Sound Off: Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism - How Was It?
by Alex Billington

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Arriving in theaters today is a new movie produced by Eli Roth, directed by A Necessary Death's Daniel Stamm, starring Patrick Fabian as Reverend Cotton Marcus, called The Last Exorcism, a horror "documentary" about Marcus' final exorcism. So how was it? What do all the horror fans think of this new take on exorcism? It currently has a surprising 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. How was Fabian as Marcus and the rest of the cast? Was the documentary style just a gimmick or did it work well? If you've seen it, leave a comment and let us know what you thought of The Last Exorcism!
I haven't seen The Last Exorcism myself and will not be contributing to this discussion, however I've heard mixed things about the movie, mostly that it starts out great but loses its steam by the third act. I'm not the biggest horror fan myself, but if I hear that a horror flick is a must see I'll check it out, but I haven't heard that about this film yet. I trust Ryan Rotten of STYD and even he didn't like it that much. Is it good at all?
What did you think of The Last Exorcism? Another unique modern horror flick or just awful?
There some good parts but overall it was stupid. The ending made it even worse.

A lot of horror movies these days go for the documentary approach and are usually able to pull it off well. However, this one wasn't that great. In order for it to be a true documentary horror film, there shouldnt have been background music. There was no background music in The Blair Witch Project nor in Paranormal Activity. The build up in the movie was decent, but there was no story explaining where the footage came from. It didn't feel realistic. The plot was decent and there were some eerie moments, but the movie fell apart towards the end.

#3 - the mist was terrible?.........what are a couple of examples of horror movies that you think are good?......just curious. i thought it was very entertaining (and creepy). my only beef with this (and other horror movies) is this : if it was me, i'd have gotten the hell out of there!!! of course, that wouldn't have made much of a movie...........LOL
beavis on Aug 27, 2010
I don't personally require a lot of opinion either way to see or not see a horror movie. So far, the comments posted alone have swayed me to not see it. Welcome to my queue Mr. Last Exorcism.

Incredibly disappointing. If you've seen the trailer (and I know you have if you're reading this), you have seen 99% of the "scares" this movie has to offer. This movie had a great premise, but failed to execute. Very sad. I don't understand the mainstream reviewers this year.

Dear Mr Director, Please kindly send $19 dollars refunded back to my credit card for the purchase of tickets to see one of the worse movies of this era. This country is in recession and the thought of you making movies as such is even sadder than our economy. Please make formal apology on CNN for lack of talent in directing, and either refund tickets or donate them to film schools to ensure films like this will never been seen again.

EXORCISMS ARE REAL! DEMONS ARE ALL AROUND US. OUR NEGATIVITY AND HATRED FEEDS THEM. AS VAMPIRES FEED OFF OF BLOOD. BEING A REALIST, I PERCEIVED THE LEGITIMACY OF THE CONTENT OF THIS DOCUMENTARY. THE FILM WAS DESIGNED TO SHOW THE WORLD THE TRUTH BEHIND DEMON POSSESSION, WHICH IS VERY MUCH ALIVE IN OUR SOCIETY. THE EVIL FORCES IN THE AIR AND THROUGHOUT THE EARTH ARE RESOUNDING. IF YOU ARE NOT A BELIEVER, THEN THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT YOU HAVE BEEN BLINDED BY DEMONS OR A DEMON IN YOUR OWN LIFE. ALIGN YOURSELF WITH A HIGHER POWER, OTHER THAN YOURSELF. THAT IS MAN'S DOWNFALL, SELF EXALTION. YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO REV. COTTON MARCUS, HIS LIFE BECAME VOID BECAUSE OF HIS DECEIT AND NOT TAKING THINGS SERIOUSLY BEFORE IT WAS TOO LATE. WARNINGS, SIGNS AND SYMBOLS WERE THERE TO TAKE HEED OF WHAT WAS TO COME BUT YET, HE STARTED DOWN A PATH HE WAS UNABLE TO UN-TRAVEL. CALEB TOLD HIM IN THE BEGINNING TO LEAVE, BUT GREED HAD TAKEN OVER REV. COTTON MARCUS. AS FOR NELL, SHE APPEARED TO BE NORMAL AND A LITTLE ALOOF, BUT SHE WAS OBVIOUSLY POSSESSED. READ YOUR BIBLE AND READ ABOUT ALL OF THE DEMON POSSESSIONS THAT JESUS HIMSELF HAD TO EXORCIZE. HOPEFULLY, YOU WILL SEE PAST THE NATURAL EYE AND OPEN YOUR SPIRITUAL EYE AND SEE THINGS AS THEY TRULY ARE! LOVE, ANGEL

Cheers for adding that Angel, it's nice of you to visit a film site in between ridding the world of vampires and other ghouls. Hope things with Buffy worked out.

im sad because i went in with high expectations, being that it was roths production and all. that being said, the whole thing fell apart in the third act. The actors were robbed of a decent storyline and it definitely showed towards the end. No doubt there were some jumpy moments, but nothing major to hold it together...
Adrian Garcia on Aug 28, 2010
Not sure if I would go see this in the theater, but would definitely rent it!

