Simon West

With recent misfires like the remake of When a Stranger Calls and the video game adaptation Lara Croft: Tomb Raider behind him, director Simon West has been returning to the action roots of Con-Air that spawned his directing career. The Jason Statham led remake The Mechanic is coming next year, and the filmmaker is currently shooting Protection with Dwayne Johnson. Now 24 Frames is reporting the director has already lined up another fast-paced, albeit familiar, film with Medallion, the story of a father who has just a few hours to locate his kidnapped daughter locked by hostage-takers in the trunk of an unidentified New York City cab.

Though the film seems like another attempt to duplicate the success of Taken, I will say that I have fond memories of enjoying, and to this day still love watching, the off-the-wall action ride that is Con-Air. Enticing the prospect of this film is a script from David Guggenheim (not to be confused with documentary director Davis Guggenheim) who is having his screenplay Safe House headed to the big screen with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington taking the lead roles. Of course, having McG onboard as producer kind of hurts a little bit, at least from a quality standpoint. Apparently names like Clive Owen and Nicolas Cage are being mentioned to potentially lead Medallion, but nothing is set in stone yet. We'll keep you posted as this project develops. Interested?

Bummer that Clive Owen is competing with Nic Cage for comparable roles. Thats gotta hurt.

Clive Owen had his chance to shine, he's a fine fine actor, one of the best, but Hollywood success eludes him for some reason. Some people say he simply isn't perfect looking enough...I never saw that, but heard it from many others. Still, he may find a role that will define him...if more people had seen Children of Men, things would have been different, but it's an understandably hard film to market, albeit, one of the most gorgeously shot and sensitively acted films of recent memory.
