Watch This: First Trailer for Seth Rogen's 'The Green Hornet'
by Alex Billington
June 21, 2010

Sony has debuted the official trailer for Seth Rogen's The Green Hornet on Yahoo tonight. Rogen stars as Britt Reid, aka Green Hornet, and Jay Chou stars as his sidekick Kato. They're joined by Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, Edward James Olmos and Christoph Waltz as the bad guy. I've been waiting to see the trailer for this for a while, because with Michel Gondry directing, I'm more interested in seeing how he is tackling the character more than anything. I've got to say, the visuals and the action in this looks awesome, but boy does the comedic tone seem totally out of place. I didn't really laugh at all. Not sure what to make of this?
Watch the first official trailer for Sony's The Green Hornet from YouTube:
You can also watch The Green Hornet trailer in High Definition on Yahoo
The Green Hornet is directed by visionary French filmmaker Michel Gondry, who (in addition to numerous music videos and commercials) previously directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Dave Chappelle's Block Party and Be Kind Rewind. The screenplay was co-written by Evan Goldberg & Seth Rogen, of Pineapple Express and Superbad. This is based on the classic characters created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker in the 1930s, known best as a TV series in the 60's with Van Williams & Bruce Lee. Sony is bringing The Green Hornet to theaters (in 3D) starting on January 14th next year. Thoughts?

Looks a shit-ton better than I was expecting it to. Could still be a mess but my hopes are higher. The punchline at the end of the trailer was gold.

Looks like a fun time. I've watched some of the old serials and parts of the old TV Show. This looks like them but with an added benefit of a sense of humor. I'm there.

Wow.That was pretty sweet. I know some people won't be able to take Rogen seriously, but I think he's awesome. Looks like a good mix of action/comedy. I'm not that familiar with the Green Hornet, but I like the idea of posing as villians to bust the villians. Oh, and Kato is a Badass! he's part Q, part Alfred, and part Robin. I love the human Swiss Army knife line.

I guess I'm the only one who was waiting for a reason to enjoy this trailer. Ya the action is good, not super good but the saving grace I suppose is the comedy which I did not laugh one bit over. Pointing a gun at your face and pulling the trigger? How is that funny, even especially after he asked what it did etc. And Diaz looks out of place, I'm not sure what she'll add to this film other than a pretty star in a "semi important role". I suppose they added her hoping her performance could equal that of gwyneth paltrow in iron man 1 and 2, meh.

Instant cult-classic. Which means it'll be panned by critics, barely make any money in theaters, but will be extremely beloved by a select group of people and will make most of it's money in DVD sales.

Wow, as a fan of the character, I was afraid this was going to be terrible. But dammit, that was actually pretty good! You're right to say it was a bit tonally confusing with the humor, but I think they probably just used scenes that may have been out of context. Hopefully we'll see another trailer before too long with more finished footage.

Really apprehensive after watching this trailer. I am a huge fan of Gondry's direction, but this felt pretty mundane. heh this looks pretty kewl. I watched the original TV show in the 60s, and that had a bit of the same campy humor that the original 1960s Batman did. these kinds of movies are cartoons, live action comics, adn tehy need a bit of selfdeprecating humor to lighten the load. every fricken comic I read during my childhood has now been made "Serious" and Emo, and kinda sucks thereby. they're COMICS, People, wtf.

Ahaaahhhhhhhaaaaahhhhhaaaaa, suck it haters! This movie looks damn cool! This is the natural blow back from certain gritty and "realistic" comic book films, (yeah I'm talking to you Dark Night). I was getting tired of ferry boat moral conundrums and having to listening to Bruce Wayne complain about how tough it is being Batman for 2+ hours. Hoping for the best since I really have begun to hate Rogan more with every new movie he stars in, but hopefully Gondry can save this. Side note, can we please get over the need to shoot a rocket backwards in every humorous spy with sweet gadget movie. The inclusion of Cameron Diaz though only adds to the terrible casting though, just wait till you see Knight and Day and you'll know what I mean (though for the love of god please try and resist seeing it in theaters, torrent it later if you really must). Kevin Smith wrote about this on twitter and I anxiously headed to first showing to watch, but at first I read it to fast and really thought he was writing about a Green Lantern trailer.... so I was already pissed when I saw that it was just a trailer for Green Hornet. Not sure if Green Latern is going to be any good, I really just want to see what direction it's heading in, they seem like their trying to go so epic in scale.

