Theron & Farmiga Rumored for Roles in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Since it's a slow news week so far, why not toss around some rumored names for Christopher Nolan's recently titled sequel The Dark Knight Rises. It's been mentioned elsewhere previously that Nolan has been meeting with actresses to take a lead female role in the anticipated franchise sequel. Obviously since Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) won't return, at least one female lead role needs to show up, but a new rumor has two major female roles looking to be cast. Comic Book Movie reports Charlize Theron is being considered for one while Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air) and Kacie Thomas (The Burning Plain) are up for the second. Read on!

Theron is apparently up for the role of Detective Sarah Essen, a love interest for Commissioner Jim Gordon. In the comics, Essen is partnered with Gordon and they begin a romantic affair. Theron seems a little young for Gordon, but maybe they'll be changing the way she interacts with Gordon. Of course, there's always the change this is simply a red herring and maybe Theron is up for playing Catwoman. I'm not at all against seeing Theron in some tight leather outfits.

Meanwhile, Farmiga and Thomas are both up for the role of Julie Madison, a love interest for Bruce Wayne. In the comics, Madison was a socialite once engaged to Bruce Wayne and thought she was unaware of his being Batman, she was used as a pawn by the vampiric villain Monk in his battle against the Caped Crusader. While the roles are certainly possibilities, these are definitely rumors at this point, and likely these characters could end up having a completely different impact on the story in the film than they have previously had on the comic books. We'll likely be hearing some official casting for The Dark Knight Rises soon enough so stay tuned.

I know a lot of people aren't looking forward to a Catwoman, but I for one thought that Michelle Pfeiffer was the ONLY good thing about Batman Returns! The Batmobile was pretty cool too though, now that I think about it. Just how they really gave it some texture... except when it split apart and turned into a driving dildo. Hmm... Nope, I take it back. Catwoman was the only good thing in Batman Returns.

Im down for seeing some Catwoman action on the big screen again! If there is one director who could translate it perfectly on screen, it's Nolan. I'd prefer that to any of these lesser-known villians like Hush. I really want the Penguin though....but it doesn't sound like that's even being considered as an option...bummer.

I vote for a Cat burgular, not called cat woman. Whatever the case Nolan will stay true to his vision which has worked so far. I'm in. I just gotta stop reading teasers like this until we get confirmations. Even then, the less I know the better.

Bring back Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy! LOL Make them darker and crap. Well, the whole poison ivy powers thing miiight ruin the dark and gritty atmosphere of the Dark Knight franchise...sooo, never mind. :/

I think the lead villian will be Black Mask who ends up getting killed by catwoman. Amanda Seyfried / Mary Elizabeth Winstead / Minka Kelly should be Catwoman but in a smaller but pivotal role as a lead back into the franchise. I don't think she will be front and center and a big bad villain. More caught up in the plot as she is out for herself and not choosing sides. Some chemistry scenes with the Bat. No one cares about Comm Gordons love life. But we do care about his daughter. Kacie Thomas, could be gordons daughter aka batgirl lead up. not that she will put on the costume.

NO CATWOMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Selina Kyle/Bruce Wayne relationship deserves its own franchise, not to be the end of this trilogy. Please let it be the Penguin or some other MALE villain. Maybe one of the girls could be Harley Quinn as a link to the Joker? That would keep the story line going without showing the Joker. Any thoughts?

I'm not at all interested, in the idea of seeing the Catwoman character; but even if she is part of the story, I will go out to see Nolan's next Batman film. So I see no point in complaining about the possibility. All we have heard for sure is that there will be no Riddler. I like how Nolan does these villains, in a more realistic style. Both Burton and (especially) Schumacher made the mistake of having the villains play more like WWE combatants. Burton did a good job, with Joker in his first film; but not so good, with Catwoman and especially the Penguin, in his second film. They were too goofy and not threatening enough; the low point being the penguins, with little rockets strapped to them, waddling across a silly looking set. The Schumacher films are so bad it would take too long to describe the many ways he went wrong, with the portrayal, of the villains.

Please please please YES! I know Charlize is completely capable of pulling off Catwoman - she has amazing range and the right look for the role. But if she isn't playing Catwoman (which would be a shame), I'd still love to see her in this film.

I'm gonna throw in with Penguin for sure and maybe Catwoman if they're gonna start casting a bunch of females. Poison Ivy is too supernatural of a character. These films seem to be pretty grounded in reality, even if the premise is a bit hard to believe. Honestly, I'd like to see Nolan just ditch the comic book villains entirely and come up with his own bad guy. I mean, seriously, he and his brother are great friggin writers and I'd love to see them come up with their own villain. Something entirely unpredictable. The animated series made up a number of characters, including the now popular Harley Quinn.

No theron. Caught Aeon Flux on Netfix last night and it was hot garbage. she's not an action star. SUPER hot, but not a broody enough actress for this type movie.

I have no doubt that Theron would look just f**king fine in tight leather...but lets take a giant leap here and forget about pleasing the pre-teen hard-ons and look at serious acting skills...Theron has the potential to do for Catwoman what Ledger did for the Joker...I really dont see this 3rd installment doing that well but if the right casting decisions are made it could jump up & surprise everyone...

Penso que Nolan deve seguir a mesma linha dos dois filmes anteriores, para não entrar na mesma linha tão infantil que foram os 4 filmes da outra série. Acho que devem aparecer mais vilões sem descartar em momento algum a presença da Mulher gato, e que uma grande atriz seja escalada para o papel até porque se for avaliar presença feminina nos anteriores...putz a katie holmes e outra Maggie Gyllenhaal de dark night deixam a desejar no quesito beleza, ou ele traz novamente a pfeiffer para uma catwoman mais sombria e cruel , ou inova com theron que é linda e com certeza fará uma catwoman inesquecivel.
