Updates on Captain America - Red Skull Confirmed as Villain

Director Joe Johnston has been out talking to press this weekend for his new movie The Wolfman and most of the discussion has ended up focusing on The First Avenger: Captain America. Johnston spoke with Collider and gave them a lot of details about the direction they're heading with the film. Additionally, ComingSoon confirmed (as did AICN) that the villain in Captain America will be Cap's arch-nemesis Red Skull, the Nazi badass whose head is just a red skull. Now this is the kind of awesome stuff that I like to hear because it's getting me very excited about seeing Johnston's Captain America movie come together.
The talk of the town recently has been that they're finalizing casting for Captain America. Johnston tells Hero Complex about the kind of actors they're looking at. "Well, we're testing five or six guys," Johnston said. "The youngest is 23 the oldest is 32. Most of the guys in the war [are] just kids, 18 or 19, but we want to go a little bit older. We have to have somebody locked in before I leave March 1 for London." So he's got to have locked in soon. Johnston also tells Collider that he's definitely casting an American in the role as well. "I donβt think we could make without an American playing the part." So it sounds like this won't be Sam Worthington playing Cap at least. But who will it be? We've got a month to go and we'll know then?
Johnston also goes on to talk about how they're shooting this and a little bit about the style in the film.
"We're definitely going to shoot it in a different way than any of the other Marvel pictures have been shot. What I'm trying to do is look at the comics - most of the new ones like the Brubaker series - and to interpret that sort of visual style into a film in a way that I think has been tried before… It always looks a little too on the nose it looks like oh they're shooting a comic book movie. I want to try something a little bit different."
And, of course, there's some talk about the villain and that we can expect Red Skull in it. Ryan Rotten of ComingSoon talked with him bit about why they're setting it in WWII and going for the origin story on this.
"Virtually the entire story except the bookends are in World War II because we all recognize we have one chance to tell the origin story of how he became Captain America, you can't tell a modern story and then go back and tell the origin story. If you're going to do it, let's do it. Let's do it first. Everyone wanted to tell an origin story. There was a version where it was a modern story and it didn't work."
That's about all the good stuff we've got for now on Captain America. But you can head over to Collider, Hero Complex, and ComingSoon for more quotes from Johnston and updates on the movie. Although I'm not 100% confident that Johnston will bring us a movie as good as Batman Begins, it does sound like they're headed in the right direction, and I can't wait to hear more about the movie including who the hell gets cast to play Cap. Right now there's no other question I want answered more! And then, who could play Red Skull? Would it be too easy to suggest Christoph Waltz or should they find someone different?

Uhh Alex Billington, you said Red Skulls head is a red "Flaming" skull ??? Well I got news slappy...he's not Ghost Rider...it's not "flaming" ..LMAO Anyway, I also read over on SHH that they have 5-6 actors in the range of 23-32 they are looking at ...and Joe Johnson states Cap should be cast by the end of this month. Finally....and now all the idiots saying they wanted a Older Captain America can STFU about Mark Valley !!! or Thomas Jane or Aaron Eckhart....plus he is going for a relative unknown. I am hoping for either Ryan McPartlin (CHUCK) or Jensen Ackles (SUPERNATURAL) Flaming skull ???? BWAHHAHHHAHAHA.....epic fail

Not Surprising. Cant wait to see who they cast for both roles. Glad it's not going to be Worthington. On the top of my head maybe Viggo Mortensen (might be too old) Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Cole Hauser. Keanu Reeves. I remember hearing they wanted maybe Leo Dicaprio or Brad Pitt. I think Ralph Fiennes would be a cool Red Skull.

I have no idea how they are going to pull of showing Red Skull without it being realistic. It could be very cartoony or something cheesy from G.I Joe. Or maybe they will interpret it as a metaphor like they did with the Ten Rings in Iron Man? I just hope it doesn't turn out to be like Ang Lee's Hulk!

Ryan McPartlin did read for the part of Cap, but because he's 35 years old (and Johnston said the oldest person he's looking at is 32)... well, that means he didn't get it. Sorry to break that to you (he'd be my pick). Jensen Ackles is 31, so technically he could still be in the running, but Johnston made it quite clear that he was looking for an unknown, and since Ackles is pretty well known for being on Supernatural, I doubt he's in the running either. As for the Red Skull, he didn't actually have a red skull at first - it was just a mask that looked like a red skull. The guys at Paramount got their first look at the costume designs this week (I know one of them) and he told me that the mask for red skull looks a lot like the one he was wearing recently in the Brubaker Captain America series. He also wasn't real impressed with the costumes, but most of the time they change the costumes before they start making actual mock-ups.

#6 Rubix, why are you surprised that the arch-enemy is in the first movie? Most superhero movies are like that. Superman-Lex Luthor Batman (Tim Burton)- the Joker Spider-man-Green Goblin Fantastic Four-Doctor Doom; Daredevil-Kingpin X-Men-Magneto The list goes on...

Has Tahmoh Penikett already been discussed as a possibility? He's older than they're shooting for, but he looks the part and is a decent actor. (Canuck though!) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0671886/

I had read somewhere that Richard Grieco (of 21 Jump Street fame) was going to be involved. Maybe that's our Red Skull? If they are going the unknown route for Cap, they definitely need some well established character actors to support. I'm thinkin Bruce Greenwood as a US army general or something. Also, anyone hear if Bucky is going to be in this one?

Fox would be great wit a bit more muscle but not blond hair π Captain America is not a kid he is older so I think Thomas Jane could pull it off, as well as Josh Lucas. I would think of a younger Dennis Quaid would be perfect Ok I'm going to say this but hold the firing squad, how about a bulked up Paul Walker? For the villain Fiennes would be brilliant, maybe James Woods?