Yep, Alex, the action and visuals look awesome. But I don't feel any need to watch this film. Lord, was Seth Rogen annoying in this trailer. I mean can the audience make an emotional connection with a character supported by such obvious acting? I'm not one to judge by trailers, but I think his emotional conviction, or rather lack of it, is pretty apparent. And as for the gag at the end, you know, the normal end-of-trailer-last-laugh gag; it's totally ripped off from that Brit comedy, Johnny English (as 50 noticed)! I'm surprised there's not much talk about what this would look like in *drumroll* the third dimension. And what's that 'one thing that's never been done in 3-D' all about, Alex? Any ideas?

Haha...good to know that someone reads my posts, but I would like a minute to explain myself. I went into the project expecting to hate it when it was first being shopped around, but then I saw how much passion Rogen had in selling it to a recession and post-strike Hollywood so I started to take notice. Then Michel Gondry signed on who despite never "wowing" me since has directed a film that's in my top 3 of all time (Eternal Sunshine of course). The man is also responsible for one of the most unique cinematography tricks for actions films in the past 20 years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KtghA0rkDY). So then Chow dropped out as director and then as Kato which I thought was a good thing because even though Bruce Lee made Kato famous with his martial arts skills, the original Kato was a master mechanic and driver with some fighting skills, but by no means was he a martial arts master. So they went with a relative unknown to American audiences which I think was a smart move as Chou has shown he can handle fight choreography (Curse of the Golden Flower), but also that he can handle a comedic role (Kung Fu Dunk, True Legend), and for such an iconic character as Kato no A lister was ever going to compare to Bruce Lee so it was a good idea to use someone who's a fan of the character and needs the role to serve as their breakout performance (ie Pine as Kirk worked quite well while Keanu as Klatu didn't really work at all). Then they got Christoph Waltz and Tom Wilkinson (who are easily two of my favorite actors working today so that's when I knew the script must be really solid if all these players are joining a project that the internet fanboys said was "doomed" from the very beginning. Whenever I see Wilkinson attached to anything I get chills because I think of the following piece of dialogue which led to the rebirth of Batman: " Because you think you got nothing to lose. But you haven't thought it through. You haven't thought about your lady friend down in the DA's office. You haven't though about your old butler. Bang! People from your world have so much to lose. Now, you think, because your mommy and your daddy got shot, you know the ugly side of life, but you don't. You've never tasted desperate. You're … you're Bruce Wayne, The Prince of Gotham. You'd have to go a thousand miles to meet someone who didn't know your name. So don't come down here with your anger, trying to prove something to yourself. This is a world you'll never understand. And you always fear … what you don't understand. Yeah, you got spirit, kid. I'll give you that. More than your old man, anyway. In the joint, Chill told me about the night he killed your parents. He said your father begged for mercy. Begged. Like a dog." In addition to Wilkinson, I cannot wait to see what Waltz can do to follow up his period centric role as The Jew Hunter. Waltz had his choice of dozens of projects following that role and he chose The Green Hornet so again, the script must be phenomenal and I can't wait to see his take on a contemporary gangster. My only complaint is that Cameron Diaz is involved, but I'll wait to make judgment on that until I see how she can handle action and comedy in Knight and Day. In my eyes, she's the only thing holding this project back, but maybe she'll surprise us. It's a good sign though that Rogen and Gondry could have easily went with some "eye-candy" for the role, but instead chose a veteran actress to carry the part. It shows that they believe in the story and action and that they don't need to resort to cheap tricks to sell the film to horny teenage boys. So in conclusion, I'm excited for this film due to the dedication of everyone involved, and despite your hating of Rogen you have to admit that every person in this film has their career on the line if it flops. It was a major risk for Gondry because everyone laughed at the idea of him making an action film and he has a lot to prove to audiences that he's not the "cardboard cutout" film maker everyone thinks he is. It was a risk for Rogen because no one thought he could lost 50 lbs and play a super hero not to mention write a script better than Kevin Smith's take on the iconic character. Most of all though, it was a HUGE risk for Sony with all the aforementioned issues to consider, but they made the film anyways and for what it cost them, if it flops it could mean the end of the studio. They were making this film when they were having all their issues with Raimi and they were looking for a new Summer tentpole in case Spiderman fell through (which it did). There's a lot riding on this project and for you to say you hate it because of Rogen's involvement is just plain naive. I may agree that Rogen is better behind the scenes, but from what I saw in this trailer he looked to have a bit of emotional depth this time around and has a lot to prove to people like you when this comes out. Put your hate for Rogen aside and see this project for it's history; if you're a cinephile then you have to be a little bit intrigued by the evolution of the film.
peloquin on Jun 24, 2010

