Sally Field in Early Talks to Play Aunt May in Webb's Spider-Man

After finding out only hours ago that Martin Sheen would play wise Uncle Ben in Marc Webb's forthcoming reboot of Spider-Man, and now it looks like we also have some talent for the charming, feisty Aunt May. Heat Vision is reporting that Sally Field (Forrest Gump, "Brothers & Sisters") has been cast as the pivotal supporting character who becomes the only family Peter Parker has left in his life after the tragic death of his Uncle Ben. At least that's how the story played out in the comics and Sam Raimi's adaptation previously, so we can certainly expect Aunt May to become quite a pillar in Peter Parker's crazy superhero life. Read on!
As far as casting goes, Sally Field and Martin Sheen are great choices for Parker's parental aunt and uncle duo. Field has shown that she can be a feisty but frail woman as Mrs. Gump alongside Tom Hanks' Forrest Gump, so this won't be anything new for her. In the comics, Aunt May found herself always getting sick with worry, as well as frequently becoming physically ill which would only add to Peter's personal problems. Interestingly enough, Field hasn't made a film since the dreadfully unnecessary 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. While this will be quite the upgrade in her recent film career, it's also great to have an Academy Award winning actress in Spider-Man's corner. What do you guys think?

This is much better than Martin Sheen! Good choice, hope it goes through.

Not bad, but a reboot so soon? Makes no sense.

Sally Field? Ewww, no! Helen Mirren, please. If they're going to bring Aunt May into this, they should go with the tough-as-nails inner-strength old lady version of Aunt May, like during the Straczynski run or even the Ultimate version. I'd rather not have to deal with another wilting lily clutching at her housecoat and going "ohh, Peter!" every five minutes. There's a lot more to the character than that.

@ pete the geek, Sally Fields can definitely do tough as nails, Helen Mirren is a little too over the top and regal. Sally Fields is no wilting old granny.

Not so keen on either of them. Fields could be ok but Sheen? Meh.

Spiderman? Meh ... Been there, done that, no interest in seeing it start all over again; Hell, everyone, including Bin Laden, the Klingons and Ceylons are tired of the origin story I was more interested in seeing where Raimi was going to take it beyond the last one.

I so hope this will be good. I lost faith in Raimi when the first shot of Power Rangers Green Goblin was shown. He has no cinematic taste.... yuck... Hopefully this can balance a serious tone with humour and don't make everything look like toys.

Christ. Even the casting for this movie seems so... "one-uppy". I get the worst feelings from these movie updates.

She is an excellent choice. Yeah, she is in a dumb TV show for old ladies now, but she is a great actress.
