Alexander Payne

The project first came around to Alexander Payne back in 2004, but now it sounds like Nebraska might finally get off the ground with the Sideways director at the helm. The Playlist has learned that Payne will follow his forthcoming film The Descendants with this gestating family drama. The story follows an aging alcoholic father who thinks he’s won a million dollar Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes prize. But when his family tries to stop him from making the trip from Montana to Nebraska to collect his winning, the father's twentysomething son (who doesn't believe the ticket is a winner) is forced to accompany him on the trip after years of separation.

Apparently Nebraska will start shooting in the late summer or early fall before The Descendants gets released. Robert Nelson wrote the initial script, but now Payne is coming back to the project with Cedar Rapids writer Phil Johnston to touch up the script before going into production. It's hard to believe it's been nearly seven years since Sideways hit theaters, and even more surprising that Payne hasn't released a feature film since then. Personally, I haven't seen one of Payne's films that I didn't enjoy, so I can't wait to see The Descendants and the launch of Nebraska. How about you?

I ran into Mr. Payne while having cocktails at an Omaha restaurant and asked about his latest project. He told me he wants to film "Nebraska" in Black and White with as magnificent photography as an homage to his home state that Woody Allen gave to "Manhatten". It will be very interesting to see this film

I haven't seen Mr. Payne in several years but it is interesting to see his films as they have aspects of him in them.  Watching the next film will undoubtedly remind me of some of the old days back on the farm.

They're shooting in Rapid City, SD and my town of New Underwood, with 600 people,30 miles away. Pretty cool to see a film crew in our tiny town.