Well said....good work. However.....if talent is the issue, then Rogen has no business...well being in the business. Bad acting is where I draw the line. Cage, Stiller for example I cannot get past the lack of talent and what transitions on the screen. Both were born into the craft with talented parents or relatives. Every frame makes me cringe. But when you hope for something, want something so bad....one of your childhood Heros being slung through the mud by a non-talent is ir-reversable. This means I will never see in my lifetime of a true treatment of GH. Which really makes me sad. Much like what the younger generation said concerning the Dragonball last year. Sure I am not 12 so I do not get the attraction to Rogen or his poor taste. All I see is the lack of actual timing, horrible delivery and screen presence that simply is not there. Passion for the project or passion for the $$$. ??? For instance....say Captain America was a life long Hero of yours....and FINALLY will become a film. Then you find out Rogen is the star and also creating the script.....do you see where I am coming from? I am no Chris Evans fan but I am excited for the CA film. Jonah Hex to me was an adventure waiting to happen, but we all saw what happened to that mess.....and Brolin is a good actor. Hell....cast Chris Porter as Bret Reid....he is actually very funny and orginal. The director I may agree has come up with some good stuff....but so has Abrahms and we have all seen the contempt for JJ. "Observe and Report II The Green Hornet" is dead to me. As much as I would love to see Wilkenson and Waltz....I will wait for their next films. Diaz is eye candy and nothing more. As I work for Sony....the execs were correct with their quotes...."un-watchable", "move the release date to January", "why did we trust Rogen?", " Bruce Lee will turn over in his grave." Yes they did panic and tried to save their asses with this, and it will not even come close to turning a profit... ( thus the 3-D treatment to gain more box office $$$), but will not be the end of the studio. Just a bad business and creative mistake. As the old saying goes...."In peloquin we trust".....with the exception of this debacle of O and R II The GH, I am still in agreement with the majority of your posts my Friend. PS Reeves was born to play Klatuu

Have to agree with Clover on this one. I would not want a child hood hero destroyed by a sub-par actor etc. Imagine if Rogen was cast as Wolverine. Or Nick Cage as The Dark Knight. Same relation to what he is saying. Does not work and looks like Rogen has pushed his own middle school humor on this as well. I will pass. At least Clover and Peloquin are still friends.

I love a good film debate where people use examples rather than just stating opinions. So yes Clover and I will remain blog buddies as he's one of the few who remain civil and keeps an open mind for discussion even if he disagrees. The internet would be a much friendlier place if everyone looked at people with differing views as a chance to learn rather than argue. You made a good point with the January release date too, that is where films go to die...

A Green Hornet fan's worst nightmare come true. Why did Sony have to pull down it's corporate pants and Seth Rogen all over the fine tradition of The Green Hornet? This is Legend of the Lone Ranger rising from it's dumb, dirty grave! Stupid white guy is brought along by near perfect non-White guy. OK, we get. The worst thing that could happen is that this would be a success and next we'll get Jack Black as Prince Namor. Urgh! ...and the Jon Eric Hexum Award goes to Seth Rogen as The Green Guy Who Shoots Himself In The Face! Haven't we seen that tired, sophmoric gag in about 20 Three Stooges shorts? Now that's an Action Hero we can be proud of! Even the costumes are sloppy. bhleck. (guilty pleasure... the Black Beauty rocks!)

