Dev Patel

Although we've yet to see Dev Patel acting in anything other than Slumdog Millionaire (although he is in The Last Airbender), Fox Searchlight thinks they've got another hit on their hands, as they're working on another new project called The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel that Patel will be starring in. Based on the novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, Exotic Marigold Hotel is about a group of British senior citizens who travel to India to live out their dotage and find a new lease on life. Other high profile actors like Julie Christie, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson and Peter O'Toole are being courted for roles, but not signed yet.

According to the LA Times, Patel is currently "in talks" to co-star, but since plot details are quite vague (and I haven't read the book), we don't know much about the character he might be playing. Searchlight has also hired Oscar nominated director John Madden (of Ethan Frome, Shakespeare in Love, Proof and Killshot previously) to direct the film. It's still in the early development stages, but I feel like Searchlight is crafting another awards knockout with this project. If they can pull together a great British cast, shoot it in India, they'll at least have a pretty good shot. I just feel like this is a project I should be keeping a close eye on.
