Anne Hathaway Responds to Early 'TDKR' Catwoman Photo Criticisms

Anne Hathaway as Catwoman

Selina Kyle speaks! I'm not sure how they pulled it off, but MTV was able to catch up with the lovely Anne Hathaway in the few days since her first look photo as Catwoman/Selina Kyle from The Dark Knight Rises was officially revealed. The TV network asked Ms. Hathaway about the photo, if she had seen it and the endless fanboy debates and criticisms about it. "I was not going to admit it: I asked someone to send me a few reactions [to the photo]," she revealed. "And I happen to know that MTV's reaction was 'meh.'" She probably didn't read our post, but Hathaway did have a little more to say to those who didn't like it below.

Here's all she says after that original reply regarding what we see of her Catwoman costume in the photo:

"What I am happy to say is, if you didn't like the photo, you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do," she promised. "And if you did like the photo, you have excellent taste."

Ha - so there you go! To be honest, I still think it's way too early to be judging a costume, no less an entire movie, based on one quick photo. Plus, the release of this photo seemed a bit timed with the rest of those set photos (which we don't post) of this day of shooting and her/her stunt double in costume. Since I trust in Christopher Nolan more than anything, I'm ignoring all set pics and waiting because I know this will all work and kick ass within the movie, and there's no point to scrutinize it here in photos. Anyway, I'm glad to hear that Hathaway had a bit to say to thwart all the angry fans for now, I just hope they listen to what she says! I'm sure we'll be seeing/hearing plenty more about The Dark Knight Rises, so stay tuned for updates.

I figured it was just a pre-costume, much like Batman had in the first movie during his first conversation with Gordon.  Though her hair still is a bit unpractical in length.  Frankly though that's just nitpicking rather than actual criticism. By god though, there better be cat ears...

Adam Pickart on Aug 9, 2011

I still want to see the cat-ears

Toonfed on Aug 9, 2011

I love when people bitch about the length of her hair.  Change something from the comic, people bitch.  Keep something exactly the same as the comic, people will still bitch.

Tom Anderson on Aug 9, 2011

It has nothing to do with the comic.  The comic has had her with long AND short hair so that point is moot.  I just figured since this movie takes a more realistic view of things that they'd give her a more practical style. Seems like it might be harder to burgle something when your hair is that long is all.  Even tucking it all in would be a chore.  Again, it's just an opinion, not a bitch. But normally you would be correct. Comic geeks tend to be impossible to please since THEY aren't the one making the movie. Sigh...

Adam Pickart on Aug 9, 2011

Who honestly gives a FUCK how long Catwoman's "hair" is?! Truly! I mean Jesus-motherfucking-Christ-----IT'S JUST A FEW PHOTOGRAPHS. Not even actual footage from the movie and fanboys/online junkies are criticizing like they could do any better! All I have to say in conclusion is this: IN NOLAN WE TRUST

Conrad Williams on Aug 9, 2011

i myself critisized what they did to the joker before, until my words backfired on me after seeing the actual movie. that is why i`m leaving the catwoman`s costume design alone. plus, Anne Hathaway is too hot for me to complain whatever she wear (or not wear).

Leo on Aug 9, 2011

It doesn’t seem like she put on weight to play Selina Kyle/Catwoman with an ample cleavage, fuller legs and fuller backside. Perhaps they don’t want her to look like the character exactly as she is in the comic books. In the comic books, Selina has huge boobs with nice, womanly curves.

Jennifer Gardner on Aug 9, 2011

which is realistic because, as anyone knows, the two things a quick and nimble thief needs are double Ds and an apple bottom butt...

Tyler Morgan on Aug 9, 2011

I agree with tyler.  Ladies in the comics can be built too curvy to be athletic.  Same way some of the heros can look like bodybuilders.  I've had no qualms with any of Nolan's grounded character design for his batman movies, so i'll just wait with this one.  😉

I'm withholding judgment til i see it, but i gotta say the only real thing that's odd about that pic at first glance is seeing a cat burglar in broad daylight.    Even then, joker's broad daylight robbery was BRILLIANT which is all the more reason to just wait til the movie comes out and leave 'well-enough' the heck alone.  😉

Uh, re: practicality, Adam- Do you really think a heavy cape like Batman wears is practical for athletic-type movement? See Dollar Bill in Watchmen. Oh that's right...he uses it to fly. I forgot about the much-vaunted realism of the Nolan flicks.

I believe all of the technology Batman uses in these movies is some iteration or exaggeration of actual technology in research and development somewhere, mostly in the military.  By the way, the Tumbler and Bat-Pod were pretty outlandish looking things, but, as everybody knows, they are actually working automobiles.

