The Romantics Trailer

Don't be fooled by the illustrious title, The Romantics isn't as good as it sounds. I saw it at Sundance and really didn't like it, but we'll get into that later. Apple has debuted the official trailer for Galt Niederhoffer's adaptation of her own book starring: Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Adam Brody and Elijah Wood. The film is essentially a more hipster-ish (or so I think) version of Rachel Getting Married, about a young girl's wedding and the chaos that ensues when her friends arrive. There is plenty of comedy and drama, but it's not even half as good as Rachel Getting Married, so tread carefully.

Seven close friends reunite for a wedding of two of their friends. Problems arise because the bride and the maid of honor have had a long rivalry over the groom. Based on Niederhoffer's novel of the same name.

The Romantics is both written and directed by American filmmaker & novelist Galt Niederhoffer, a veteran producer who also directed Myth America and Six Chicks in a Kitchen. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was picked up by Paramount Famous Productions for distribution (a new indie label?). For any of you now interested in seeing this, The Romantics arrives in limited theaters starting on September 10th next month. I can't suggest seeing this, but it's not a terrible film either. Anyone curious?

the movie doesn't seem bad, but the characters come across (to me, anyways) as yuppies (which is not a good thing) i also don't care to sit through close to 2 hours of katie holmes and josh duhamel acting uncomfortable and lovestruck around each other -and that seems to be the main thrust of the movie. i would have to believe this is better than RGM because i didn't like that at all (the acting and pacing of that movie was abysmal). you know, i think alex nailed this one perfectly - it doesn't look like a terrible film........but it also doesn't look like one i'm really anxious to see.

Aren't most folk like this? Minus the money and the stupid outfits. At least these folk aren't inbreeding.

is it just me or is it a bit pretentious to write a novel, then write the screenplay for that novel, and also direct said screenplay? will he also be in charge of distribution and all reviews? i dunno, maybe it's just me. but, yeah, looks pedestrian.

The characters in Rachel Getting Married actually seemed to be feeling things. I'm not sure these people actually feel anything about what they're doing. Also, worst music choice ever.

maybe it won't be better than RGM, but it can't be worse than most other recent wedding themed movies, such as (but not limited to) 27 Dresses, Made of Honor, Bride Wars, etc.

There's some big names in this for a first time director so I'm intrigued, but Rachel Getting Married is in my top 5 so this would have some big shoes to fill. ...No scene has every played with my emotions as successfully as the dishwasher loading scene in RGM.

amanda - you've got a point. while this isn't a movie i feel the need to see - it certainly does look better than any recent wedding-themed films. peloqin - the dishwasher loading scene in RGM was the most emotional scene you've ever seen?..............i hope you're kidding.
