Zack Snyder Chosen to Direct Nolan's New Superman Reboot!
This must be a dream come true for Zack. A few weeks ago we reported on a very enticing list of impressive names that were supposedly in the running to direct the upcoming Christopher Nolan-produced Superman reboot being tentatively called simply The Man of Steel. Despite including some truly inspired choices like Darren Aronofsky, Matt Reeves and Duncan Jones, Deadline and Heat Vision are now reporting that Zack Snyder (of Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch) has been officially chosen to direct The Man of Steel, with final negotiations currently taking place this week with Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
Not many details are known about the project besides the fact that they need to get it going by 2012 before they lose the rights and that it will have some sort of connection to the Richard Donner Superman series of the past. Heat Vision, interestingly, also hints that the villain might be none other than General Zod. Zack won the gig by meeting with studio execs and producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, almost all of whom are familiar with him considering his last few movies have all been made at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. He also just opened the animated adventure Legend of the Guardians at WB back in late September.
Is Zack Snyder the perfect choice for Superman? That's going to be the question on everyone's mind the rest of this year (and probably next). I'm one of the few who defends Watchmen, especially Zack's Director's Cut, because it is a great adaptation stylized in a perfect Snyder way but with the same, fantastic story from the graphic novel. David S. Goyer is currently working on the screenplay for The Man of Steel from his own idea, and I'm sure Zack will tweak the script once he gets his hands on it. I'm kind of excited to see what he'll do with this superhero. Let's just hope Superman isn't his downfall like it was for Bryan Singer. Thoughts?

I don't know what to make of this, but I did like Watchmen. It's not like Christopher Nolan doesn't have pull in the movie's production.

I wanna be the first to say this! Supes in Slow motion for the win! I know a lot of people don't much care for Snyder, but I for one love his direction! Snyder will bring us a proper Superman film! I actually watched Superman last night...it was something else.
Xerxex on Oct 4, 2010
but I'm wary about Goyer...not a lot of confidence in him.
Xerxex on Oct 4, 2010
Snyder's downfall already happened with Watchmen. Ask almost any everyday movie fan what they thought of it and they'll give you a look of disgust. I don't really feel good about this decision at all. There is a 75% chance now that this movie will look amazing (he does have a an awesome visual eye) but sucking really bad. I don't want to see Superman fighting crime in Slow Motion
Renovatio430 on Oct 4, 2010
I think this is the best case scenario. I just wish they would do a complete reboot instead of continuing the Donner versions.
Farris on Oct 4, 2010
My least favorite director offered the movie.
Moon on Oct 4, 2010
this is gonna rock!
xaudioprox on Oct 4, 2010
@Renovatio430 they probably gave the look of disgust because they saw a movie that was not what the expected and instead of adapting they simply shut down.

Eff the Donner version. Make something new and fresh. Bring on Metallo or Brainiac. Something we haven't seen in a film yet! Oh and....ditch Singer's Superkid.
Jo Momma on Oct 4, 2010
Snyder is such a Neocon, this film will have a lot of killing and war in it!

@ John Vinci what?
Xerxex on Oct 4, 2010
not really happy about Zack Snyder doing Superman reboot ok he can make a epic slow-mo fight in Superman but he over use Slow-mo. plus his movies all feel too dark and Superman can be dark but the way Zack Snyder does his movies they work for a Batman movie. why would Zack Snyder tweak the script his not any better himself. aint the script been down by both Goyer and Jonathan Nolan it should be alright since Jonathan Nolan on board.
tazz on Oct 4, 2010
NOOOOOOO Zach Snyder is one of the WORST directors in hollywood these days. He is probally going to layer the film with a ton of shit that he feels as a director is good for a film when it litterally adds nothing to the film except the fact that it looks "cool" AM MUCH DISAPPOINT!
sjophotography on Oct 4, 2010
Disclaimer... I like superman and i am optimistic about this movie. that being said, here are some personal opinions of mine. ******************************************** Superman is the 3rd rail of comic book movies. the richard donner movie was the first in a very long time. hollywood never took comics seriously. then came batman. superman is just very difficult to translate to the screen. the superman character is hard to believe.. not that a man can fly and etc, but that he puts on some glasses and he's someone else. that he's incorruptable and just too good.. that lois lane can get kidnapped 20 or 30 times a week. but most importantly, that hollywood was never all in. Richard Donner version? a glass of water in the desert. watch it today.. its very hard to watch, almost stupid. Bryan Singer Version ? i Just didnt think they committed to the story.. i never felt that i could immerse myself in the story. Lex Luthor is not funny. He wouldnt surround himself with idiots and weaklings. the smallville lex (from this season) Lex 8??? that was lex luthor (kinda looked like valdemort). I loved Watchmen. I believed it and felt that they went ALL IN with that one. problem is, that it was a reproduction of a book that i knew well so it was the same as the Richard Donner version "a glass of water in the desert" But Man of Steel will be not based on known works, but a spec script. I'm not interested in Ma and Pa kent, or him catching footballs in high school, dating lana or being superboy. I dont want lois to discover him and interview him or any cheesy his and hers flying over metropolis. I want a story that makes me believe that they were ALL IN on it. that they believed it and worked hard on it. where his powers are proportional to physics. if he is invulnerable, then let him be invulnerable and not change his strength with each battle or scene. someone wrote a treatment on superman about being an adult coming to earth as an alien. trying to get help for krypton. that wasnt perfect, but that's what i would love to see. Oh, and finally, superman doesnt battle his good and evil demons every day so let's not have him fight to not kill the bad guy, AND lets also not kill him off.
goliad on Oct 4, 2010
Agree with #11. But still, Znyder is cool at what he does. Even though I only really dug Dawn04 out of his films.

