Watch This: First Trailer for Joe Dante's Thriller The Hole 3D

We haven't seen a new film from Gremlins director Joe Dante since Looney Tunes: Back in Action in 2003 and Small Soldiers in 1998 before that, but he's finally back with one. The Hole 3D is another unique Joe Dante-esque horror/thriller about some kids who discover a "bottomless hole" in their basement that "leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares." Our friends at Quiet Earth found the first trailer, and even though I first saw this at Comic-Con last year, this is the very first time it's ever appeared online. This looks cheesy and fun, but that's exactly the kind of horror films that Dante does well, so it should be good.
Watch the first promo trailer for Joe Dante's The Hole 3D, originally found via YouTube:
The Hole, filmed in 3-D, centers on Susan (Teri Polo), a mother who moves with her teen sons to a rural house where the three are forced to face their fears after discovering a bottomless hole in the basement.
The Hole is directed by one-of-a-kind filmmaker Joe Dante, of films like Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins, Explorers, Innerspace, The 'burbs, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and Small Soldiers. The script was written by Mark L. Smith, of only Séance and Vacancy previously. The Hole was shot independently and still doesn't have a US distributor yet. This already premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals last year but is currently laying dormant. However, Bloody-Disgusting says it could be ready for release in fall of this year.

This looks awesome! It plays at small fears we had as children that have carried over even into adulthood. It looks creepy and fun. Though, I think 3D is not needed.

I like Dante a lot, but a hate "kiddie" horror. Probably a pass.

Looks like it could hold its own. Where's the harm in giving this decent distribution? Definitely a summer fling, it will last a week with a fall release. Too bad.

It doesn't look cheesy at all, it looks fantastic! And it's not 'kiddie' horror, it's a family film in the best sense of the term. Like the classic Amblin Entertainment movies of the 80s. Like Dante's Gremlins, in fact. Which is surely a good thing? As a real film buff with an innate understanding of genre movies and a love for 50s schlock - the heyday of 3D - I imagine Dante will utilise the tech in a truly effective way, so there's nothing to worry about on that front. He's no hack.

7, Gremlins is a film the whole family can enjoy, this is pandering directly to the kiddies.

It looks like 4 episodes of the Twilight Zone stitched together. Slightly cheap on the cg too.

#9 - I respectfully disagree. I trust Dante totally when he has creative freedom. I mentioned Gremlins because it's one of the Amblin movies that Dante directed and was an indicator that we should have faith, but I basically meant to suggest that the trailer had a flavour of that 'movement' as a whole, rather than any specific film. Bringing back that 'Spielbergia' vibe to movies should be encouraged, I think. I'm actually getting an Eerie Indiana vibe off this, and I loved that show! Perhaps nostalgia is colouring my perception, but I'm looking forward to it regardless. More films from Dante = a good thing, as far as I'm concerned...

#10 got me lol. But this looks pretty spooky. I still hate clowns and strong hairy arms with the sleeves rolled up but not all the way.

Oh it went away? Someone leaked it? Man, I missed it. I've heard some good buzz on this from comic-con and Toronto. I totally want to see it. Seem like every movie out today is so filled with crazy special effects and zero story. It will be nice to finally see a movie with some mystery and suspense PLUS a good story, kind of like "The Sixth Sense." I'll buy a ticket to go check it out. When is the release date?

Sounds like a remake of the 1987 flick "The Gate" staring Stephen Dorff. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093075/ That was a creepy movie back in the day, though tame by today's standards.