JL on Aug 9, 2011

If she can lick her lips like I think she's going to, then she'll have my vote as catwoman hehehe

Nick Sears on Aug 9, 2011

I actually quite like those set pics as well, suit looks cool and practical, something Nolan's always tried to portray.  The facts she's stolen the Batpod and seems to be using it in another robbery looks great!

Steven on Aug 9, 2011

i think it's far too early to judge and get all defensive/annoyed about the outfit. then again what did they expect to happen when they released this picture.  in slightly off topic news i've included one of the best quotes from Dark Knight in a blog post in reaction to the shocking scenes going on in London as we speak. would be nice if some of you could have a glance over it.

Alex J Moore on Aug 9, 2011

i DO think the movie will be great - nolan hasn't disappointed with a batman movie yet. however, it will be great in spite of AH being in the film - not because she's in it. i'm not going to be a hypocrite.......she can't act and i've never seen a movie she's been in that i liked. i don't have a problem with the suit - it's the actress. nolans 1st batman was great despite the miserable performance by katie holmes -and since AH has similar talent (or lack thereof) - i expect the movie to be great even though she'll be a weak link in it.

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't get someone to play the female lead who was both good looking, AND talented.  Looks like they traded one for the other.  I disagree on Hathaway, though.  She's really not as bad as everyone is making out.

JL on Aug 9, 2011

I was talking, of course, about the casting of Rachel Dawes. (Katie Holmes: bad actress/pretty hot, Maggie Gyllenhaal: good actress/dog-faced)

JL on Aug 9, 2011

Whine all you want at how untalented/hot both Rachel Dawes have been. Batman Begins, TDK, Inception, and The Prestige all had weak female roles. Don't matter how much air time they got all of the roles were weak and only served to further the main actor's "life lessons".

I can't believe that guy still does interviews for MTV, he's the worst! Jake is awesomeee <3

Davide Coppola on Aug 9, 2011

I'm so dissapointed about this whole thing. I want to see Anne Hathaway WITHOUT any costume at all.

Manuel on Aug 9, 2011

a crap picture!

David on Aug 9, 2011

I agree, the picture isn't all that! Or I don't like Anne Hathaway as Catwoman period!! She looks like a rat in the face, Catwoman is supposed to be exotic looking and very sexy! Why couldn't they have hired someone like the beautiful Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana or even Jessica Biel?

jah p on Aug 9, 2011

I just don't like her. I can't help it. I want to, because I don't want her to ruin this movie for me. I trust in Nolan. I'm sure he wouldn't have cast her if he didn't see in her what he needed for the character. But then again, he did put Katie Holmes in Begins, and she just sucks in general. Gyllenhaal was a much better choice. Don't eff this up Hathaway!!

grimjob on Aug 9, 2011

where the fuk are the ears!!!???

stfugtfo on Aug 9, 2011

The picture is a realistic interpretation of cat woman. Nolan has always wanted to create a realistic character, one  that could possibly exist in our world. She actually looks more like the real catwoman from the original kights end and knights fall series.

Mark Cherko on Aug 9, 2011

Two words for you....Christopher and Nolan...anyone dissing the pics is an idiot...let's wait till we see them in action

Geoffrey Shauger on Aug 10, 2011

I didn't hear a thing she said for obvious reasons. Damn sexy woman that can act to play catwoman and you all are complaining? Stupid film geeks. Besides it's a Nolan film...

Brandon on Aug 10, 2011

Fanboys getting all upset over a single photo, LOL

Anonymous on Aug 10, 2011

Again, nothing against her, but Hathaway is not, in my opinion, Catwoman/Selina Kyle material. I feel Nolan seems to have difficulty with casting women in the Batman series for some odd reason. Once again if I had casted this, I'd have chosen Emily Blunt for the role. Why would someone like Wayne be caught up with anything other than the hottest of the hottest? Hathaway looks like a young teen slash early 20 something and not a woman who can captivate Bruce Wayne. P.s. Eva Green is Talia al Ghul.

Johnny Neat on Aug 10, 2011

I'm not so concerned yet since this is the first pic, but what does worry me is the fact that she doesn't resemble a cat in the slightest. I'm sure the goggles make her have cat-like vision or whatever, but we'll have to see. And at least she doesn't look as bad as Bane, those first pics of him were just God awful.

Peace Love & Gaga on Aug 11, 2011

I think Anne's a HORRIBLE choice for catwoman. She's all stuck up and bitchy in that interview. It's annoying. She's pretty, hot, sure. But not at all seductive like Catwoman should be. She's Miss America, girl-next-door. i tihnk it's an awful choice