i like snyder for this - i'm tired of seeing superman keeping his hands "clean". i think snyder can make him a badass.

@ Xerxex... What do you have against Goyer's writing? Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Dark City, Blade, etc. I think when he focuses on just writing and stays away from directing or producing he's a really talented guy.

D on Oct 4, 2010
I'm in... Snyder made 300 Epic, Zombies OOOOBER Scary and stayed true to the Watchmen... Goyer wrote TDK & Blade so I have no bones about him being on board. He might actually ground the character a bit and make him not so, so.... so... Invincibly goodie-goodie. Great comic book and HUGE fan of animated JL, but that was kinda it. Outside of Donner's 70's movie (and Williams lights out score), Superman hasn't really translated well to the big screen. I dont know if it's his outfit (red briefs over blue spandex), his 50's America boyscout charm or lack of powerful enemies, but I couldnt stand him on TV after the age of like 7. It was cool for the 70's, but we cant stick to that image 30+ yrs later. Do what you do Zach... Just no blue junk.

So we have the director of The Dark Knight and the director of Watchmen working together to make a Superman film that respects Donners work. My heart just exploded!

VisoTrailers on Oct 4, 2010
@peloquin "The Unborn." He both wrote the directed that. The guy has it, but he loses it. Batman Begins was great, Blade a guilty pleasure, TDK not the best script ever...lacking a lot in some areas, the only good lines came from Ledger, and Dark City gotta see it again be for I comment.

Snyder needs to keep his hands off the script. Nolan needs to visit the set often and ensure Snyder isn't offering a version of Superman, but ideas traditional to the story line. Additionally, Nolan has offered us a Batman that feels authentic with real human emotion. If Snyder wants respect he needs to give us something with real human emotion. Snyder just makes me nervous. However, he isn't incapable. We'll see. Just don't go back to origins. I can't handle that shit again.
ModernAmericanMan on Oct 4, 2010
By the way, I would do Zod, but end the film with Doomsday in order to set up the second film. Superman needs to die at the end of the first, but don't follow that weird genetic rebirth crap. Anyway, I need a drink...
ModernAmericanMan on Oct 4, 2010
I'm a tad reluctant, but having Nolan to back him up I think it will be quite awesome!
Nick Sears on Oct 4, 2010
chris, why is this not your superman franchise but donners? Nolan could finally bring the man of steel the movie he's been deserving. He could make superman great, but no he's continuing with donners story also, CHRIS WAKE ME UP I'M IN ONE OF YOUR NIGHTMARES FROM INCEPTION!!!!! WHY ZACH SNYDER WHY????? YOU COULDN'T HAVE JUST DIRECTED THIS YOURSELF IT MAKE IT BETTER THAN IT IS WITH SNYDER DIRECTING!!!!!!! I don't want the loser who is directing sucker punch ( which i think looks like one of the stupidest movies of all time) I want Nolan making Superman a more deeper, more powerful, more complex, and more darker character than ever before. This could have been great, but the they threw in Zach Snyder, well hopefully james nolan can help it with the writing and chris nolan puts his two cents in most of the project. Also, i don't want 30 minutes of slow-mo fight scenes with no story or at least a crappy one, i want the nolan regular speed scenes with a whole bunch of story and depth behind it

