegas... How are they going to make a movie that pays the game respect? I don't think it would be done. But I'll tell you how they can lure in ticket sales! -- do something similar to the 7-Eleven collection. Although I won't see a crappy movie 10 times to complete a collection haha.

Wow, why don't they make a Farmville movie while they're at it.

How will they translate that classic Zynga experience to the big screen? I mean, they could make it 'badly written' and 'lacking in originality' but how would you convey 'broken more often than not' in movie terms?

Farmville is a pleasant way to pass a few minutes...kinda like a zen garden...but Mafia Wars is so absolutely useless... there are NO animated sequences of any kind so WTF are they going to make a movie out of here???? Godfrey Daniels...I guess there is simply no limit to to how pathetic Hollywood can get...I hope they lose every fu*king dime they put into this crap...somebody please rush out to the Holloywood ward and pull all the plugs...