I'm at least ineterested. Not a big fan of Rogan because he's always just done the same kind of movie over and over. Very, crude raunchy comedies. I get it! Try something different! Well this is different so I'm glad he's doing a different type of movie. I wouldn't have picked him in this role but after hating the idea of Keaton as Batman and being proven wrong, I reserve all judgement until I see the movie. Looks entertaining at least. Hopefully there is a decent story in there.

Reading Seth Rogen's name for this part kind of threw me at first, but I think he could possibly do something good with it-- part of the hilarity behind the original is the fact that the Green Hornet is virtually useless and gets his biscuits saved by Kato so it should be interesting, at the very least.

Once again a new comic based movie is being blasted and getting lots of comments. These are not award winning movies people! The fanatics are expecting epic films of their personal comic heros and set themselves up to be disappointed before the film ever arrives. If the critics wait until the right people are cast, the right people direct, and the right costumes are created and so forth--------we will all die of old age before any more comic book hero movies are made. It can be terrific and I will go see it when I can. It can be terrible and I will go see it when I can. I like comic book hero based movies. I dont care whom is the star, the director, the supporting cast or if its shot in 3D, or B&W. I just want Hollywood to keep making these movies. Some of us will like them and hopefully they will be fun. Entertainment is the key here not the overall content. One can pick apart every little thing and find those flaws in every film. What good does that do unless its just your thing. The worst thing about reviews is everyone has an opinion, but nothing that is written here or anywhere else will change my attitude or thoughts about seeing a movie. I make up my own mind without knowing what everyone else thinks or says. If it has a comic book basis for the movie I will enjoy it and eat more popcorn. Randy

I particularly liked Sam Worthington as the Columbia statue at the beginning of the trailer and as the guy in the red leather coat and gas mask at 01:15.

Might have turned out better if George Miller had gotten to make it in Australia instead, except I dont think I could stand seeing Worthington or Innes or any of the other Aussie actors appearing in EVERYTHING yet again. Why did he shelve this in favour of the Mad Max IV Tom hardy fiasco?

Come on give him a chance, Seth Rogen lost 30 pounds to play the leading role and also wrote the screenplay, lol.

I noticed that only a handful of people mentioned the comics, and I'd like to point out a few things; 1. In the ORIGINAL comics, as in before the TV show with Bruce Lee as Kato, Green Hornet and Kato were more like partners than hero and sidekick. Britt Reid had the money to finance their extracurricular activities, and just enough know-how to hold his own in a street fight. Kato was his driver and weapons maker. And the TV show highlighted Bruce Lee as Kato because HE WAS BRUCE LEE. That's why GH never did much in the show. 2. Though they probably won't mention this in the movie, Britt Reid is a direct descendant of the Lone Ranger. The whole concept was Britt carrying on that heritage with Kato as a modern day Tanto. Since traveling around with a mask was a bit out of the question in modern comics, he did pose as a villain in order to take them out better. 3. All of these, except maybe the Lone Ranger bit, are made manifest once again in the current comics. Which this movie seems to be taking into account. And, I do see Seth Rogen doing things other than saying stupid shit. He's using the guns, beating up on bad guys, the works. I counted at least as many action shots of Green Hornet as I did Kato. And THAT'S how it should be. And I do agree with #111. Both my wife and I were EXTREMELY happy to see Seth Rogen in a good role that wasn't entirely comedic, and she was mightily impressed with his apparent weight loss. He looks healthy rather than fat now, and I like that. I'm thinking January Blockbuster. Besides, this trailer looks better than ANYTHING put out for Legion or Daybreakers. Both of which were descent films, but didn't wow me in trailers like Green Hornet does.

@109 - Hilarious! Worthington does seem to be too many places at once.

Disappointed 110: It's not Mad Max 4, it's an update remake of 1. Ony if Mel Gibson was involved would it be a follow on (twent years hence) to Thunderdome - as it was initally planned but this is a re-boot, like Star Trek. Still can't wait for it though. Perhaps Miller will remake 2 and 3 in the modern context too? Certainly the world is close to that kind of chaos than any time in the last century.

In Australia, we just heard today that Fury Road is getting held back to at least Feb 2011 and this is due to Mel Gisbon indicating he is now invloved in the films (yes films) but is not available to work until after jan 2011 as he has other current projects. $100m budget is also nearly doubling, so this could be epic.