Jon Hamm. Tom Welling. True Blood guy. That's my casting wish list for Superman.
Rory on Oct 4, 2010
Snyder should cast Dwayne Johnson as Clark Kent/Superman, and Ed O'Neil as Perry White. I'd like to see Smith Cho as Lois Lane, and John Cena as Zod.
GeoffJ. on Oct 4, 2010
Just the fact that the only bad thing anyone can say about Snyder is the same old "slo-mo, boo-hoo! it's slower than real life, waaaah!" shows that he isn't that bad. He makes ENTERTAINING(fist pump) movies not deep thought provoking FILMS(nose in the air). Otherwise the 35 or so whiners would have come up with something else to complain about. Watchmen was fuckin rad, I'm excited to see what Nolans+Snyder can do for Superman. and how can anyone not be excited for Sucker Punch?? hot chicks, steampunk, Japanese zeros! It probably won't win an oscar, but it looks sweet.

I'm Glad that its Zack Snyder, I would have also chosen Michael bay. I do wish that it can be a complete Re-boot and not a continuation. also they should bring Brandon Routh back to do the entire trilogy. not just becuase he looks the part but with good coaching on acting he can make the Superman Character great becuase he actually made Superman Returns watchable. not his fault that the script sucked and it was practically a clone of th Donnor films. also if i was Warner Bros i'd look into where the 300+ million dollars went on Superman Returns, compare the effects to Avatar who was in the 350's and you can tell where the money went on Avatar, what did we get for Superman returns a cheesey airplane scene?
RICKY on Oct 4, 2010
This is something that will keep me thoroughly intrigued for many many months. I'm all for Snyder. I do not care about what people think of his style and direction, because if ANYTHING, it's better than a whole lot of directors these days. Solid story, solid casting, solid acting is all I ask. Superman will never be the same. And for the better. Because he's a terrible comicbook hero. Like, the worst.
Cracky on Oct 4, 2010
I am a little concerned. Snyder has done good work, but most of little has been fairly polarizing with audiences. I'll be waiting to see how Sucker Punch pans out. We shall see...
David on Oct 4, 2010
Weep now you lonely few Routh fans, because Snyder has been quoted in Variety as saying Routh is done. Around the time of SR, he even said Routh had been a terrible choice. LOL. Which makes him sane, as this is the opinion of most sane people.
Phobe on Oct 4, 2010
How can Supes possibly exist in the same realm as Christopher Nolan's Batman if its a continuance of Dinners movie? WTF? So we get a lame goofball PWC Luthor and a bumbling Kent? Seriously? I'm eager for Snyder directing, but would prefer a new generation, a new telling of the lore. Not some contrived worship of Donners films.

Outstanding choice! With all that talent around Superman, it's a win, win, win movie. Hell, they can start running railers just off the names involved in the film; Writer: David S. Goyer...The Dark Knight Trilogy, Producer: Christopher Nolan...The Dark Knight, Inception Director: Zack Snyder...300, Watchmen The Man of Steel-2012
Black Dynamite on Oct 5, 2010
i think everyone needs to remember that despite how god like the figure of superman has become in popular culture he is just a comic book character, and the team that has been compiled for this film reflects the fact the studio have finally decided to treat this as a comic book movie. also alot of the hate i hear towards zack comes from people who expected watchmen to be like a superhero movie like spiderman, and then once they discovered it wasnt they just turned off. i reckon this film is going to be really great and that this team of exceptionally talented people will be given alot of freedom with this film, and that will be better then anything else
LP on Oct 5, 2010
His a poor choice,I dont like any of his films and I should because on paper they sound brilliant....eg 300.He got the job because there's going to be a lot of action, greenscreen and Cgi,maybe not a bad thing for this character. I hope they give a reason for the suit like Batman begins.Ironically I'm looking forward to it because I like the character.I wonder if it will be in 3d.

