Twilight Actor Edi Gathegi Cast as Darwin in X-Men: First Class
The cast of Fox's X-Men: First Class prequel continues to grow. Deadline reports that actor Edi Gathegi, most recently seen as a vampire in the first two Twilight movies as well as in My Bloody Valentine, will play the mutant named Darwin in Matthew Vaughn's new X-Men movie. Darwin, one of the "Missing X-Men," has the powers of self-protection and "continuous circumstantial evolution," which allows him to adapt to any situation like growing gills if put underwater, or gaining night vision if too dark. Gathegi also appeared in that rogue independent Atlas Shrugged adaptation, but this is probably one of his biggest roles to date.
X-Men: First Class was conceived by Bryan Singer, recently rewritten by Jane Goldsman, and follows James MacAvoy as Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender as Magneto as young men discovering their powers for the first time, and meeting up with other mutants along the way. Director Matthew Vaughn begins shooting soon, aiming for release on June 3rd, 2011 next year. In addition to Gathegi as Darwin, Jennifer Lawrence is playing Mystique, Nicholas Hoult is playing Beast, Caleb Landry Jones is playing Banshee and Lucas Till is playing Havoc, with Kevin Bacon as a yet unidentified villain. Quite a strong up-and-coming young cast.

ugh...fuck this. The more I hear the more it sounds like an Origins: Wolverine level disaster.

Darwin ??? but he wasn't an Original X-man until after Krakoa ??? The hell ???

I sure hope this is an Origins: Wolverine level "disaster," because that's the only consistently enjoyable X-Men movie they've come out with so far! And when I was forced to watch that damn Twilight flick, Edi here was the only character I managed to like. So I'm in!!!

is this offically a reboot yet? The age disparity between the characters cast, Wolverine origins and the current continuity is kinda laime.... Whatever the case, looks like they're going GREAT lengths to distance themselves from X3.

Lol @ 7, well put. I'm still holding out a sliver of hope for this one. I love re-watching X2. I can't help but want to see another go at the X-Men like that film did.

This will also reunite (assuming they share some screen time together) Edi with Kevin Bacon who were in Death Sentence together in 2006.

The only reason I think this will be good is because Matthew Vaughan is directing. The guy is excellent. We'll see once there is actually some footage. Funny that it comes out next year, but dont remember hearing anything about it at Comic Con

#7: you're a fool! loll! the faculty of self protection...very refreshing loll! Here is what they say about him fighting : "instead of continually increasing Darwin's powers when taking punishment from the Hulk, his body simply teleported him away from the fight." Whoa! lolll!
