Winnie Trailer

Our friend Wilson at Black Voices debuted an early promo trailer (notice: it's very long and unpolished, so watch out) for Darrell Roodt's Winnie, a biopic telling the "whole story, good and bad," of Winnie Mandela, the former wife of South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela. Playing Winnie in the film is actress Jennifer Hudson, who hasn't appeared in much since her big debut in Dreamgirls. But best of all, playing Nelson Mandela this time is Terrence Howard, giving what looks like a riveting performance as a young, spirited Mandela compared to Morgan Freeman. It's a very long trailer, but this actually looks pretty good.

Watch an early promo trailer for Darrell Roodt's upcoming biopic Winnie from YouTube:

Focus ranges from her image as a mother, wife and steadfast supporter of her husband, to campaigning for his release from jail and fight against apartheid. The story in it focuses not so much on the sometimes negative press she received, but on the powerful love story that kept Winnie and Nelson together for years.

Winnie is directed by veteran South African filmmaker Darrell Roodt, whose past work includes a lot of low budget action flicks. The screenplay was co-written by Roodt as well as Andre Pieterse and Paul L. Johnson. It's based on the biography written by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob. As far as we know, this doesn't have a distributor yet, but we're not sure what its status is, as Film Bridge International also seems to be involved.

This looks terrible, is it in a parallel universe?

The guy recently announced that he wants to stay away from the spotlight....and yet they make movies about him and his surroundings. come on, give him a break! loll! Jennifer Hudson, with an oscar, she hasn't been in so much acclaimed movies since, she should focus more...

looks 'straight to hallmark',but there's so much emotion in her eyes,if this film doesn't do it I hope it at least propels her into more serious stuff

She'll probably get another Oscar for no reason.

That looked awful! It almost looked like a parody of a biopic... Like something SNL would do to make fun of sappy, almost caricature-like, depictions of famous people. Oh, and the makeup on the "old" Winnie didn't help much either... and the accents... Jeez

All you haters are sooooooooo mean spirited and nasty. If you are not a fan then why comment on the site. Jhud can give a rats ass how you feel about her one way are the other. The young super star is incredible and amazing and her talent speaks for itself. Jhud is most authentic. One of the most humbled and grounded artist in the business. Most people are just followers, and have no good reason for hating Jen. The movie will be a success because it is very deep and intense. They both went in very hard for this one.