Darkseid or braniac. or why dont they do the doomsday story. have superman die in the end then come back in the sequel. why not have a super hero movie where the hero doesn't necessarily win at the end. then comes back in the sequel. i wanna see some real aerial superhero mega battles that bring buildings crashing down and dragonball z type of explosions. I KNOW!!!! Goku vs Superman, that would be a great movie! jk

Its pretty obvious to me that Jon Hamm will be Superman, hes just worked with Snyder on Sucker Punch and he will be a wonderful Superman. Also, I think Alex will agree with me when I say that Snyder is very careful and very faithful in his adaptations, as we've seen with 300 and Watchmen. If the Superman story/script is as good as these guys are talking about, Snyder is a terrific choice, as he will follow it with great care. These idiots who are criticising him have nothing to worry about.
Kinks! on Oct 5, 2010
Even though I think Superman is being overdone, Nolan does have his say about the project. Nolan is a very respectable director and he's put out some fantastic films in the past, all with great scripts and casting. Snyder on the other hand managed to wow audiences with visually stunning films so far, but many of his projects have been mediocore at best. I know that until I see a full length trailer for this, I'm going to be crossing my fingers, because as a movie buff, I want it to succeed. I'm not a huge fan of Snyder or his slo-mo, so here's to hoping that in the end a great film will come out and wow us all in about two years.

First - I don't think any of the Superman movies were all that bad less III and IV. Second...anything that Nolan does is gold right now so I say give him and whomever he chose to direct a chance. I just don't want to see the same old Krytonite/Lex Luthor plot. I actually want to see a new villain. A new story instead of the same old stuff. Liked Routh, btw even though I know he won't be back. @48 - Michael Bay? Your posting privelages have been revoked.

I for one am excited about this pairing of collaberative minds. I'm a fan of both Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan's work so for them to be partnering up gives me a shred of hope that a decent Superman reboot will be made as I was disappointed in Singer's Superman Returns. I'm no film expert but for me it just lacked in story & conviction. Being a huge fan of The Man of Steel I'd want to be blown away as I've never been before with any of the Superman movies & I feel that they could that for me. I VOTE for a teaser trailer by Comic-Con 2011 .Who's with me? Lol! And I pray that this is not filmed in 3D. Now that we've gotten director/producer out of the way I wonder what route they will be taking for casting Clark Kent and the rumored villain General Zod. Not that it matters but I'm still in the thinking process of who I wish or can see taking on these roles..For Superman I'm thinking Jon Hamm from Mad Men & @58 I'm totally with you on Gerard Butler as ZOD.

I don't understand all the hate for Snyder? He's proven that he can adapt things from book to movie form very well, in both 300 and Watchmen. I don't see why he can't do the same with Superman, Superman's biggest issues aren't with this amazing line-up backing the movie but the lame ass character himself. Here's hoping they can make Supe's interesting again.
BeAr on Oct 5, 2010

Reusing Zod is the laziest thing ever. People already say Superman is boring. Reusing Zod is just going to confirm to them that Superman is boring and that he only has two pathetic villains to fall back on. WB has gone insane. Nobody wants to see a remake of Superman II.

I'm totally not on board for this yet. I do however trust Nolan's decision. Snyder is a visual direct. That's it. His films do lack heart. I thought both "300" & "Watchmen" looked fantastic so I expect "The Man Of Steel" to be the same, but the only saving grace the film will have is in's it's writers (David Goyer & Jonathon Nolan) who I trust after the amazing writing they did on "The Dark Knight" and it's producing team. With Christopher Nolan producing as well I feel more and more at ease with this decison. On the casting side I hope Nolan goes with Jim Caviezel as Superman. He has been linked with Superman since before "Superman Returns" came out. And I also hope he casts either Anne Hathaway or Selma Blair for Lois.

