Whoa - Trailer Debut for Crazy TIFF Midnight Film 'Red Nights'

Whoa. We have a very weird trailer to debut for you today for a film that will be playing in the Toronto Film Festival 2010 Midnight Madness category, which is where all the dark, weird stuff goes. It's a French-Hong Kong film from filmmaking duo Julien Carbon & Laurent Courtiaud titled Red Nights (in English) starring Carrie Ng (Sex Medusa) and Frédérique Bel (Adèle Blanc-Sec). It's kind of a modern, bondage version of a Cantonese Opera. Here's how this was pitched to me: "If you are interested in lethal Chinese ladies with jade claws and moody French women with Mausers, you can take a look at our teaser." Need to say more?
Watch the first trailer for Julien Carbon & Laurent Courtiaud's Red Nights:
This shocking debut by director duo Carbon & Courtiaud is a seductive cat-and-mouse thriller set in Hong Kong, about one woman's obsessive desire to own a rare object that hides a deadly and perverse secret.
Red Nights, or Les nuits rouges du bourreau de jade originally in French, is both written and co-directed by first-time French filmmakers Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud, who originally started as writers before making the leap to directing with this film. This was shot mostly in Hong Kong and will be premiering at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Red Nights does not have a distributor yet (hence no MPAA tag) so stick around for buzz and our initial reaction sometime in mid-September. Anyone like the way this looks?

totally happened to me once... and by the by, didn't see a luger in the trailer, the pistol the french chick pulled out of the pocket looks like a mauser c96

Just an FYI the gun shown is not a Luger its a Broomhandle Mauser. Older than the Luger 1896 to 1908. Think Winston Churchill in the Boer War as opposed to WW1 or WW2. Interesting choice of weaponry as its not one that is seen in movies much at all anymore.

What does the woman say at the end of the trailer?
John on Aug 24, 2010
"What does the woman say at the end of the trailer?" I think it translates to "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine." Whatever she says, count me in for this one. Looks too interesting to pass up.

What the hell are you guys talking about??? This looks too weird to be any good. Fucked up Asian women with claws and fetishes.....doesn't sound appealing. Sorry.

She says "A little pain can give so much pleasure"

wow.........very stylized violence laced with eroticism - and it seems to work (to my surprise). as long as it has english subtititles (so i know what's going on!) - i''m in!

Well, it looks like a better movie than most of what I have seen recently. I'm interested.

I'm having trouble describing what I just saw.

I understand it it subjects its audience to almost as much sadistic torture as 'Eat, Pray, Love' does.

Can't wait to see it. What's with the bare foot to the face?
C.C. on Aug 26, 2010
@CC - I'd say its one for the foot fetish people. By the time it hits DVD it'll probably have a tarantino endorsement on the box.
Nodin on Aug 26, 2010
Foot, gun, latex fetish...I guess Tarantino would dig it. Has he done anything recently?
C.C. on Aug 26, 2010
Hot woman, but I have no idea what I just saw... wow...
Ellsworth on Aug 27, 2010
I have no idea what that was, but I Definitely want to see it.

I was floored the first time I watched that trailer just from the mood and style.