I saw this movie with my girlfriend and I have to say that the movie started out very interesting and then about half way through it got really dumb, the ending was pretty terrible and worst of all many questions were left unanswered. My advice skip it
David on Aug 28, 2010
I seem to be in the minority but I thought it was very well done. I understand people's gripes about the ending, but in so many Exorcism films, the demon is exorcised, somebody possibly dies along the way and all is well and good afterwards. I felt like while although it wasnt the greatest ending ever, it was different than most exorcism films. And also, i think the end shows that the movie was truly about Cotton Marcus and his beliefs (or lack-there-of), than it was about the actual exorcism itself. I dont want to get too much into spoilers, but I think when the emphasis was taken off of the exorcism itself, it was a great addition to the film. I agree with David that there were some unanswered questions, but that doesnt bother me, i dont need everything wrapped up in a bow with everything answered, but thats just my opinion, every viewer is different. While not the greatest film of the summer, given today's state of horror movies, I think this is a welcome addition.

I saw The Last Exorcism on Friday afternoon. I have also recently seen Piranha 3D; both movies have a touch of Eli Roth in some respect but the two movies couldn't be more different in the same genre of horror. The Last Exorcism actually fits better as a thriller with a strong drama element and left alot to be desired. The documentary style works for the premise of the story in the first two acts and I can appreciate the more natural approach to a supernatural story to convince the audience of its authenticity to real life. But the bottom line is that this movie sucks. In the third act the single camera works against what the audience needs to believe what is happening to the girl in the third act. You don't see enough of the girls worst behavior or the Satanic worship to appreciate the change after the movie panders to the cynical mind set of the average movie goer before-hand. The Rev. Cotton is an interesting character that provides a lot of insight to his corroding faith and the tools for scamming the blind faithful but the film looses its momentum in building the tension and caring for Rev.Cotton and the other characters by the third act. The third act represents a reconciliation with Cotton's faith and to fulfill the arc completely it ended too soon. Cotton needs a final moment with the camera in some capacity to atone or confess for his doubts . As it stands, the movie falls flat. I recommend a rental or TV viewing on basic cable but no one will miss anything special if they stay home and watch a Seinfeld rerun instead.

This was the worst movie I've seen all year! A horrible, horrible movie. It took about 30 min to get into the movie. This shit was terrible. Ugh, wish I could get my money back.

TRACY DANG on Aug 28, 2010
I think everyone that hate this movie are doing it for the wrong reasons. It did not fall apart at the end like everybody is claiming and it's not supposed to be a sequel from the other excersism movies so you can't really compare them. And in real exorcisms things don't always pop out and scare you like in the movies so I think it has an appropriate number of scares in it. But this movie presents the creepiness of excersisms just great. I often found myself not wanting to look at the screen just because it was so anticipating, and down right creepy and freaky to look at. But without spoiling it, all I can say about the ending is OMG. It literally tells you about what is going to happen between the lines of the dialoge but it doesn't hit you till the end and it's unbelievable of what this movie came out to be in the end contrast to the beginning. People that have no comprehension of life or God/demons AKA pretty much dumb and just want to see something scary won't like this movie. And are the haters. Go watch it if you want to see a really good layered story plot movie. And it's just a crazy ending to what happened.
Andrew Linares on Aug 29, 2010
But it does end abruptly and I wish it went a little more in depth about the ending. But that leaves it to the imagination and it's just getting to me haha
Andrew Linares on Aug 29, 2010
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!! BAD< BAD< BAD Not scary at all ! Big waste of time
Jackie on Aug 29, 2010
Anyone who claims this is the worst movie of the year, or ever made, should not be allowed to review a movie ever again. This is NOT your average horror film. There are no cheap scares or CGI. It's a faux documentary thriller/drama about religion and faith. It's an extremely well made movie. Acting, writing, direction. I'll agree with those who said it's not very scary. But it is eerie.
Film Fan on Aug 29, 2010
This movie was a complete waste of time. It's a PG-13 horror film. That alone should have clued me in to the stupidity I was about to witness. All positive praise/review for this film HAS to be studio bought. Completely lame. Just lame. And I'm a pretty forgiving moviegoer.
Refund Please! on Aug 30, 2010
Loved it! It had an ending i never seen coming!
Keith on Aug 30, 2010
All of you who don't like this movie obviously can't appreciate a good story. It was great! It even had a hint of mystery in it. The ending was very well done and it was pretty scary. If breaking your own fingers isn't a mindf**k then I don't know what is. You all act like this movie should be following some standard method of producing a horror film. That's what makes it so good is that it doesn't do anything that other movies do.