I'm still one of those that liked Singer's version with Brandon Routh (who I think was a perfect choice for Superman\Clark Kent) and I'm still disappointed that WB gave up on it so quickly and not do a sequel. Why? Because it only made them $200 mil and not $500? Yeesh. Still, I'm interested to see what Snyder and Nolan can do.
jjboldt on Oct 8, 2010
I'm going to be hesitent of this movie until I see the credits roll at the end. I like Snyder alot 300 was very well done and despite some issues i had with it i thought watchman was well done as well. my biggest issues with superman movies over the last two decades is that they keep trying to reinvent what donner accomplished in '78. I can't tell you how sick i am of seeing the same old stick with lois and clark we all know the characters you don't have to keep telling us. heres a novel idea why don't you actually have lois know who he is and stop trying to start the story over again. my second compliant is with lex luthor, warner brothers and nolan do realize that their are other villians in the comics other than luthor and zod, luthor needs to play his part but how about braniac or darkseid. they need to reinvent luthor get him closer to Michael Rosenbaums version. cause in the movies hes sucked even gene hackman version sucked. thirdly get rid of the freaking glasses their an insult to the audiances intellegence. since i was 5 and started reading comic books i've always been frusterated with superman not becuase of the character superman but with clark kent so you put on glasses and your a different person i thought he worked with journalist, what self respecting journalist would not get that he is superman. there is plenty of potential here hes a great character and an iconic symbol, but i hope they lean towards crisis of infinate earths version rather than the original, give him a little more depth. and if they cast tarrence stamp as zod again ill cry myself to death.
Jay on Oct 9, 2010
I think it will suck. Not just because of Snyder but I don't want a continuing story from the Donner version, just like I didn't like it when Singer started with "where have you been?". Also hated the old Spock in the new Star Trek. Let the old shit die and create something original and exciting. At some point, Snyder does need to show us Superman's penis, blue or not. Maybe it's a red, white and blue super salami!
Waste of Time on Oct 13, 2010
Hey, look on the bright side. At least they didn't pick McG! Seriously though, With Christopher Nolan acting as executive producer, and having Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer writing the script, I don't think Zack will be given enough freedom to eff this one up too much. My only disappointment is seeing the continuation of the Donner story arc. If that's going to be the case, they might as well give the role back to Brandon Routh. Heck, they should have just let Bryan Singer do a sequel to Superman Returns. They could have shown little Super Bastard as a bratty tween.
kingofgrills on Oct 13, 2010
I can't believe how some people say stuff like, "visual...but no heart" What does that even mean? Whatever Zack directs, he get's to know the subject deeply. Like Dawn of the Dead, could've ended up being some random B-movie. No, it was one of the best zombie movies and a great re-make (sure I'm a bit old school too, I like it if zombies walk) but hey this guy managed to capture yer attention through out the movie. He was a fan of zombies and the master george A romero. Zack Snyder is like us, but only better. Cause he is a visionary. When I first heard it was the same guy who directed DOTD was gonna make 300... I dropped my coke on the floor. Then my food for Watchmen. Zack Snyder is a genius and Americans should be proud of him, he is an amazing film-maker who will probably be dissed for a long time and then you guys might honour him with the shitty "life time achievement award" when he can't even move. Seriously, you people wouldn't know the importance of something until it just isn't there anymore. Zack Snyder for Superman while Chris Nolan is the producer and the other nolan and Goyer as writers? This is possibly one of the greatest team ups in film and comic book film history. Like George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, etc etc. Do you guys think we'll have a new superman theme music? (I am looking forward to that, I don't mind a new superman theme music, it would be of nice addition to the set of Superman/DC Universe themes like Superman the movie, Batman The Animated series, Superman the Animated series, Justice League theme and more) Or the classic Richard Donner/John Williams tune? (of course, we grew up with this tune and the whole world will recognize this tune)
Vish on Nov 2, 2010
The studio doesn't care if the movie is any good. If they did, they wouldn't demand that it be made for $100 million dollars LESS than Superman Returns. I bet the attraction of Snyder (whatever his talent--I can't judge that) is that he uses low budgets. Well...they're also deluding themselves that he'll bring in a young male audience. Watchmen brought in little audience of any kind, except maybe DVD (and nobody buys DVDs anymore, so they're really screwed). Disaster. With Superman, you can't shortcut to a young male audience because you can't have Superman popping people's heads off like it was a video game, which is basically what it would take to get young males excited about Superman. You have to make a really good movie with a real story to have any chance at making big money at all because you need everybody to see it--not just "young males". Watchmen only made $185 million on a $120 million budget. Superman Returns made $391 million on a $270 million budget. Why is Superman Returns the big failure? All the studio cares about is who can make the cheapest movie (while still selling lots of toys...still, did they sell a lot of Watchmen toys? or 300 toys?) Couldn't they at least try to use a real story? The biggest problem with Superman Returns is that it was rushed--just watching it once you can tell the script needed more time to be developed, but the studio probably rushed it to make an artificial release date. Well, nobody is going to listen to fans (or, at least, me.) Good luck, Superman--you'll probably need it.

I got the perfect solution for a Superman movie. Ditch the Project and Make it about Invincible.

Zack is the kind of director that i would trust him with any project that you throw in the palm of his hands. I would love to see this man doing "Gears Of War" The Movie based on the game from Epic Games and Microsoft Studios, he would do a hell of a good choice as a decent director.
